Team Of The Century

Featured Replies

Seeing that few of us are going to be around to see the 2021 MFC Team of the Century named and that this month is usually the silly season of the AFL, I am calling for nominations. The century is a fifth old so theoretically that means four or five players. Unless of course you think that we are going to be so good in the future that none of our current players will get in.

By the way, it's snowing here!

it would definitely be limited you'd think

the likes of jones, neitz, schwarz, yze, and white, would be likely candidates based upon their current body of work from 2000 to now

current players under consideration would be gawn, oliver, and possibly petracca depending on what sort of impact they have as players over the next half a decade or more

you'd also hope that young players such as jackson, pickett, rivers, and who knows who else would be seriously considered depending on their next decade of performance

for the most part, we haven't had many 'star' performers this century; we've been fairly woeful on field

Only those who have finished their careers and whose whole body of work can be assessed should be considered.

Current players will have their chance next time.

Neitz, Schwarz are definitely in. Toss up for any others who, unfortunately, would have to displace premiership players from our successful eras.

Jetta              May           Frawley

White,  , McDonald, Vince,Jones

that would have to be one of the most talented half forward lines you would ever see, and it's also probably my 3 favourite all time Demon players as well.

I was going to say, Robertson is a bit unlucky to miss out on a forward spot but you can also see why.

I had him in the original 22...Then I remembered Woewodin...

BIt short on key defenders, when you examine it closely. Vince was a better ball user than Moloney, far more 'finessed.'

B: WHELAN, FRAWLEY, JETTA

HB: N.BROWN, J.RIVERS, S.FEBEY

C: YZE, JONES, WOEWODIN

HF: BRUCE, SCHWARZ, ROBERTSON

F: FARMER, NEITZ, DAVEY

FOLL: GAWN, JOHNSTONE, J.MCDONALD

IC:  T.MCDONALD, WHITE, MOLONEY, GREEN

i mean is frawley not a key defender, and you've seen how AA teams are picked teams of the centuries are picked similarly, just get the good players in and stick to a traditional ish side, no need for second talls and 4th rucks they don't actually have to play anyone

I know Who  most Teams would like to face At the opening bounce and it's Bruce and Johnstone rather than Clarry and Trac.

Ironically Trav is a Centreman  really and Bruce mainly a half forward So changing  them and 10% toughness would be the result.and players in their best possie also.

In addition Vince might provide versatility but our Bernie is not the Adelaide version do Robbie as our third highest goal kicker earns a bench spot on  decade of devotion and thrills he gave us! ( Still he hardly ever picked up a ball off the ground once he flew and missed the mark).

Did  Bizzell play long enough  ? I mean Ward Walsh Even Hibbo have played enough In comparison.

Ingerson surely over May who in 2 years will be a cert for  FB.

I would change Ingerson for Rivers, Steve Febey for Bizzel. The rest would be the same, maybe Johnstone in the centre, Oliver on the ball,

In determining whether any current players will make the 2000 team of the century, I'm of the view that the selectors will be our great grandchildren and probably not up to date with current talent. They'd probably take one look at the 2010-2020 results and look no further.

In evaluating the 1900 team of the century, only two players made the team from pre 1930's (Bert Chadwick and Ivor Warne-Smith, who won two Brownlows). 6 players from the three-peat team 1939-1941 and 11 from the most dominant team of all time in the 50's. More recently than 1965, the selectors picked Hardeman, Flower, Lyon, Stynes and Viney.

I'd imagine the 2000 team of the century will have much the same profile, unless we start winning a bunch of flags soon (hoping).

  • CASEY: Richmond

The winds finally returned to Casey Fields for the Demons’ third home game of the VFL season, and its impact was immediate. After two opening rounds played in uncharacteristically fine conditions, the Anzac Day clash brought back the familiar gusty conditions that have been a feature of the region at this time of the year.
Forced to kick into the breeze first, the slow-starting Demons faced a tricky opening against an enthusiastic young Tigers outfit. Casey responded by turning the contest into a scramble, pressuring Richmond into errors and missed targets. The tactic proved crucial, keeping the game tight for three and a half quarters before the Demons pulled away with the autumn wind at their backs.

  • REPORT: Richmond

It seemed as if the whole purpose of the Anzac Eve clash at the MCG between the Demons and the Tigers was building toward that single, unforgettable moment when Kozzie Pickett soared above Campbell Gray and all but fittingly etched his name onto the face of the 2026 Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal.
