I live up here (ex Vic) and they are a disgrace. Hardly a sporting team survives on the GC as seen by both AFL and NRL. The AFL have a lot to answer to on the Suns and this sacking. It is their money and no doubt it was their decision albeit they will not say anything but boy are they playing games behind the scenes. I suspect more players will leave and not many will want to come up here even if Hardwick gets the gig.

Dew’s rebuilt their backline really well from just about scratch. And even then they’re playing Mac before he’s really ready because they don’t have a solid B grade tall to go alongside Collins and Ballard.

As good as Witts, Miller, Rowell, Anderson are their wings and midfield depth is ordinary. It’s taken Ainsworth a long time to find his role on the wing. Hollands and Flanders still finding their way. Some will say that’s poor use of really talented kids but I think they are guys who take time despite their draft position. Overdrafted one way running mids who struggle for spots at half forward and rotation mid minutes isn’t uncommon throughout the comp.

King and Lukosius make the forward line look good but they aren’t actually stars yet, they’re still so young for tall forwards. Dew’s nurtured them along. Rankine’s a huge loss because it’s a big step down to their other small forwards.

Was their game plan incredibly basic - win contests, hoof it long - yes. But did they have the side to work more possession between the arcs without a lot of skill in the half forward, wings and depth mids? Not exactly.

Hardwick will probably get them rolling but I feel like they needed just one more summer for the talent to really mature.

If Dew was fired for anything it should be just how long it took them to clean the books and how they haven’t recruited well enough with experienced players. He took the job knowing it was going to be tough but he’s had so little help from the head of footy/list manager. Wayne Campbell doesn’t even live full time on the Gold Coast, how is that sustainable?

 

Good post. A couple of flankers and quality small forwards and they'll be around the mark. They have three huge Academy picks this year.

That 6-8 W/L record for teams sacking their coaches would include the game after Neeld was sacked but wouldn't include the game after Bailey was sacked (186)

Interesting that the media are latching on to how Dew was hung out to dry for a week but we hung Neeld out to dry for 2 weeks. At least Bailey only had to wait 24 hours

Actually, Neeld was a corpse being fed on by those that come after the vultures

Mind you, the $1.4Million payout for Neeld would cover a few utility bills

6 months severance money only according to the new CBA arrived at during the Covid times

PA a lot stronger than the CA so not only were the AFL coaches tenure's not guaranteed but the FD spend was slashed as well (assistant coaches & line coaches were dispensed with)

A hangover from those times but into line with how coaches tenure's are cut short in overseas sports (notably soccer & the NFL)

So if Dew was on $800k he'll still gets paid until Chtistmas ($400k?) ... and walk into a well paid assistants role for 2024 (remembering that Neeld spent close on 4 years at the Bombers as an assistant coach from late 2014)

I reckon Dew will easily find employment at another club as an assistant if he wants the gig.

You could send peak Clarkson, Hardwick and Roos there. Nothing is going to change.

DD - and you didn’t mention soccer and basketball - as I recall both tried and failed, and bailed. 
Yet the AFL in their infinite wisdom continue the charade.
