I dont know who is doing them, but i'll have a crack

6 - Moloney ..... looked like the only player who wanted to kick the ball

5 - Holland ...... was our best backman for the night, and tried his best to rebound

4 - Neitz .......... on a night where our forwards got shocking delivery, he played well

3 - Robertson .... along with Neitz, the only person who looked like kicking a goal

2 - Ward ........... broke the lines a few times, wasn't our worst

1 - White ........... broke even in the rucks, and made a nice pass to Green

To those who gave a vote to Daniel Ward is laughable. Pls look at the replay and tell me how many times he actually hit a target coming out of the backline. If Melbourne are going to employ Ward is the link man out of defence like St Kilda do with Goddard, Kangas with Sinclair, Dogs with McMahon etc, we are in a heap of trouble.

Look at the options Ward had to kick to.

He was one of the few players who was actually trying to create some drive forward with his pace and long kicking.

Agreed. He was one of a few who had the courage to run and take the game on. The rest played dumb, circular, non-descript football.

Because there wasn't anyone to kick it to in the forward half of the ground. ND forgot about the need for a forward line.

Ward looked like the villian because he was taking risks and actually trying to create something.

6 - Moloney - Our best imo. Great to have him back. Missed his long kicking. He didnt blaze away with them either like he has been criticised of doing, but when he did they were spot on. Had some great long passes to neitz. There were 2 occasions where neitz marked his perfectly placed long kicks one handed and diving after a strong lead. Was relieving to see he still has the talent, and passion. Wish some others would follow his lead. At one stage he got shoved needlessly into the fence, wasnt happy, turned around and let the Sainter know it, and wound up taking on 3 of them by himself in a wrestling match. Not one team mate came to his aid :( Wish some others had his passion and fire! Will have a good year, and may be top 5 in our B&F if he stays fit and doesnt suffer injuries.

5 - Holland - Our only backmen not humiliated. Even though he was allowed to run around and be the loose man, he did a far better job than i thought imaginable for someone so slow who isnt the most reliable kick...

4 - Neitz - Got limited opportunities, and with the exception of one set shot he missed, did very well.

3 - Robertson - like neitz, limited opportunity, and did alright considering. Great goal before half time!

2 - Jones - Great first quarter, and tried all day. When Brock went down, Jones' stats dried up, as he didnt have ths upport and started getting crunched from all directions :( Love this kids heart, and hope he plays all year.

1 - White - Feel sorry for him. What a lousy match to remember as your 200th for the Dees :P Congrats on kicking his 100th goal in his 200th match! Did a few great things around the ground. Had a few good passes, and won a great contest near the wing in the 2nd half. He ran his guts out at the ball headed for the boundary line, was running against an obviously quicker opponent, and made the distance, threw his body at the ball, sheperding it from the opponent and taking the hit, then gathered and off he went. Fantastic to see a big man do this. I found it really inspirational, and felt sorry not many of his team mates had the same ticker on the night.

Holland is worthy of the 6 though

Have a look at his second quarter. I like Wardy but he killed us, missing targets & getting caught out on the rebound. Momentum-snuffing stuff that. I'd have hoped one of the younger brigade had consigned Wardy to a future at Sandy by now. His run is great & he can get plenty of it but couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo. Although he did give us a false dawn in the first quarter with a nice pass resulting in a goal. Quickly rediscovered his level though.

On the votes - I'd probably echo Lord Travis. Tough to find 6 on a disappointing night.

BIG RED SIGNING IN:

Am I the only one to notice that Moloney refuses to chase........He is the most defensively inept player in our side (and he has alot of competition).

No, I must say I didn't notice that on Friday night. I thought the idea of refusing to chase was part of the game plan.

May I volunteer to do the votes for Haw V Melb.

What are the current odds on Holland winning this Demonland player of the year

Never thought I'd see him high on the leaderboard. Perhaps Mr Bruce, Mr Johnstone and Mr Green should take notice of the current standings!!

that's exactly right mate, if I had hypothetically, somehow entirely missed out on what happened on Friday, but saw that leaderboard in isolation (even though i wouldnt ENTIREly agree with it) and the absence of Bruce, McLean, Johnstone, Pickett, Whelan, Rivers, Davey, Green and McDonald with just 1, I would bet my life on the fact that we lost the game.

Obviously, no blame can be put on Chook, Rivers, Byron and Whelan - their absence was very hard felt - but for the rest of them it's simply not acceptable that so many of our most important players all be down on the one night. No side will ever win a game with that type of failure from its upper tier.

100% right. Moloney does not have a huge engine, and moreso has a terrible defensive work ethic. The coaches know it about him, but he gets a game for the offensive attributes.

wow, thats a pretty big spray against beamer. Perhaps i dont pay enough attention to the guys 2nd efforts. Will certainly have an eye on him this week.

6- Moloney definitely one of our best Friday night.

5- Holland the only back man i saw actually winning contests

4- Jones

3-Robertson

2- Neitz

1-ward (only because he was trying to run the ball out of our back line instead of hanballing to a stationary player like everyone else was!)

No. It's been highlighted by commentators as early as 2005.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
