This weekend sees a Wild Card round including all teams except for the Tassie Devils who finished on top for the first time in their history and the northern state academies who took part in a limited number of matches throughout the season.

why is brown not even being spoken of as one of the best performing and most highly credentialed kids coming thru @Whispering_Jack?

general consensus seems to be he'll be a last picked / rookie pick for us, which seems like a bargain for a team of the year AND vic metro b&f winner...

Watch the tape.

Fumbly under pressure and can’t play through contact. Any threat of being tackled and he’s hot potato-ing the ball away.

Stiff as a board, doesn’t bend his knees and looks like his spine is in traction

Incredibly left sided. Not sure he’s turned on to his right once in 40+ touches.

Limited athlete, no penetration in his kicking, no power, not tall, average speed.

Aside from a lovely 15-25m hit up kick there’s not much that’s conducive to afl footy. They’ll have to completely retrain his approach to the contest and that’s very hard with a guy who’s been playing footy all his life in the top juniors.

Work rate, professionalism and ability to find the pill gives him a chance but as a defensive runner (forward or mid) more than anything. He’s coming in to the system as a role player and a top 40 pick for that is unlikely.

Bit harsh on him I reckon DeeSpencer. Sure there were some clangers and poor decisions but, there were equally if not more examples of good reading of the play, clean pickups and some handball work that would make Clarrie Oliver proud. Looks handy to me.

Or alternatively ...

He can win the ball, has a nice turn of pace, has good vision, lightning quick hands, can hit a target like Salem, a willing tackler.  Probably a late 2nd or 3rd rounder.

The Eastern Ranges caused a major upset in their Coates League Preliminary Final yesterday when they beat the highly fancied Tasmania Devils by 40 points.

They will meet reigning premiers Sandringham Dragons in the boys Grand Final next weekend. The Dragons overcame the Geelong Falcons by 34 points but the scores were close right up until midway through the final term.

Grand final date and time confirmed. U18 Boys final will be curtain raiser to the VFL GF at Ikon Park (11:15 start).

Free entry if you arrive before half time (will have to pay for VFL GF ticket if you get there after h/t).

Charlie Edwards and Ryley Sanders again starred for Sandringham. Two to definitely watch on Grand Final day.

Can’t believe AFL will even consider Sanders as a NGA gift to Kangas.  Rules change like the winds in AFL house.

The problem the AFL has with gifting Sanders to North Melbourne as an NGA is that they have to tamper with two of the rules applicable to NGAs. They have to include Sanders into the system which involves development and training with the club over a number of years, not a few weeks as would be the case here. Then they would have to give North the added advantage of the right to match a bid for him inside the top 40 selections. This sort of compromising of the draft system would be seen by many observers as a bridge too far if not outrightly corrupt.

@Pennant St Dee here’s the replay of Eastern’s prelim win over Tasmania:

Prospects of interest are Watson & Windsor at Eastern, For Tasmania McKercher made his comeback from injury, Leake, Schoenmaker & Callinan also have draftable qualities. Leake in particular has gained momentum over the season.

if north get pick 2 for being ordinary, pick 3 for mckay signing a mega-deal elsewhere, sanders as an nga for free AND a mid first round pick for being ordinary...it would be one of the greatest daylight robberies of all time

Not to mention they already received two early second rounders from this draft last year.

Any of our draft watchers seen much of Will Dawson? I only saw him play to games in defence for Vic country and was impressed. Tall, big body can intercept. I’m just wondering if we don’t manage to get O’Sullivan who else we could target as a KPD.
The 15-40 range seems very hard to predict this year. You would have to be confident that JT could find a gem in that range. I’m hoping we hold onto our early second round pick.
