Records we can be proud of

In fact us and Collingwood (puke) were the only teams to win it more than 3 times in a row, I think

We just joined 3 other premiership teams in the modern AFL era (post 2000) beyond 5-0

Collingwood 6-0 2011
Geelong 8-0 2008
West coast 6-0 2007

Impressive stuff!

Joined?  We would have joined them in doing that last year except, Geelong were premiers in 2007 and Hawthorn in 2008 and Geelong again in 2011, so you might have to explain the above to me a bit more 🤔 .

I’m talking about how the reigning premiers started the next season (after their premiership). Geelong were the reigning premier in 2008, having won in 2007 and won the first 8 games, Collingwood 2011 and West Coast 2007 won the first 6-0 as reigning premiers. Ultimately they didn’t win the back to back flag those years, which is a hurdle we will hopefully jump over. But my point was about the record of how rare it is for reigning Premiers to back up the following year and win all the early games.
Of all the 33 reigning premiers since 1990 only 6 (including us this year) started the season 4-0 (see my earlier post) now we join an even smaller group of 4 (including us) who went 5-0 or more. Win four more in a row and we have had the best start to a season of any reigning premiership team in the modern AFL era. Impressive stuff!!!
As you will note, it doesn’t guarantee a flag, in fact the two teams that won the first 4-0 after their premiership but then lost the fifth game (Hawthorn 2014 and Brisbane 2002) both went back to back, so maybe statistically speaking, we should’ve thrown tonight’s game? Anyway, we’re doing something remarkably special to start this year was my point.

51 games in a row without conceding more than 100 points (last time was round 19 2019). Lever & May have never conceded more than 100 while playing together 🧱

I think this thread about embarrassing records has reached its use by date. Time for something more positive. What records do we now hold that are ones we can be proud of?

Jake Bowey tops the list of players who never played in a loss with 10. The next best, held be a few people is 9.

Is the 12 goals in a row the best ever in a Grand Final?

Has any team ever kicked three goals in less than a minute of game time?

Please add to the list. Let's enjoy our true magnificence!

Ok, cool, thanks, I get it now.

Let's be the first to 5-0 in consecutive seasons that goes back to back! 😊

No idea if this is a record, but at the Demons (MFC and Casey) for Season 2022 we currently have a 93% win rate:

AFL Men's = 5/5

AFL Women's = 11/13 (season completed)

VFL Men's = 4/4

VFL Women's = 8/8

Bloody Adelaide, a clean sweep would’ve been even better. I hope Port pilfers their entire list so they can experience an iota of what Victorian AFLW clubs have. A Victorian club making the grand final with access to 1/8 of the states talent (soon to be 1/10 in a comp where players rarely move interstate) is remarkable compared to Adelaide having 100% of a football state. If the AFL were serious about an even AFLW comp they would’ve brought Port, WC and to a lesser extent Sydney in before expanding all the Vic clubs, but they never do the logical fair thing for AFLW unfortunately. Anyway rant over, remarkable year for the club nonetheless.

When was the last time we had two weeks in a row of not letting the other team score a goal before quarter time?

Probably deserves its own thread but I read online that we hold a pretty amazing record.

Number of games since we conceded 100 points....

  • Melbourne (rd 19, 2019) 51 games

Next

  • Brisbane 10
  • Syd 7
  • Carl 5
  • Freo 4
  • St K 3
  • WCE 3
  •  Ess 3
  • WBDogs 2
  • Geel 2
  • Port 2

I'm assuming all these are the current running totals Jnr.

I'm curious as to what the 'all time record' is say since say 1980? (go back too far in the history books and my suspicion is that not as many games got to 100 points for either team, so the stat would be somewhat void).

Maybe a stats / IT guru out there can work it out.  I've often wounded if an amature out there somewhere has a full offline data base or a script that can pick it's way through the AFL tables website online.

We played 164 consecutive games between 1955 and 1963 without conceding more than a 100 points a game. There were higher streaks before then but all were before 1920 when scoring was significantly lower. I’m not sure but I suspect our current streak could be the longest in the AFL era.

My guess is against GWS in the last quarter in 2013, when we banged on 12 to save the match. We kicked 9 in the second quarter against North in that wild match in Tasmania in 2016, and I think 9 against Gold Coast later that season. Can't recall any other recent 10s.

Thanks.  I looked up Demonwiki for the 2013 season which led me to lists for high scores per quarter.  Equal 6th highest score for the 3rd quarter.

I think we gave away eight 50 metre penalties (that resulted in 4 goals) in a preseason game against Carlton (Umpire dissent rule).  Surely a record that will never be beaten!

Proud off? - perhaps no. Bemused?- definitely yes.

The dissent rule was controversial when it was first introduced and it seems it still is for all clubs now in the season proper. (Intent of rule is fine, the application- disastrous)

This needs to be sorted out now one way or another . Imagine a GF being determined by a controversial umpiring decision on dissent!

GAMEDAY: Rd 21 vs Western Bulldogs

It's Game Day, and the Demons' hopes for making the finals in the 2024 season are hanging by a thread. A loss would be the final blow to a disappointing season, while a win against the in-form Bulldogs would offer a temporary reprieve. LFG!

    DEMONS by The Oracle

After losing their last two games in a row to finals aspirants, the Demons’ season has unravelled in the blink of an eye. They take on the Bulldogs on Friday night at Marvel Stadium in what has become a “do-or-die” contest to remain in contention for September AFL action and the reality is that they have been forced into a situation in which they are already thinking in terms of mathematical possibilities despite the fact that it’s still a close race and even with four rounds left to play.

    SINKING FEELING by Whispering Jack

Melbourne fans were put through the wringer on Saturday and ended the  night with a sinking feeling as their team suffered a two-point loss to the GWS Giants at the MCG in front of their ailing coach and fell to 11th on the AFL ladder, a game and percentage outside of the top eight. With only four rounds left to play, they must now win every game to advance to the finals. The Demons welcomed back skipper Max Gawn and were off to a flyer as they kicked five goals to one to take a quarter-tim

GOT AWAY by KC from Casey

There was a stage deep in the third term of the game at Casey Fields when UTS Giants fans were deep in despair.
