Soz Tim, but with our regular “Demon Army, Demon Army” chant there’s no clapping. The palms of our hands are red enough as it is, we don’t need extra clapping! 😁😜

    Tom Wills is believed to have been influenced by his time at Rugby School in England and also by observing the indigenous people in his area playing Marngrook, although no evidence exists for the latter.

    I'd recommend the excellent book "Tom Wills (First Wild Man of Australian Sport)" by Greg de Moore for a comprehensive account of his life and times.

    Yeah, realised that after I posted - I've joined in often enough!

    Re clap chants, not enough, though, that I have DA-grade palm callouses!

    Don't get me wrong Australian rules football has and will always be infinitely better for the participation of our indigenous players but not sure there is any tangible evidence for the above claim. If there is I happily stand corrected.

    Tom was the driving force (which I knew), but my understanding was the similarity of many aspects of the game with Marngrook was beyond a coincidence, and had thought it was fact that he had adopted aspects of the game, hence my post. After your entirely reasonable post I did some more research and have to state it's not conclusive either way. I am not into revisionism at all, so while I hope I am right and there is compelling evidence,  I acknowledge your point. My last thought is 'every contact leaves a trace' (is a police saying) with all the coincidences or similarities between Marn grook and other indigenous games, where Willis grew up and Australian Rules, I still think it's fair to talk about influence.

    We wore the Narrm jumper 4 times last year (not sure why) and lost 3 times from memory.

    Personally I'd be happy to never wear it again if that is going to persist.

    We are wearing a different jumper this year.

    Last year we were only called Naarm twice and yes we lost both times. Due for a win ...

    The "Footy Live" app is showing the AFL ladder with most teams having been given indigenous, or perhaps pseudo-indigenous, names. However, I was not aware that all clubs are using these names. Here's the ladder as published in Footy Live. Note that I've added the traditional name in brackets for convenience. Have I missed something regarding these other teams?

    1. Yalla-birr-ang (Collingwood)

    2. Naarm (that spelling is how it appears in the app)

    3. Meeanjin (Brisbane)

    4. Yartapuulti (PA)

    5. Youruk (St Kilda)

    6. Maribyrnong (Western Bulldogs)

    7. Djilang (say it out loud and it's obviously Geelong)

    8. Tarntanya (Adelaide)

    9. Quor-nong (Carlton)

    10. Tullamarine (Essendon - since when was "marine" an indigenous word?)

    11. Karara (Gold Coast, of course)

    12. Walyalup (Freo)

    13. Quo-yung (Richmond, although it sounds a bit like Kooyong so I would have thought it might have been Hawthorn's name)

    14. Warrane (Sydney)

    15. Ngurra (GWS)

    16. Yern-da-ville (North, although sounds a bit French)

    Marine is an anglicised spelling of a 1st nation's word. Maybe marun or muwin but it was not a written language so we are bound to have anomalies 🙂

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

    • CASEY: Essendon

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
