This is killing me!

I really want to know the answer.

???something to do with their first games? Or first season.

??something about Finals?

I don't think it's to do with their numbers.

Perhaps their playing positions??

AAARGH!!!  I can't bear it....but I'll keep thinking!

Another weird one thrown up by this highly unusual and basically uncrackable conundrum ... Neil Balme could qualify as the coach of this side, but only while he was still playing for Richmond!

Maybe not, but if you can work out the solution I'll be pleased to hear a better candidate who qualifies.

I think the eligible Greg Sizer played his whole career on the wing?

Got it!  they all played at least one game for Melbourne

Well, that didn't last long!...

@old55, can we have some clues that aren't just more names, please, please, please? Or better still, how about THE ANSWER!

From your earlier response to me, I take it from @Demonstone's and @Bombay Airconditioning's applause that it's got something to do with flags and possibly numbers, but that it is 'a topic of interest to (you)' I can't tally with those aspects, and that 'fact' is totally wasted on me anyway!

Oh well, perhaps I step away again. Longer this time.

Unless I get a PM from you in the meantime...

I did have some help from @old55 in the form of a clue. I found once I wrote it out I was able to solve it.

You're very close Tim, just put those two together. I've always been interested in jumper numbers.

Yes true and I'd take that career - and you clearly have the solution too @Witches Hat

What's the link in my Demon team listed below?

Clue #1: It's based on a topic of interest to me, evident in my Demonland posting over the years.

B: Neville Jetta, Tony Campbell, Peter Rohde
HB: Steven Febey, Nathan Carroll, Ian Thorogood
C: Graham Molloy, Don Cordner (c), Daniel Bell
HF: Liam Jurrah, Greg Parke, Brent Grgic
F: Luke Williams, Sam Weideman, Darren Cuthbertson
R: Mark Jamar, Jack Furniss, Jay Viney
I: Jack Fitzpatrick, Brian Leahy, Cam Pedersen, Mitch White

Answers via PM please ...

Incredible midfield division - Mark Jamar supported by Don Cordner and Furniss who I'm pretty sure were both ruckmen, with Jay Viney one of the least adroit players in my supporting memory as the crumber.

The team does lack a bit of depth. I expect that will be fixed in time. But there are some very successful AFL clubs that would struggle to field a team at all.

No need for this to wait 'til tomorrow...

Here's a weird thing. I reckon Petracca was in this team before he did his knee playing with a skateboard.

This is the clue that completely throws me, just when I thought I was getting close. How can a player be in the team at one point, and then not.

I dont know the answer to the quiz it self.  But it refers to his original guernsey number.

Would our wonderful theme song (particularly the second verse) provide some appropriate think music?

Surely Andrew Dale is the most prestigious.

You've clearly got it @mo64 and yes Andrew Dale does hold a special place!

Yeah, alright @old55...

Brent Heaver, early on, was just too early for the start of something big, while, ironically, Paul Earley found himself in the thick of it!

And how stiff was Michael Howard?!

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
