Red But Mostly Blue 4,632 Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 (edited) So I’ve had the benefit of some sleep and this is what I came up with: Firstly I hope Gus is ok. I can only imagine the emotions/pain he’s going through. We were beaten by a better team on the night. We had our chances to take the game. 4+ out of bounds is seriously not good enough. 1-2 goals from those and we win. But bad kicking is bad footy as we know. We might be missing forwards but the guys who missed those should not be missing like that. Bad night for Jack to have a quiet one. We needed someone to tear the game apart. Kept expecting him to do it but he didn’t. Too many guys in this category. The Pies came out hot. That lead won them the game. … so my question is. If we were burning in the guts from last year’s straight sets exit, why wasn’t it US who came out breathing fire. The Pies looked like they had something to prove. Not us. It looks like we wilted under the pressure until, as always, it was too late and we had nothing left to lose. Now we face the prospect of another straight sets exit. I’m not even confident we’ll beat (the Blues?). Might be my deflated self talking. But we go with no Gus, JVR, and a whole bunch of guys who are now 0-3 in recent finals and showed no fire in the belly when they walked out. Nothing to avenge apparently. The blues will smell blood in the water, and why wouldn’t they? Ugh. Our premiership window 😢 Edited September 7, 2023 by Red But Mostly Blue Typo 2 2 Quote
mrtwister 652 Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 Seemed to me that we had a team that was very wary of Collingwood's ability to intercept in the back 50 and launch into goal opportunities from there. So our solution was to take NO risks in forward entries until we had no choice but to go for it (4th quarter). The deliberately slow play to prevent intercept marks in our forward line just gave Collingwood even more time to park the bus to make it impossible for either team to take a mark. But then they had players at ground level everywhere and just cleared it back out, sometimes resulting in scoring shots because our backs had followed their opponents up the ground. Played right into their hands by trying to avoid playing right into their hands. 4 Quote
Norm Smith's Curse 2,602 Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 I think our sub choice was bizarre - no knock on young Laurie but we've subbed in Jordan so many times and he has he certainty of experience. Watching Grundy and Brown chilling in the crowd while TMAC showed us why he has barely played in 18 months was also frustrating. 4 Quote
Norm Smith's Curse 2,602 Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 The elephant in the room for mine is a ready-made and experienced utility on the list that used to play chf and as a forward for GWS yet we chose a bloke who has played maybe one good game in 2 years: 7 Quote

No forward could save us from that. It's the midfield stupid. This was so obvious to anyone and everyone at the game. Surely in the post match analysis it will be obvious to the coaches and players who are planning for next week’s game. 1 Quote

The guy jumped in the air, then turned his body and bump a defenceless Bradshaw. Will be lucky to only get 3 weeks Agreed and I believe the incident last night is connected to when a defenceless Daicos was taken out by the Hawthorn player (front on heavy contact) After that incident, Collingwood were probably thinking ... is that now legal? And if so, how can we do a similar thing and get away with it? Well they found a way alright Probably dirty that their best player (Daicos) was taken out and looking for their twopence worth the next time they got a chance Back in the day when the sport was ultra-violent, all sorts of ways were enacted to hurt opponents. In effect, the Maynard hit is just more of the same A throwback but nevertheless, also a con Quote

leave it to deever 17,621 Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 I wish Goody would just come out and say the truth for once. We were bloody terrible for half a game and disgusting in our goal kicking. Maynard is a dog. The problem with our learnings is that they never really happen. We have been slow starters and poor shots at goal all season. Just say it mate and then maybe we can go about fixing it. Acknowledging it is the first step. You might even learn something. And point out that it seems we are the new Western bulldogs now. And put your hand up for some very very poor selection which is your fault alone and that you need help in this area. It's not like the Pies are a better team. They beat us because they were more focussed and didn't choke like us. At least for the first half. And as head coach, I must accept I have failed in my efforts to address our poor shots at goal. It has been an issue all year that I haven't remotely fixed. Also I have not recruited well. Instead of getting a couple of fwds I thought I'd choose a ruckman who has never been able to mark and throw him at our problematic fwd line. If I sound angry it's because we should have won last night. Cfc are not a better team. We lost and lost in the manner that has been similar with so many games. It's almost as if yea we got the flag in 21. That will do. I hope Gus is OK. If Maynard gets off then it's open season on smothering the ball and cleaning up opponents at the same time. Simple. 1 1 Quote

Is he doing his job? This has been a problem all year so someone is not doing their job. I'll retract my statement and simply say whoever is responsible isn't doing their job well. Sadly you can't argue with the facts. I wish it were not so but last night was the penultimate eg of this. Not just the behinds or lack of distance but the many out of bounds on the full. Perhaps find someone else to address this because nobody can say it's not an issue. 1 Quote
Norm Smith's Curse 2,602 Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 People who are saying Maynard should get off are forgetting that multiple players have been suspended this and last year for almost identical actions - even when it appears obvious was a consequence of a legitmate smother or move. But I suspect he will get off because the AFL would love a Pies GF 1 Quote

Looking for a loophole that isn't there So whilst Brayshaw is lying on the ground unconscious all Dangerfield & Richo could say was that the Maynard hit was a football act? Another pair sucked in by the outstretched arms If it was a football act how is that we don't see that action on a constant basis ... instead of basically never We see smothers, but never like that It wasn't a smother, despite what Maynard has said. He's trying to stretch a ruling Accidents happen in football but that was no accident. His object was to hit and the arms up in the air is serving to confuse To me, it's best to put your mind into how dirty players go about it So you yourself have just admitted to having while line fever so given that, you should be taking up my angle. Put your mind into Maynard's mind At best it was clumsy but that still means at least a 2 game suspension (at least) By the way, it's not sour grapes on my part. The Pies were the better team on the night and fully deserved to win But Maynard has to go I agree Collingwood came out in the first quarter trying to hurt or take out a Demon or two. The Umpires should have cut it down at the first bounce when Cox put the knees into Gawn. 4 1 Quote
DeeMee 924 Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 Very, very disappointed and stuffs the whole weekend … but it is nice to support a club that is playing finals with realistic chances of winning after decades of specialising in draft expectations. How good if we do go through and beat them in the GF - the ultimate! Does anyone seriously believe if it was May taking out a Daicos instead of Maynard on Brayshaw the media narrative would be the same? Pie also supporters living up to their scum reputation. Our forwards just do not win one on ones and our game plan allows for a totally clogged forward line. With JvR getting suspended TMac will have to stay in which sadly is less than inspiring but who else - we are down to Grundy or Schache. We have manufactured scores during the year but suddenly it seems much harder. Yuk day! 3 Quote
Tolstoys Nudge 1,892 Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 Like I said pre match, if we convert — we win!!! McAdam would’ve been mighty handy LN… now have to do it the hard way beating Lions at Gabba, but easier way is often fraught with danger. However the frustration is real and dominating a team for 3qtrs and losing is a sheethouse feeling & the rhetoric in mass media will be diabolical if we fail next week! 2 Quote

So if a player shirt fronts a player and breaks ribs or say, knees someone in the back with force whilst that player is lying in the ground (e.g. Matthews/Hunter), they can be suspended Tripping is an offence that we rarely see. And tripping can result in a broken leg. A forceful punch to the gut? Suspendable So just about any non football act that can cause injury can be a suspendable offence The Hawthorn player should have been cited but wasn't ... now we have another front on contact incident but this time, the player was knocked unconscious and carried off on a stretcher Dangerfield & Richardson were banging on that Maynard's was a football act but it wasn't Those 2 were just following the footballers 'code' ... best to ignore 1 hour ago, Macca said: JVR went in to spoil the marking contest, not (supposedly) smother a kick as Maynard did The circumstances were vastly different. In terms of deliberate hits, the JVR one was correctly argued that he was making a genuine attempt to play the ball and spoil Where as the Maynard hit was a poorly disguised smother which was in effect, trying to stretch a ruling that most will see as an outright lie In my view he went at Brayshaw to take him out and in the process of doing that he threw his arms up to make it look like a smother It's a con, pure and simple Right..... I personally feel Tomlinson is a viable forward option - he played most of his footy at GWS as a floating fowrad utility up the ground or in the forward 50. Better option than Schache for sure. 2 1 Quote
