New rule of the week.

It is fine to pile drive a player's head into the ground, then with another player attack him on the ground, by punching or forcing your fists into his face ( see picture in Herald Sun ), and then have the opposition Captain come in and drive his elbow into his face/head, if that player has made public comments about the opposition.

Just pathetic and laughed at by the commentators, calling it a sign that the Pies had come to play.

Bonus new rule is, the  side with the loudest supporters, will be given all the time they need to dispose of the ball when tackled, while other side will be subject to split second opportunity.

    Pretty much. Umps don't like to be booed so whatever will stop that.

    Yeah it was a sling tackle on Langdon. I could see his head bounce off the ground. Then all pile in and pummel his head. There should have been a free + 50 metre penalty. The umpires should have been aware this was likely to happen. Set a pattern for the whole game, umpire to the hype and blood thirsty mob.

    That's not quite the new rule.  It has the proviso that all that is fine only if the player being attacked has made a controversial comment during the preceding week.

    It was also ok to fly for a "unrealistic attempt to mark" which we got pinged for a few times last week.

    If Ed had picked his words better it would have been a free kick. It’s a source of entertainment. I could have told you that was going to happen.

    Keep our mouth shut, don’t be the story, do your job. It’s boring, but it’s what makes it easier for the umpires to do their job. They literally changed the rules because people hate Ginnivan. Don’t be hateable.

    In a marking contest its ok to put your hands in the back of your opponent and forcibly work them under the ball (see Ben Brown) unless your name is Harrison Petty

    Disgraceful umpiring, but what can you expect with 40000 screaming all game at them.

    It has happened in a number of games this week:  Umpires calling incorrect disposal, when the player has had NO prior opportunity and the ball is merely dislodged.

    • 18.6.2 Holding the ball: Prior Opportunity – Where a Player in Possession of the Football has had Prior Opportunity, a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick if that Player does not Correctly Dispose of the football immediately when they are Legally Tackled.
    • 18.6.3 Holding the ball: Incorrect Disposal – Where a Player in Possession of the Football has not had Prior Opportunity, a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick if that Player elects to Incorrectly Dispose of the football when Legally Tackled. For the avoidance of doubt, a Player does not elect to Incorrectly Dispose of the football when:
      • (a) the Player genuinely attempts to Correctly Dispose of the football
      • (b) the Legal Tackle causes the football to be dislodged from the Player’s possession.

    It was certainly the case in our game.

    We got stooged out of 2nd spot because of multiple umpiring errors.

    In the Hibberd and Viney goal frees, the ball was immediately knocked from their grasp, just as they grabbed it.

    McCreary was allowed ages to just keep trying to get rid of the ball, until he dropped it and Sidebottom was swung around 360 twice and both play on.

    Lipinski and Crisp both dropped the ball, after being held by one arm, in our goals square and play on.

    There is 6 decisions all going one way to one club no matter what the circumstances.

    Is it incompetence, or fear of the crowd, just like the Crows deliberate last year, which wasn't paid.

    I know players make mistakes and umpiring is difficult, but seriously, how does it go one way?

    Umpires would be aware of the media narrative and between that and not wanting to be booed, have at least an unconscious bias that impacts their decision making. Sometimes it has no impact on the result, others it is significant. Friday night was an example of the latter.

    Thanks for posting that. To me the rules would appear to clear Hibberd who had no prior opportunity in the first quarter by any stretch of the imagination (18.6.2.). He had barely picked the ball up when it was dislodged by the tackler. And Viney was hard done by after receiving a handball in the last quarter in heavy traffic and immediately trying to get it to his boot only to be tackled and missing his foot 18.6.3 (a) and (b)! That’s 2 gifted goals right there.

    I constantly harass the call in shows with this, never get through on the phone or sms read out. I’m thinking ill have to say something else to try and get through. But I figure nobody wants to hear it.

    I am so pssd that we wouldn’t boo the umps or anything. I was the only person in Q49 screaming my lungs out on Friday night and would cop it from the other 1000 Pies fans sitting around me. That was the most disappointing thing of the entire night (next to loosing of course)

    Where is our voice? Where are our fans? The umps get away with it because we are accepting of it.

    I like to give umpires the benefit of the doubt...difficult game to umpire...but that Langdon incident was so clear cut, prolonged and umsportsman like...well, what do you say.

    And ratbag imbeciles seem to see some amusement.

    I wonder about the incompetence but probably more about the fear with a big crowd.

    I also can't help but wonder if there's some kind of bias to even games up as well. Try and make it a close contest adds to the theatre of it all.

    It's those ones that get paid directly in front of goal that just make me spew

And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
