Been watching the Dees for almost 50 years and that was easily one of the best games I've ever seen in regards to relentless defensive pressure. When we've lost to sides like St Kilda recently it's been because we failed to handle this type of defence and now here we are dishing it out..

This is a seismic change in the way the team goes about its job and the type of pressure that can win big games.

Well done Dees.

Yeah it was another great team effort and there’s been a few this year. This is the big difference from any of our good teams over the years, we have no passengers right now.

We have not looked like losing any of these first 4 games, even when cats got close I didn’t think we’d lose.

It's really weird! After watching, listing to the radio and reading reviews I feel like I am watching someone else's team.

Is this really the MFC?

Or will I wake up soon?

Don't worry, old dee. We're going to lose a game at some point. And make no mistake, the usual suspects who have been conspicuously absent on here over the last four weeks are going to resurface. Then, you'll feel like things are back to "normal".

Until then, though, lap it up! We're a genuine football team right now. It's been a while since we've been able to say that.

I don't think 33,000 is that bad for the game, given the weather and the timeslot.

The trend is down with crowds. St Kilda v West Coast drew 16,710. Yes, St Kilda lost badly last week, but that's still terrible. Collingwood didn't crack 30,000 against GWS (the first time ever they've failed to do so at the MCG). Our crowd was only 14 less than what Port Adelaide got vs Richmond on a Friday night.

With those trends in mind, 33,000 isn't so bad. However, in a "normal" year, you'd want to see that figure above 40,000.

Next week is an away game but I believe a replacement game for our members. If we get some better weather you'd hope to see 40,000+ there.

I think one thing may be there seems to be no general admission anymore so far this year and the cheapest tickets at the G are like $65 when i looked it up....thats a pretty big jump in 2 years. Pretty sure it was 30ish 2019. I also think no gate sales on the day would be having an effect, if that is still in place?

Haven’t seen it mentioned in the media but didn’t we just beat last years grand finalist? With ten more scoring shots? By a comfy 25 points? And by clobbering them in every stat that matters? Must have missed it.

Great team win. My MFCSS wondering if we’re going to show up or not is starting to melt. We are lovely to watch.

Special shout out to Jayden Hunt, you’re in career best form. Keep it up mate, love watching you and Langdon streaming forward in excess of the speed limit.

It’s always special beating the cats, there isn’t a team I hate more, hate them, their coach and captain.

a few things I loved today that haven’t been mentioned:

leg speed - long gone is the slow Melbourne team, we’re seriously fast now, loving it

Rivers - the amount of times I saw him busting is [censored] to get back in defence today was outstanding, he has some serious wheels

Kozzie - just love him, but a few times today (him and Fritsch) that he hesitated going for the ball, I cannot wait until he just takes it upon himself and grabs it, love the ball in his hands.

Lever, Langdon, Hunt, Salam I haven’t seen play better games for the Dee’s.

Melksham was quiet, it would be hard playing a rubbish VFL practice match and then Turing up to play the cats, hoping he gets another run next week and contributes like we all want him too (2018 model please)

Jack Viney 24 touches and 12 tackles.. was great last week too..  hes back.

Thought he played a really selfless team game today and kept most of his possessions simple. Great tackle numbers and clearance numbers.

Just needs to use the ball better entering 50.

Spargo another great game. Hunt even better than last week (safer with ball in hand today).

Yep, completely agree. I can't remember Hunt wasting a possession today. I don't think I've ever been able to say that about Jayden. If he keeps playing like that he's a dangerous and dynamic threat to the opposition. He and Langdon seem to link up constantly.

As for my man Charlie, he should have had 3 goals today. Clean that up and he's a ripper. I reckon his ball use going inside 50 is now the best in the team.

Sucks to lose May, probably for a fair while. I think we can still go OK though based on today's performance.

Didn't Robbo say at the end of the match that May will be fine for next week?

Absolutely thrilled by our win. Big raps on Charlie Spargo’s efforts. Great pressure, harassing, tackling and smart ball use. Was a key contributor to our outstanding forward work.

Arrived at the MCG in a howling wind and under a threatening cloudy sky, to be greeted by the sound of Led Zepplin's "Kashmir" booming around the ground. When it was followed by Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer", I took it to be a good omen for us. Let's do this!

As others have said, what a great team effort. Everyone played well. Pressure was intense, desire for the ball fierce.

Viney fought tooth and nail for every possession, May was his usual reliable self until Hawkins took care of him, Lever commanded the backline in his absence, Hunt and Langdon thrilled with their runs down the wings, Max dominated all day and kicked that long bouncing goal to shut down some noisy Geelong fans near us when needed, Kozzie was lurking about in everything and assisted in some special goals, always putting pressure on the opposition. What an exciting player he is, you just know he is about to do something brilliant and you are yelling "Kozzie!" before he has even touched the ball.

Things are going well when Fritta kicks true! Clarrie didn't waste his touches with aimless flick passes. He took his time to look for a team mate. Just wonderful. Petracca, superb as usual. Pity he didn't kick more goals. Spargo's tackling, Salem's marking, Jones, TMac, Angus, ANB, all good contributors. Apologies to whoever I've left out. Overall a classy effort.

So good to see off those arrogant Geelong supporters.

There is nothing like an emphatic win to thaw out the bones after sitting in the cold and wet at the MCG late on a Sunday afternoon.

Happy Eddie Murphy GIF

What about Hibbard coming in?

If Jetts gets done for his tackle, I'd bring in Hibbo. Rivers seems to be having second year blues to me, so maybe Hibbo for Rivers.

Not sure how to tackle this from here on... I’ve invested in us some many times only to be crushed. Is this real ? Who knows, maybe we just embrace it and blow the lid off... Knock the hawks off and head into Anzac eve 5-0 is huge!

2 weeks ago some muppets were calling for fritta to be dropped.

He is an elite player.

If he kicks straight he is. If he misses sodas repeatedly from directly in front he could be a coach killer.

I was not one, I don't believe, calling for him to be dropped though.

Just got back from the game. Great win and particularly so given I had to endure the worst Geelong [censored] I’ve ever come across sitting in front of me mouthing off for the whole game. An absolute stooge.

I’ll have to watch a replay but just a few observations that may not have been mentioned before (I haven’t read through the thread yet)

Tomlinson did a great job in the circumstances holding Hawkins to a couple of goals. That bloke is a brute but Tomlinson held his own. Our defensive structures stayed intact despite the loss of May. He’s a huge loss but we should be able to cope reasonably well in his absence I think

When Spargo tackles someone they stay tackled

Hunt is our most improved player. Defending like I’ve never seen him defend before.

Fritsch can go from the sublime to the ridiculous in the space of a minute

Viney is a bull. Best game for quite a while.

Salem was superb. Never wastes possession and had his direct opponent in his pocket for most of the afternoon. Marked every ball that came near him

We brought real intensity to the show. The type of heat that holds up in September.

Put the game to bed early in the 4th when I was genuinely apprehensive about where the game was heading.

The negative – we don’t put teams away. Conversion must improve because it’ll cost us one day soon. Hopefully the addition of BB will make a big difference here.

Go Dees

Agree with all of this mate, except the Salem comment. I think you'll find Smith took him to the cleaners in the third. Otherwise, Salem was very assured.

A very mature performance.  I loved the way they kept the ball in front of them in contests throughout the day.  A bit of a lapse at the start of the 3rd, but we got back to our game without too much fuss.

4-0.  Thanks!

The way we came out at the start of the 4th and put the game to bed was very impressive wasn't it?

Also a highlight was Kozzie giving him lip after he gave a free to KP. There was something left hanging from half time siren

Champion footballer, butalways gives a hard-done-by display which is rich for a bloke who's professionalised the art of getting soft frees

He lacks the humility of a Dangerfield/Ablett Jnr who show much more respect when beaten

Jeepers, I reckon all three are utter FIGJAMs.

He's such a strong tackler for a small guy. Check his tackle on the much larger Henderson in the 1st quarter, outstanding technique.

GA tickets are $27. Entire top level except MCC was closed (as you no doubt saw if watching) and there were heaps of gaps down the bottom, so should have been tickets available today. Online though, not at gate

Maybe you were looking in wrong spot?

Four and Oh, soak it up!!!

My standout points for the game:

  • Jake Lever is a legend. BOG by far, stood up when May went down and his leadership was absolutely exceptional. Without him there, likely we'd have crumbled and lost.
  • The improvement of lower tier players like Hunt and Neal-Bullen is having a huge impact on how well we are playing. Credit to those guys to finding some great form and credit to Williams (I expect) for his impact in that regard.
  • Great that the umpires are finally penalising the throwing in congestion, good to see.
  • If we hadn't dropped all those marks and kicked for goal terribly we'd have won by about 50 goals, no doubt.

Worked it out quickly.

Good coaching, saw him push his opponent away before taking off.

Would have been other skills as well.

Great game, and tagged. O'Connor did a good tag last game, so even more impressive improvement.

Nope. Melksham has to go I reckon. He was terrible.

Live for those threads after a win.

Call it K-rock of [censored] or something like that...

Half our family is Geelong, so I hear a bit of the way they talk. Mostly anti-Chris Scott stuff, but this week's pearler was we should beat them because they're so undermanned.

As for the Geelong supporters around us today, they were smashing a lot of their players and Scott.

I guess not being able to buy tickets at the gate would still have an effect on the crowd

Was Jordan on the bench a lot?

He had 56% TOG. So much that he does is solid though. Have loved his start to the year. Only 4 touches today though, along with 5 tackles, may be given a rest next week.

Sparrow only 39% TOG and had 5 tackles too, along with 9 touches. Maybe it's Sparrow for JJ?

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit.
