We need to talk about Petty

you're in the right place.

Watched him closely last night. Jogging around with no real urgency giving away defensive mark after mark. That's not what we need right now and while I'll continue to back him am improvement needs to be quite sharpish

Sheesh his kicking for goal was cr#p last night and this year

maybe his injury is an excuse but it’s too hard to get forward entries not to convert

what kind of money is he on?

if he is going his trade value is plummeting

I've had enough of the Petty forward experiment.

He is an outstanding tall defender and should be leading our next generation of tall defenders in the May/Lever succession plan.

He's done some good things and had a couple of good games up forward, but is more likely to have nil impact than good impact when forward. Against Richmond he had more clangers than disposals.

I've still got my fingers crossed for Fullarton but we really need to find a big competitive body with a 'nothing to lose' attitude in the mid-season draft.

Jenkins, for someone who got thrown to the wolves by the very Club he wants him desperately to play for, its a bit rich

I thought the bloke who kicked three goals looked ok

looked better than ok

liked that play with the long handball over the top to fritta for a goal

Since I can't bear to watch any live Melbourne Games - for example, I gave up before 10 minutes of the Grand Final they won after Bulldoggers kicked a goal - I'm watching the replay. It's Quarter Time. Every kick to Petty bar one has been either a grubber of a kick to his opponent. UM, if I was a forward with delivery like that, I'd prefer to play golf - which I'm hopeless at. Then again, my dad told me once, Don't worry about hitting the ball into the scrub - you find a lot of golf balls there.

Petty needs to play down back. He is a liability up forward, and doesn’t offer anything for us.

He needs to be lead to the ball, as he is not proactive in leading or good at reading the play.

He’s a natural defender

He's more your stay at home, contest and mark guy.

If he's not marking them though you aren't left with much

He is in terrible form. Maybe he knows he is going at the end of the season which reflects the way he is playing just like what happened when Jackson left for Freo.

Healthy.

He is coming into the team on no pre-season and obviously important to the FD. He just isn’t going to be dropped without some reason related to his fitness base or ridiculous form of a tal at Casey.

People should just get used to it.

One thing I'm not going to get used is the constant shanking of set shots to the right almost missing everything when last year he kicked through the ball beautifully.

Needs to shave his head. Can't have confidence with a hairline like that.

Only half joking...

For what its worth I've always been a big Petty fan, he'll come good soon enough.

I've listened to Jenkins a few times on SEN. Loves to make controversial comments. I think he's a Kane Cornes wannabe but doesn't possess Cornes understanding of the game. wouldn't pay too much attention to him.

And he clearly has a bone to pick with MFC - never heard him say anything positive since he has been in radio.

Capable, AFL standard, key position players don't get dropped to the VFL when the ly are coming back from injury and are yet to find form unless there are seriously better options firing at VFL level.

There aren't. He'll stay at AFL level until he finds form and fitness.

Has Jenkins ever been right about anything in his entire life? I doubt it.

He's really just a jumper on-er

Interesting observations and I did notice this when watching again.

I would like to see him influence contest a bit more without the ball though.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
