Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Most draft boards have us taking Carroll - Who's a good friend of Rivers. Always welcome additions that are left foot tidy kicks and go home factor somewhat less with a good friend at the club (See Brisbane Lions recent model).

Yes firstly he’s got all the AFL qualities. Then the East Freo connection to LJ and Riv. That’s the plan. Wait and see now.

I've seen rumoured the Crows and Giants to do a swap of their first rounders where Adelaide would send 9 and 22 to the giants for 13 and 15. This deal would be good for us because it means Laurie probably gets through to our pick since the Giants are the big threat of taking him at 15, obviously with that pick out of the picture hopefully Laurie would get through.

Yes agree that would be a better scenario for us to get Laurie. Another footballer type who uses the footy. That’s what we are after. Youngsters who can execute with the footy and not create turnovers that kill us.

I reckon the go home factor is overstated DZ.

How many players drafted from WA actually end up going home? There’s only the 2 teams over there. And Freo isn’t exactly a destination club. When Kelly had the option of Freo in 2019 he turned them down so the home sickness can’t have been that bad. Hogan of course went back but has left again. McCarthy went back and that was a disaster. Bennell didn’t work out. Rory Lobb is a good pick-up for Freo but GWS didn’t try too hard to keep him.

So you really only need to worry about West Coast and they still have to trade if they want a player.

I don’t think go home factor should not be a consideration when selecting a player. If the team is successful the WA players will stay put.

It's a genuine myth. 'Homesickness' sounds better than 'I'm leaving because I can' so it's dished up as an excuse.

Very few players leave good clubs, with the exception of GWS. And very few leave after only 2 years. So it's rare that you lose a guy before he's even had a chance to perform. If you're 50/50 split between local and interstate then go local, but it wouldn't be the number 1 tie breaker to me.

Yes.  That would be a great result especially to land Jack Carroll and Brayden Cook.

I think we are in good hands. JT has done very well over the years to build the list. @adonski the great part was as you quoted - “looking for outside run, creative players, good decision makers, good ball users”.

Another player to watch will be Finlay Macrae, with the potential for the younger brother of Western Bulldogs star Jack to slide through to the later stages of the first round as Richmond and Melbourne track him closely with their top-20 picks.

Remember when Burgo used to give us a phantom draft with a prediction for every selection through to the last?

That's two phantoms that have us taking Carroll and Cook.

Also what's happened to Seamus Mitchell? Doesn't seem to be factored into any phantoms drafts that I can see and doesn't rate a mention in Cal's whispers for later selections among any clubs. Slipped back into late/rookie territory?

The Age -

22. Melbourne

Max Holmes (wingman)
Sandringham Dragons/East Malvern/Melbourne Grammar, 189cm, 74kg

The Dees have been keen for more run, targeting Isaac Smith as a free agent, and appear increasingly likely to pounce on Holmes, the son of dual Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lee Naylor. Melbourne have also been linked to possible bids on academy Errol Gulden (Sydney) and Blake Coleman (Brisbane).

23. Melbourne

Ryan Angwin (medium forward/defender)
Gippsland Power/Foster FC, 184cm, 72kg

Beyond the top 20 the draft appears to open up considerably. Another perceived bolter, Angwin is a beautiful left-foot kick who could help the Dees by providing another creative ball user to what still looks a blue-collar outfit at times. Meanwhile rival clubs expect Melbourne, along with Adelaide, to consider trading a second-round selection.

I know we've been linked with Angwin previously, and he has ability, but 1st round seems high and every likelihood that he's on the board at pick 28 (which we reportedly want to trade out). The buzz around Holmes seems very strong now, reminiscent of the momentum that built behind Oliver.

So where's the Holmes footage at?

You can watch him play here - he is number 64 and doesn't play a gamestyle most of the phantoms are describing, plays more a midsize marking role, rather than a runner.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU2LCzGPd5o&t=5365s

First involvement is at the 41:50s mark and he is reasonably prominent for most of the game as a high half-forward

Miles Bergman - last year first rounder - and a few draft chances are also playing - Jake Bowey, Jackson Callow and Lachie Carrigan among others.

I've only watched a brief bit of that footage but the main thing that stood out for me was how clean and composed Bowey is.  Would love to have him in our colours if he can bring that to AFL level.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
