    But seriously, learning the craft, getting plenty of game time, gaining confidence at a lower level and continuing to develop physically is what Kyah needs, to give him his best chance at making it in the AFL.

    Noting @poita's report, KFW has a way to go to match Jim's 1986 report card:

    "1986: Stynes is sent to VFA club Prahran to compete at senior level. Coach John Northey describes Stynes as a “loan” to Prahran. Stynes takes some time to adapt, given his rawness, but he soon shows outstanding endurance and great potential as a ruckman. He plays 12 matches for Prahran and finishes runner-up in the best and fairest. Stynes is named Prahran’s best finals player."

    At a guess there would be about four hundred ruckmen better than this guy in Victoria alone, bush leagues, local leagues, retired veterans, pensioners.

    I went down to watch KFW against St Bedes with his family. It might be Premier B but he played on 6’11 Angus Milham and broke even in the ruck. I thought he impacted the match at times in ways that demonstrated his agility and would serve him well at any level in the future.

    It’s true that he is learning positioning and needs strength but ultimately he is a 20 year old cat B. It makes him a fairly unique proposition. He’s gone back to the VAFA and shown that as and underdeveloped prospect learning the game that he’s already influential. Featuring in the best twice and I think he should have got in the best last week too with 2 goals and 20 disposals. 
     

    As for his fitness, he’s wrestling a 6’11 guy in the ruck with the league hit out record and I believe notching 15k. In the third quarter he had a big knee to quad and waved off the trainer and ran through it. Still collecting 10 marks and 20 odd disposals. The footage will show that he had an impact.

    I went down to Brindisi Street reserve to watch SBMT take on De La Salle on Saturday. DLS currently sit fourth in a very even top 8, SBMT remain winless and last. SBMT had their best game of the year and led for the most part, conceding the match winning goal in the last minute or so of play. 

    Kyah had some good moments early in the ruck and around the ground against two much smaller, but stronger opponents, generally when he was able to jump at the footy. Once again he was pushed off the ball far too easily once his leap was taken away, and his second efforts were non existent. 

    His best and worst moment happened mid way through the second quarter when he took an excellent contested mark on the wing. After going back over the mark he inexplicably tried to run round the man on the mark and appeared to hurt his lower leg in the resulting tackle. He was on and off the ground for the remainder of the quarter without impact.

    He played the entire second half taking the centre bounce then heading to the forward goal square. I doubt he had a clean hit out for the entire half and he certainly didn't have a possession that I saw. Even when SBMT was desperately trying to extend their lead in the last few minutes, he didn't leave the goal square to compete at ball ups or fill a gap in the field. It was a completely bizarre situation, but one that further indicated to me that he simply doesn't have the thirst for the contest, notwithstanding the leg issue. 

    I am absolutely convinced that you can either teach a category B rookie the game or develop them physically, you can't do both as we have tried to do with Kyah and Austin Bradtke before him. The likes of Mason Cox and Mark Blicavz at least were physically ready when they were learning the game, so could step into the VFL and compete.

    Serious question, do you see anything that would suggest he can make it as an AFL player, and how long do you give him to get to that point? Because it is a much lower risk to go and get a Liam Reidy from Fremantle or a Ned Moyle from Gold Coast when we're looking for Gawn's replacement in a year or two.

    That's a pretty thoughtful and analytical summary Poita. Sadly I thought Kyah was a bust from day one and he has done nothing to disabuse me of that view .Really a strange drafting .

    You mean the ball was at the other end and they just had 17 on 18? Did he man just sit with him or zone off? Could he run at all?

    This seems like bush league stuff.

    This kid should’ve played a full year of the best under 19’s footy he could find last year then be moved up grades this year.

    He played 8 vfl games last year! 

    Why wasn’t he sent down and brought through the grades at an appropriate level for a Cat B rookie?

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

    • PREVIEW: West Coast

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
