I'd say it was a 3 and a half quarter effort. We started vvvvvvery slowly and let them play their game.

Lots of room for improvement, which is what's so exciting!

We were very nervous in the first 15m. Hunter turned the ball over 4 times and Brayshaw coughed it up at least 3

Inferred pressure everywhere. We tidied up well though and dominated the rest of the game.

Today was a major validation of Goody's footy philosophy.

  • Build a list and game style that stands up in September.
  • Get super fit.
  • Back your junkyard dogs to get it done when it's white hot in the last quarter. ANB, Viney, May: you were brilliant when it countered.
  • Hand-to-hand combat, war of attrition, contest-by-contest, wins grannies.
  • Defend, neutralize, mitigate.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but Smith may get a week off for his tackle on Murphy (?).

Not sure it was a dangerous tackle, his arms were free.

That said, its probably 2 weeks. :(

Dunno how the crowd break down was but you could hear the Melbourne chant from the Netherlands 👏

It travelled across the North Sea too.

Kudos to the poster who last week said s/he’d be starting the chant near the end if we were ahead. If it was you today, hats off. Sounded awesome.

Was worried the Melbourne chant at the end was going to come back and bite us though lol

That was a guy in the row right in front of me (cheer squad).

Was about to say "might be a bit early mate"

But before i could blurt it out 100 others had caught on and Genie was out!

Replay was a great watch.

Actually felt like a completely different game the second time around once the stress of all the missed opportunities and final outcome was removed.

Take out the first 15 mins and we absolutely dominated.

Just finished it. Great stuff.

Footy mana.

I wasn't sure where to put this, so I'll put it here.

Gus started the game horribly, including being responsible for Crisp at the stoppage in D50 when Crisp goalled.

Gus then worked himself into the game and had a couple of important clearances.

The final Collingwood goal from a D50 stoppage though, Gus is again responsible for Daicos. And like the Crisp D50 stoppage goal, Gus was left ball-watching or simply too slow.

I worry about Gus, because I'm not sure there's a position for him when we have both wings covered, Salem back in the team and Oliver back in the team.

He's a good reader of the play, but he's not quick and he's not a good user by foot either. He's wonderfully courageous, but I do wonder where he fits when/if we're at full strength.

Is it just me?

Then he is a star! It sounded great and showed that, when we’re all on the same page, our support is as good as anyone’s.

My English team (Sunderland) has a bitter rivalry with Newcastle, the Magpies. We delight in the acronym FTM. It’s why my Dad chose the Demons back in the 60’s because they were, at the time, Collingwood’s natural rival. He hated all things black and white.

I’m celebrating in style over here and the warm pommie beer is tasting like absolute nectar. We owned them today. FTM.

  1. I make sure I listen to King before the game - really critical info for me.
  2. Put on my multi, spotting up everything that is the opposite to what he says.
  3. Collect.

Would have cleaned up backing us at half time then

I suggest we try and have a little bit of a mental break. If you chart our kicking inaccuracy from being the most accurate in the league to Carltonesque, it's very clearly a fatigue thing.

So I know you're being flippant, but this is the last thing they should be doing in a shortened bye.

Possibly for the longer shots from a fair way out but from what i witnessed behind the goals for two quarters, most of the misses came from players that were leaning back on their last step.  Momentum killer with right leg tending to pivot around the left causing player to shank.

Some misses no doubt caused by fatigue but for the most part i felt technique (mainly the leaning back) was a factor on many of our medium to short range shots, where not as much power's required.  At least for those that are right footed.

In Round 20 this year, David King will wheel out his new phrase for our press: the Demon Press of Death. He won't credit @rpfc of course. And in Round 21, he'll say we're [censored]. But don't worry. By Round 22, he'll be saying we're his premiership favourites.

A bigger muppet there isn't, in a sea of AFL press muppets.

The picture is excellent, thank you.

In fairness Joey has been big on us all year.

Also, do you think David King or any other fox pundit actually comes up with their own analysis? I just assume their producers and stats team just feed them lines to read. I think less than half of what comes out of kings mouth is his opinion, with the balance being lines from a teleprompt written by their production team

Joey knows his stuff. Appears he does his own research - or at least, much more than king. And doesn’t flip flop.

I suspect king just a series of PowerPoints slides in his laptop.

But you tend to lean back on your kicks when you're fatigued, so it's interlinked.

The other thing notable was that when reading the AFL ap at half time, it said our 3 goals had all come from 40-50m, while four of Collingwood's five goals had come from 15-30m out. That obviously makes a huge difference with accuracy.

But this is a ball movement thing that I'd suggest is also linked to fatigue. We go wider and we're happier to go wider during the middle part of the year, and then I suspect we'll start to go more central at the back end of the year.

Brayshaw doesn't get enough credit for all the terrific work that he does.  Often handballing off to a player in a better position.  Deft touches on a constant basis. Competes hard and always puts his body on the line.  Excellent spoiler as well

His number of errors are often greatly exaggerated and his good work is played down and often ignored

24 touches at 83%

Petracca went at 50% but there's no thought of throwing him down to the 2nds

Viney went at 68% ... that means that a 3rd of his disposals were not effective

Yet he was B.O.G

So he (Brayshaw) had a great deal more than a couple of important clearances.  That evaluation is utter nonsense

He was fantastic after a dodgy first 15 minutes

But all our players can turn the ball over such is the nature of the sport.  It lends itself to forced errors and unforced errors

At ground level (as opposed to up in the stands) it's very difficult to hit targets at distance.  So players have to take risks delivering into crowded areas when kicking over 30 metres

We need to allow players to make a few mistakes.  You want perfection, you're watching the wrong sport

The game is full of errors.  And excellent disposals.  You get both, that's the sport

Collingwood made a stack of errors today and that was uncharacteristic ... but they all just didn't lose their skill levels overnight!  We pressured them into errors. Again, that's the sport

Take the good with the bad I say

It would be different if we were talking about a player with low possession numbers making errors half the time

That's a whole other argument

Hunter was another who excelled after turning the ball over early.  He is often required to kick long down the line (or slightly inboard) so if that kick is to a contest, it's up to the recipient to fight hard for possession.  Hunter's done his bit

Never gave up and had 28 disposals in the end.  One of our best (along with Brayshaw)

So it's the sum of all the parts

Kicking for goal was poor today but we've been excellent in that area for most of the season

So a bit of simulated goal kicking practice to get back on track and away we go

In terms of half backs: Rich, Tom Stewart, Darcy Moore, N Daicos, Hayden Young, Sicily, Bailey Dale, Jake Lloyd, Jayden Short, Tuohy

Mids: Bont, Jordan Dawson, J Daicos, Z Merrett, Pendles, Sidebottom, JHF

Forwards: Jezza, Hawkins (field kicking), Tex, Gryan, Larkey

Seriously?

All of those players meet your definition of elite kicks?

And you don't rate Salem, bowey, hunter, fritter and mcvee as elite kicks?

Not even one of them?

No, I mean seriously, are you serious?

Why do supporters even care what ex-players or commentators say?

Do we need positive affirmation from these fools and take it personally when we don't get it?

Most supporters on here have far greater knowledge of our team than these buffoons. Analysis from the AFL media is atrocious (Jordan Lewis, Daisy Pearce and Montagna being the possible exceptions).

Ignore it, laugh at it, whatever but don't worry about it.

2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. 2024 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield. There could be more of that in 2025. 2024 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

The luckless Salem suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions early in the season and, after missing a number of games, he was never at his best. He was also inconvenienced by minor niggles later in the season. This was a blow for the club that sorely needed him to fill gaps in the midfield at times as well as to do his best work in defence.
