I know he's not currently in the mix, but if BBB remains injured and Weid doesn't improve I suspect the powers that be will seriously look at Joel Smith as a forward option. If nothing else he has a 'red hot go' and would at least make more of a contest than BBB and Weid. Also, his brain fades would be less damaging on the forward line than the back line.

To use OD's terminology.... that would be corageous

Has rarely played forward . Has scored 1 goal 2 behinds in his career. Back after 16 odd weeks out and didn't star on Saturday.

Our only key forward... I doubt it

I'd love to see Joel Smith in the forward line. He's athletic, makes a contest and can take a good grab. It won't be this week - and it might not be this season - but I think he could be a really handy forward for us, especially with a full pre-season under his belt. If Jackson stays, we likely won't be in a position to draft or trade for a KPF for 2023. And even if he goes, we may have to wait another year to go after a tall draft prospect or RFA's like Curnow or McKay. In the meantime, we could utilise Smith as a forward, particularly as we're so well covered for defensive depth.

He played forward last week at Casey and trained with forwards this week. He won't get another game till Saturday week. So who knows.

Not the same market.  Friday night is two horse race while the Premiership still has many contenders.

I do get that. just thought it was a interesting quirk

28 hours and we will how courageous are selectors are.

Don't want them to be courageous, just to pick the team most likely to win

if it annoys a few fans, it doesn't bother me

I tend to agree.  Lets stick with the Weid for the next couple of weeks and and allow him some consistency and continuity and not take #1 defender.  Chopping and changing in and out of the team and role is not helping his cause.  If after this run he cant impact, he may be playing elsewhere next year.

In - BBB

Out - Melk

No way Melk gets dropped on that game. If Weideman gets a game on his 1 kick assumimg Brown comes in is a disgrace😱

What if Brown doesn't make it? Who then?

Watched his game on Saturday.

He got a few touches in the last third of the game but little of merit IMO. Needs another 2-3 games minimum

Joel is permanently unlucky it seems. He has returned from injury around 4 weeks late to really challenge and the VFL bye is simply cream on top of his unlucky pie

Van Rooyen Mitch Brown, Joel Smith would all be better

Courageous to play JVR as a first year kid against the pies. Smith needs another game at Casey but he won't get that till weekend after next. That leaves MB in my opinion. Has shown very little st senior level this year but it is hard to imagine he would give less than one kick.

What was the year where Joel Smith showed some form as a forward in the pre-season, before getting injured. Maybe 2019? If my memory serves me correctly he kicked 4 in the last pre-season game, looked a million dollars, and it came out after the game that he played a half with an injured hammy

Yeah I reckon that was 2019, total waste.

Yep  Our version of Jeremy Howe, for the life of me I dont see why we cant trial using him as a bash and crash Kamikaze forward who can take a grab!

Weideman will be playing, most suitable bloke for the situation I reckon.

Have a look at the game & you'll be less impressed with his forward craft.

Fence, you're an eternal optimist. I'd be loath to use him in a bash & crash kamikaze role given he can get injured just by crossing the boundary line. Accident waiting to happen I'd have thought.

Please elaborate?

all I recall is him beating his opponent on the lead with speed (but can’t recall who that opponent was) or much else

Courageous is one word. I think we need two talls and while JVR's development is pleasing, I reckon if they were going to play him it would have been last week.

Instead he spent Sunday kicking 5 which looks great on the stat sheet but it was against the last placed team full of sparkies, plumbers & pizza delivery dudes.

I've done this before having rewatched the game & can't be stuffed trying to find my post. Everyone goes "4 goals, 4 goals - he's a forward". Yeah he kicked 4 but from memory he booted a monster from near the centre circle - wasn't playing forward at the time. One was an opportunistic snap from the pocket. The last couple were when he was on one leg in the goal square & they pretty much landed in his lap. I think his direct opponent was queued at the pie stall for the first of that pair. Maybe snuck off for a cheeky dart for the second. Or perhaps Smithy farted. Whatever happened, he was left alone.
So there was nothing about his game that made me think "you beauty - we have a natural forward here". Believe me I was looking as they are hard to come by & I'd have loved to see Smithy jnr replicate his dad's deeds.

Love him to prove me wrong. Poor bugger has had a wretched run with injury & deserves a change in fortune

Look I was at that game and from what I can remember led well took some "STRONG GRABS" and imposed You just cannot play Weeds again. Who is the last bloke who got 1 Possesion play next week? Surely surely not!

What constitutes most suitable in this context ? Having zero impact ?

Joel Smith would still be my choice from those 3 - physically capable of having an impact against an opposition that is battle hardened

JVR if it was a nothing game against weak opposition but we don't have one of those games left this season - his time will come soon enough after a big summer/pre season

Mitch Brown is not an AFL footballer IMO

Looking more and more like the KTF cupboard is bare unfortunately

Hopefully BBB comes good in time for finals

Goodwin will want to look at jsmith. He misses Tmacs versatility.

Do a job forward but if one of the big 3 goes down mid game, shift Smith back and bring on a runner. We will always have a runner as sub.

In most of our losses, we lost the big 3 at key stages n exploited.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
