Looks a good mover with a penetrating left foot kick, but certainly from last year would have to do a lot of work on his tackling and strength at the contest. 

He's as young as any player in this draft as well so might take a bit more time to build up. He looks like a half back flanker to me, at least in the early years. 

Nothing too inspiring from the footage, but looks closer to an outside mid than an inside mid which I take away as a positive on a needs basis

✅ Jack Carroll. I’ve been pushing his name for the Dees for a while now.  I always have seen him as an outside mid. Skilled and evasive.  Left footers have that style.  Half back or wing. Suited to our needs and wouldn’t have to match it with inside mids.  We have plenty of those.  A touch of a young Simon Black imv.  He can kick 50 metres easily and likes to kick but also creative with handball. East Freo boy like Jacko and Riv.

Max Holmes.  He’d be a bigger bolter than ever given he’s hardly played any footy.  A very gifted athlete, following in his mum Lee’s footsteps.  He’s a nice kid who went to school with my daughter. Little Max has grown in the last few years to over 6foot.  But he’s skinnier than a Grgic and a Morton and we’d have to tell Vdberg not to kill him in the tackle.  He’s a late draft smoky or rookie pick likely imv.  That’s the punt. Again it’s a debate about turning an athlete into a footballer. I wouldn’t use a late first round pick around 21-22.  He’s probably more around our pick 50 interest still as a punt at that pick. Behind Carroll,  I’m still thinking and hoping for Cook ?or Laurie, and then potentially Poulter, Ford, Winder etc at our “28”.

He had a strong season at WAFL colts level as an on baller with a good amount of contested ball winning. Versatility is probably one of his best strengths. I'd like to see a bit more line breaking run or bustling physical play, there might be more of that in his games this year. We need at least one classy kicker on ball, so even if he added to our glut of mids at least he'd be the right kind of addition. Then it would be up to the coaches to work out the subtraction!

Class, composure, skills sounds great - but the fact that he's actually winning a lot of his own ball and isn't known to be especially quick... does he really fit our need?  I know to label players inside or outside is too simplistic but if you say he reminds you of Simon Black, wasn't he the guy that got the ball out at the bottom of the packs (admittedly had great finishing skills too)? 

Not being critical of your opinion but you've seen him a bit so can probably explain for the rest of us.  The last thing we want is someone who we're hoping will play halfback / wing who ends up being an inside mid like Jordan (as he'll end up being behind about 8 other players).  I'm probably also fearful of what happened with Trengove - was meant to be a class player that could do it all (inside / outside) but seemed to be a bit slow for AFL to show it in the end (obviously injuries and our development at the time played a huge part).

Some of these phantom drafts are so biased they have half the teams taking smokies just so the good players end up slipping through to the teams they support as if it would somehow trick the recruiters into believing that’s the right option.

Understand. I see Carroll developing into a classic wing player. He ran a 3.0sec 20 metre sprint. He’s not a Trengove style player at all. Classy with the footy. Has skills by foot and hand. It’s his skill, vision and decision making that I see as a big win for us, to link with our midfield bulls.

Holmes has been playing firsts for Melbourne Grammar since 2018, assuming your daughter schooled with him in primary school due to that institution's gender requirements,  and has played good APS footy.  Been judged BOG in a game at each year level and as a year 10 at first XVIII level, which is a good effort  He played rarely for the Dragons but when he did they used him as a half-forward, marking flanker hybrid type. He has a  good footy brain and clean hands on the lead and at ground level, a good runner and a good leap with nice timing.  Kicking is probably a query but he isn't just an athlete, he has some football ability, just is underexposed to non-APS watchers, which to be honest I am now.  But he showed promise in his brief TAC Cup forays as a forward, but you can see the versatility he could bring to the table and has probably played other positions for Melbourne Grammar.  All the same, I'm surprised by the link, but with imagination you can certainly see him having had a very good TAC Cup year this year had he had the chance and probably a nice piece of clay for an AFL team to work with.

Yes primary school in Malvern East. He was a star athlete even back as a young boy. Well trained by Lee to run and he had motor and definitely highly motivated.  
He’d present like a Blicavs type experiment to turn the athlete into a footballer.  It’s a shame he didn’t get the U18s league this year to develop more.  I think for Holmes , like Fraser Rosman, it will be interesting to see if any clubs takes up the challenge.

I too would be very surprised if we took Holmes, especially when Poulter and O'Driscoll are on the board who seem much better options in the same position as an outside mid. Again like you've been saying would be thrilled with Carroll who suits our needs to a tee on a wing or at half back.

Holmes has been playing footy for years, played and starred in junior footy all the way through from Auskick and then school footy, just only played against Tassie under 18s as a forward as his only match in the draft 'system'.  His story/path is nothing like Blicavs and it's distorting the truth to suggest otherwise.

The Blicavs comment was bizarre.  I think someone reads too much phantom bigfooty drafts.

I remember Holmes back in the the school boys day back in the under 15 level. He was small but he was still a well coordinated footballer who had strong athletic traits. I'm amazed how much he's grown.

His style is similar to our very own Murray Bushranger lad in Dom Bedendo who is also hoping to get pick up on Wednesday.

Holmes' story seems very similar to Jayden Hunt. Small kid with other sporting interests. Always played footy but not having a lot of exposure to the elite junior pathways.

I know Hunt hasn't become the player we hoped he would but all things considered he was still a decent pick up. 

It will take a brave call to say he has the skills and smarts with such little exposure against quality opposition but if they've seen enough I can understand the appeal.

yep, certainly Holmes played similar role for Dragons as Bedendo and they both similar sizes and they both wear 64 as well from memory.   I think Bedendo a better contested mark but I think Holmes probably better ground level player and decision maker and probably a bit more versatile.  It's a cruel year for a lot of these kids - shrinking list sizes, a bastardised rookie list and no top age year is going to cost probably 20 kids, though of course many will get another chance next year.

National level athletes who decide to focus their talent on footy.  That’s the comparison.  
As I stated, tough year for recruiters to take a punt on such kids. This year with reduced lists, recruiters might go with players who have come through underage rep teams such as the 2018 under 16s and through u17 futures squad from 2019.

He was a high end talent footballer right from a young age as @goodoil pointed out....

Its not like he was an athlete first who then turned to football in the last few years.. The difference with Holmes is that he so happened to be a very talented athlete in athletics, and it seems that this was a path he could potentially go down professionally if he decided that instead of footy. Bit like kids now days choosing between basketball and footy. He's always had footy in the background.

There is no comparison really.

This is my final phantom draft for the year including a few live trades. I have us at the moment trading pick 19 + 28 for Collingwood's pick 14 because if Macrae keeps sliding I can't see us not trading up to get him knowing the Tigers will take him. The trade also makes sense for Collingwood because they have a big interest in Poulter who they can grab at 19 and they are looking to take 5-6 picks in the draft due to their list exodus in the trade period, and we solve our problem of only wanting to use 3 picks. Macrae and Carroll is a terrific result, both are extremely versatile, extremely good ball users and could fit straight in at a wing/half back/half forward round 1 next year, if your looking for any extended write ups of them they shouldn't be too hard to find in this thread. Winder at our third round pick is a great result too, has enormous amount of skill and talent and has the potential to be a real hidden gem, I liken him to Sydney Stack.

Love your work - I haven't seen any of these boys live (so what do I know) but the idea of getting Macrae, Carroll and Winder from what I have read and seen would be a steal!  Definitely addressing our biggest needs.

Blows my mind that a guy like Cal Twomey who people rate suggests we would take a speculative pick with Holmes at our second selection. He may turn out to be a good player, but pick the best players available and pick for needs before speculative picks.

There is no comparison really. 

He wasn’t in any Vic underage rep teams and cannot remember him in the under 16s squad or even in the Sandringham Dragons program.  Was never a choice between elite footy or elite athletics. He got a look in 2019 with the Dragons following his school footy year and his pace and endurance showed real potential.   Only the one game in under 18s. Tough break this year with no Vic under18s footy.

Macrae and Carroll is a terrific result, both are extremely versatile, extremely good ball users and could fit straight in at a wing/half back/half forward round 1 next year, if your looking for any extended write ups of them they shouldn't be too hard to find in this thread. Winder at our third round pick is a great result too, has enormous amount of skill and talent and has the potential to be a real hidden gem, I liken him to Sydney Stack.

He's won South Metro  junior league B+Fs, multiple club junior B+Fs and been in SMJFL rep sides all the way with Bowey, Perkins and co.  He's been very much a highly-rated junior footballer at local level for years.  Just because he didn't play in the Team Brown v Dal Santo match doesn't mean he can't play or hasn't played much football.

Every year the draft is speculative but this year way more than ever. If you look at it the top 20 or so picks are mostly WA and SA kids who showed their stuff, academy players then the elite Vics who did enough last year.

There’s a pretty steep drop off somewhere in the 20’s. Almost any player picked in that range won’t have played national champs, WAFL on Sanfl seniors, Nab league finals and so on. The so called safe choices might’ve played half a dozen state league colts games, let’s not pretend they are significantly safer bets in any way.
