But we have 34 contracted for next year. 38 max list spots. We have promised Melksham a contract but it could be the RL. So we have 4 possible list spots for the ND.

My chart is based on the current status of club strategy and players which right now gives 3 list spots:  one senior and 2 A rookie.

There is no evidence the club would go to 38 senior spots and I think that just won't happen.  So, it is a hypothetical that I reckon is not worthy of much more discussion.  Perhaps the hypothetical is best in another thread.

are we of the belief that Turner and McVee will be promoted to senior list?  if so, and if we remain committed to takng 2 picks in the draft (which is what has been reported) , then either go to 38 primary (which we have not done for some time), or two need to come out of the primary list.

Do we assume Melk to Rookie and BBB retire?

which will then give us 2 rookie picks to be used in draft or mid season?  Joel Smith news may likely provide extra spot at some point.

D Turner will be promoted this year and McVee next year.  McVee's won't be brought forward to this year unless they rewrite his contract.

I can't see the club going to 38 senior players which as you say we haven't for a number of years.

I'm sure the club will create enough list spots to accommodate the players it wants drafted and keep, in whichever categories work for all concerned.

Updated for Billings trade using a future 3rd round pick tied to Melbourne.  We still have Sydney's F2 and WBD F3.

Nominally we have 1 senior list spot (after the promotion of Turner) which suggests that Melksham will become a rookie.  The other option is to have more senior players next year and fewer A rookies but imv this option is unlikely.

We hold a full suite of picks in 2024 so can deal our F1.

Hi Luc, can you tell me the machinations of moving a player from the primary to the rookie list, is it a straight move by the club or do they have to satisfy the AFL in some way.

afaik it is straight move but I think the play needs to be out of contract.

Having said that the AFL seems very flexible on 'rules'...

#42 won't be 'wasted'. options:

  • used in a pick upgrade
  • traded out for future picks
  • split for a later pick to get Brown and a future pick.

See @Turner response below re the rookie option for Brown

I believe we can only delist uncontracted players so the only candidate is AM-W

Thanks for all your efforts LH and answering the query.

I doubt we would use the first two picks for Brown as they would go to other more credentialed draftees.  I think North have a better go at swapping for number 1 and not sure there is much hope for pick 2 or 3 swap (below that is hardly worth it).  I think Brown would likely go in the ND and not make it through to the rookie.  I hadn't thought about the second option though.  Not enough room for the third option unless we can pick upgrade the first 2.

Fullarton and McAdam getting 3 year contracts? They havent played much footy.

Billings only 2 years?.  It does appear we got those players for light coin. Billings the only one presumably that was salary dumped. Probably arent paying too much for him either.

Ok,  lets see if these guys can make a difference for MFC next season.

The footnotes show the contract term is only assumed at this stage.  When the detail becomes available I will update the table.

Re my third option:  split for a later pick to get Brown and a future pick.  That was before Lamb said we would take two picks to the draft.  Agree there is not enough room for that option unless upgrading 6 and 11.

It all suggests ND42 will be traded out or split at some stage.  We will know more in the next few weeks if Brown nominates mfc which he would only do if we agreed to take him at some stage or the ND/Rookie process.

Edit:  just checked the F/S nomination end date is Oct 31.

If no club nominates Brown, I think AFL rule is we can put him as cat B rookie, that could be wrong but I remember someone mentioning this last year.

LH how does the Kye Turner delisting affect your views on how the ND picks will pan out?

My view is they will now put Melksham to rookie then go for 37 senior and 5 A rookie lists.

Would allow for using first 2 ND picks on new players and  Brown as father/son misses out.

This means no new A list rookies.

If they upgrade with a deal for 6 &11 then do the same except using 43 as the second pick.

Updated for K Turner delisting and on @Dannyz info that AMW has had a contract extension.

I've taken the contract terms for our new recruits from 'footywire' as they are fairly reliable.  If anyone gets more up to date info please advise.

  • Billings and McAdam:  OOC 2025
  • Fullarton:  OOC 2004...I'm a bit surprised that he came on just a one year contract so one to double check...

Now only Melksham uncontracted.

That rule applies to NGA draftees but not F/S.  And we don't have a B rookie list spot as AM-W has been given another year as a B rookie.

If Brown nominates us and he is bid on we will match the bid with a late pick.  If not bid on my guess is he joins us for preseason training and we take him as an A rookie in the SSP draft but I'm not too sure of those rules.

Not sure Turner going changes a lot.  But I agree Melksham will go onto the A rookie list.  Whether we stay with 36 and 6 or go to 37 and 5 will depend on Brown (see post above this one).

Still al lot of options, eh?  Will be interesting to watch.

By the way if the MFC delist Melksham there are then 6 spots on the senior list and if they decrease the rookie list to 5 there can be 7 spots so they can recruit another senior list player.

Hey Luci,

If it helps, here are some links for the contract lengths of our 3 trades :

Billings 2 years -

McAdam 3 years -

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2023/10/17/melbourne-strengthens-forward-line-as-crow-becomes-a-demon/

Fullarton 2 years (I couldn't find any reference after the trade, only this from before the trade) -

We appear to be at 35 Senior (including Disco) - 3 Rookies.  Can't we take 3 ND picks and go to 38-3 and still have a rookie slot?

If we rookie Melksham and go to 34-4 that potentiallly gives us 4 primary list/ND spots to go to 38-4? We probably don't need to do this though.

That is all correct.  As long as we don't exceed 42 in total and stay within the category limits it is fine.

In recent  years we have maxed out the A rookie spots as part of their $ is excluded from the TPP.  Given that this year we seem to have a bit of TPP capacity that could change.

So that probably means we can take two picks and Kynan Brown if we want to and retain Melksham on the Primary list and still have a Rookie slot available.  Or if KB doesn't get drafted we can just list him as a Rookie.

I reckon we will take two in the ND, Brown as a Rookie and leave a spot for a DFA or SSP player.
