In response to @george_on_the_outer mentioning my quizzes in today's training thread, here is an additional one.

You thought I'd run out of ideas to torment you with, didn't you?

On the plus side, this is the penultimate teaser in my arsenal.

As usual, your challenge is to work out how I came up with this team.

You will notice that it is a very strong side indeed, consisting solely of past and present Demons.

In response to pleas for leniency, I would rate this one as reasonably simple.

Answers in a PM if you please!

Congratulations to @Jjrogan for being the first to solve today's mystery.

For everybody else ... Clue #1:  Troy Simmonds and Phil Baker would approve of this team.

It's a talented team that would also love to eat out together, I'm sure.

However, they'd avoid places like Entrecote.

You'd be more likely to find them enjoying some delicious dim sum at a local yum cha.

That now makes a total of FIVE hints!  Not all have been flagged as such, however.

I'm surprised that there have only been two correct replies so far.

This teaser appears to have made people feel even number than usual.

See you all in the morning.  :D

Well done to @tilly18 and @youami and @Jumping Jack Clennett for identifying the answer.

I'll leave it open for a while longer in case others are looking for a way to kill some time on this Public Holiday.

If you read the OP carefully, you'll find a couple of hints seeded therein.  Also note that I didn't claim that these players all have something in common, unlike most of my previous teasers.

Who else can put two and two together and solve the puzzle?

None of them have heard of Stravinsky.

James Frawley maybe late to the dinner. Just sayin....

Now that's a cryptic comment, David!  He wouldn't want to be next to May, perhaps?

We can add @Allus Monk to the list of those who have worked it out.

Below is the final clue.  My cunning plan is for the solution to be revealed later this morning.

Not if you posted it on an old PM, Tim.  I delete those as a matter of course.

PS:  @Dee Zephyr has cracked the code, as I suspect @Timothy Reddan-A'Blew has also done.

I did, cos of that messaging problem I had.

I'll try again, and I, too, suspect. In the end it certainly wasn't rocket science (although, curiously, very fundamental to it!)

Time to put you all out of your misery.

The team has been selected on the basis that the jumper numbers of the first two players on each line add up to the jumper number of the third player.  eg Frawley (8) plus May (1) equals Johnson (9).

I have made numerous allusions to this throughout the thread, with hints such as ADDITIONAL, PLUS, SUMMER, (dim) SUM, NUMBER,  PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER, ADD UP and CALCULATED.

The photo clue is BlackADDER.

Simmonds and Baker were both nicknamed "Snake".  A type of snake is the ADDER.

Well done to all those who were able to FIGURE it out.

I give in... The answer is driving me nuts..  Help me before I go insane.... I reckon the answer is that they all played for Melbourne but I maybe wrong...

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • PREGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
