I'm as devoted as they come and I will still be at games next year but the feeling right now is that fronting up week after week from March to September has been a waste. It's a hell of a lot of time to sink into going to the football when life has plenty to offer. Not me , I’m done. Too many things both corrupt at AFl level and us just accepting stuff like brayshaw (especially the victim blaming stuff) and now Pickett and 2 Arcs. That round 22 one sees us third, free hit at the lions and playing gws tonight ….

Ok but how many of those games were we comprehensively beaten and how many were 50/50 games that we happened to be on the wrong end of? And how many did we comprehensively win?

I count 9 wins, 5 losses, 7 50/50 games.

The 5 losses were Lions round 2, Bombers, Port, Freo, Cats. We won or were in every other game, average losing margin of what, 10 points? I think if we go into next year with Petty, JVR, Fritsch, Kozzie, McAdam that's a pretty potent forward line just unfortunate we had so many injuries to our forwards this year. But Petty/JVR/Kozzie will be around for another 8-10 years together, there is reason for optimism despite how disappointed we all are.

We changed things up last night, started the game with intent, were physical, playing quick and through the corridor. But we couldn't put goals on the board, shouldve been 4 goals up early but then TDK gets two in a minute and all our hard work was for nought.

Other than the Grundy/TMac/Schache debacle I don't think we can point the finger at Goodwin, I think he coached exceptionally well throughout the year. Our gameplay needs tinkering, we need a new forwards coach and perhaps a ball movement coach (Caracalla?) but the structure and gameplay holds up. It's just the execution that's lacking.

Totally get what you are saying, but personally I can't accept being so dominant in so many areas and still coming up short. If we were clearly beaten by the better team then I have no problem whatsoever with losing the game, but I firmly believe that at their best the Dees are the best in the comp, above 50% (70%+ would be outstanding, apparently Dees are going at 48.1% in 2023) goal kicking accuracy would have done the job in the last 2 weeks, hence the frustration...

May absolutely decimated Curnow. He out marked him one on one so consistently that in the last quarter Curnow was just trying to bring the ball to ground.

Steven May was extraordinary in that game. He has every right to be filthy. He couldn’t have done more.

I do question how long you can go with the type of coach Goodwin is. I think it's a great culture he's built and the care for the players etc but after 7 or 8 years do the players become too comfortable? I'm not calling for his head, far from it, just wondering aloud whether the message becomes stale.

I think it’s going to be Hardwick style exit in about 2 years time. Just as we close the premiership window of the current list, we’ll make a change.

The first half dozen or so games this year Chandler was outstanding - tough, fairly quick and deadly accurate.  Sadly this did not continue - I guess even though he has been on the list for ?3 years it was his first real season.

If that was the shoulder to shoulder bump against Cripps, no head contact, then its only proves how corrupt the MRO and AFL as a whole is.  OK to jump and collect high a la Maynard, but don't dare bump Mr Cripps.

The team was woeful in front of goal that ultimately cost us but the umpiring was truely one for the ages. I can’t bring myself to watch the ARC review for Nibblers goal, which on the MCG screen was hard to tell whether it was conclusive.

I cannot bring myself to watch any more AFL this year.  Gil clearly has his heart and possibly money on a C v C GF, and it will happen.   (I could I guess bring myself to watch GWS - with Jesse and Bedford - vs Brisbane)

IMO we were only properly beaten three times - Brisbane Round 2, Essendon and Geelong.

Port we were a kick from winning late. Fremantle was 7 points and felt far more even than the other three, but just a game were we didn't do enough for long enough.

This is somewhat like 2022, where we led in every single game by at least 10 points and IIRC we led all bar one or two games by 20+ points.

You can honestly count on one hand the number of games we're been comprehensively beaten since Round 1, 2021. A 3-4 record in finals for all that doesn't sit well.

Watching GWS play strongly here against Port (although they are doing a Melbourne having kicked 2.10 from their last 12 shots to take what should be a 60 point lead and turn it into a 20 point lead) reminds me of a thought I had at some point when I wasn't sleeping last night.

The AFL competition has never been more even. We know this because 14-odd sides were in finals contention until the last month of the season, with plenty of upsets, no utterly dominant H&A side, and plenty of changes to the top 8 make-up all year. 

This is, of course, what we want, with equalisation measures designed to ensure as many of the 18 clubs in any given season can compete.

That means the gap between the top 4 and 5-8 should be as close now as it's ever been.

Doesn't mean it's OK to go 0-2 in finals, but as every year goes by, these semi finals of 4v5 or 3v6 are going to become increasingly more even, because the gap between those sides is going to be increasingly smaller.

Just something to say back to all the flak we're going to cop from people with the whole "double straight sets" stuff.

If "really controlled the game and should've been up by far more at halftime" was a thing, we'd be premiers.

We were good vs Port. Not great, but good. We certainly weren't comprehensively beaten. I don't think that game goes in the same bucket as Brisbane, Essendon or Geelong.
