Dee man 303 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 As tempting as it is to compile a whole list of delistings, I don't think we need to be making the wholesale changes that North Melbourne have gone for. Smaller list sizes will certainly impact on how many we cut, but this is a terrible year to be making significant cuts. We have a poor draft/trade hand and this year's draft will be severely compromised through both academy selections and COVID ruining many seasons for young prospects (and VFL players). I expect the two Wagners and KK to get cut and I won't be surprised if Preuss or Tmac gets traded, but I suspect we'll be keeping Omac, Brown, and Smith, who I'm sure many will inevitably call to be sacked. They may not be world beaters, but it's far more valuable to have those players on the list as depth rather than a bunch of speculative 18-year-olds that have barely played competitive footy in 12 months. As for guys like ANB, Vanders and Spargo - I'm pretty confident they'll be on the list next year. The lack of VFL means it's hard to get a read on some of the youngsters like Dunkley, Chandler and Bradkte but I wouldn't be rushing to cut any of them unless they're genuinely showing nothing. In my eyes, Dunkley is still a first year player who we were lucky enough to pluck earlier than the rest. I think they promised Nietschke another year when he got his injury, and Jordon seemed to be coming along well before the late injury so I think they're both safe. Bedford could be a really interesting one. Getting dropped after both of his games isn't a good sign, but he did a few things in both games and we still haven't found the right forward balance. Jones and Jetta also loom as interesting ones. Jetta has another year on his contract but you would suspect retirement would be option. Jones has been debated elsewhere in great detail and there's probably pros and cons keeping him on regardless of the milestone figure. Bennell is anyone's guess. I hope we keep him, but it's a bit hard to say after everything that's just happened today. While some may disagree, I think we were a bit too aggressive with list changes after 2018 (another fairly injury-free year) with Pedersen, Bugg, Kent, Vince all going at once. When injuries hit us hard in 2019, our depth was shot and we were uncompetitive. I hope the footy department are a bit wiser this time around. 21 1 Quote
Fanatique Demon 2,764 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 I really don't get the enormous hate for Oscar or the love for Hore. Oscar: by no means perfect but he is a good kick and generally a good decision maker. Yes, like all fringe players he makes mistakes sometimes, but look at our Demonland votes and notice he's in the top 22. Provides the extra height needed against tall forward lines. Hore: couldn't get a game at Collingwood. In 2019 he was frequently caught out of position and gave away unnecessary free kicks. Now he has been passed by Trent Rivers - a 19 year old in his first season. Even if he is retained, I doubt we'll see Hore selected in the team again. 6 1 1 2 Quote

He was never on Collingwoods AFL list. He was recruited from their VFL team after winning back to back best and fairest. At one stage last year he was leading the AFL competition for intercept marks. Oscar is finished. 5 years on the list and has not improved one bit. Matter of fact he's gotten worse. 12 1 3 Quote

I would like to see him get at least another year to have a proper run at it in a somewhat "normal" season. That way he can actually get a chance to develop in a proper second tier system if he's not getting senior games. 2 Quote
spirit of norm smith 16,679 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Oscar McDonald - turnovers and fumbles. Poor kick. Slow. Pushed aside. Goes to ground too easily. Played one good game v Hawks and six shockers. Hore - missed 2020 through injury. In 2019 he was leading intercept mark and above average for metres gained for defender. Kicked goal v Suns that setup the win. Missed him in 2020 and he’d be definitely back if burgo gets him up. 7 Quote

Ok, so I was mistaken about Hore and Collingwood. At what stage was Hore leading the AFL intercepts makes and how many did he have compared with others? Quote

spirit of norm smith 16,679 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Delist Dunkley, OMac?, Cwagner, JWagner, Joel Smith ?, Bradtke, Chandler, and ... unfortunately Bennell ?? Retire - Jetta?, Kk ? thats 10 off the list (down to 35) who is in the fringes ??? 1. I’m feeling compassion and I know I might be ridiculed but I’m giving Jonesy one more year. 2. Hannan and Spargo are just hanging on ... just 3. Bedford and Jordan are just hanging in for their development 4. Hunt and Baker saved themselves in the last 2 games and at least they’ve got pace which we lack trade discussion - Preuss (Giants?) Neal-Bullen (Crows?) Tmac (anyone who is interested). I reckon ideally at least two trades here (brings list down to 33) probably will entertain a discussion about Sparrow but would love to keep him (Crows would need to give us their 2nd round pick circa pick 19). List to rookie list - Nietschke (as promised ) I think the AFL will cut lists to 40 (37 plus 3 rookies) Quote
Devil In Disguise 2,284 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Re sign Smith? Well in that case l won't be paying his wages next season. The guy is clearly not up to it. No more than 5 possessions in all his games this year is not good enough. And don't suggest he is a good forward because he's been tried there before & done SFA. 3 Quote
Cheesy D. Pun 1,765 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Looking at the lists here, I really hope we can find a way to bring in some established talent. We're in dire need of forwards. Are there any big guys coming out of contract? Daniher comes to mind but are their others we could potentially poach? Quote

spirit of norm smith 16,679 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 I agree Hannan is still surviving on 2018 and his goal in the finals. Very frustrating player who has the tools to be a very good half forward. I understand he’s on the fringe as stated. 1 Quote

Dr. Gonzo 24,468 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 (edited) Going off the 2020 out of contract and rookie players in the pinned thread Delist OMac, Smith, Wagner, Wagner, Nietschke, Hannan, Bedford, Chandler, Dunkley, Jones Tradebait Fritsch Re-sign Viney, Hibberd, Spargo, Sparrow, Petty, Hunt, Jordon(?) Upgrade Brown and Lockhart to senior list Contracted players who should be moved on Jetta, Kolodjashnij, ANB, TMac, Preuss (may need to keep as insurance in case Max gets injured) Edited September 20, 2020 by Dr. Gonzo 3 Quote
deanox 10,070 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 When you look at that out of contract list, it's very hard to see Jones going on if there is a reduction in lost sizes. Viney, Hibberd, Hannan, Omac, Hunt, Spargo, Fritsch are all in the "best 26" (or close to it). Smith, Petty, Bedford, Sparrow, Hore, Jordan all seem to be promising, developing or young players who are on the fringe. Neita and Wagner are the only two obvious outs. Plus you need to upgrade Lockhart, and maybe Brown/Bennell. KK won't go on. Jetta is probably lucky to have another year. I think Preuss needs to stay as back up (if Gawn goes down we'd only have LJ). TMac and Harmes have long term deals but haven't been part of the best 22. I reckon we'll see the following gone: Jones, KK, Wagner, Neita, Bedford, Jordan, plus one of Smith, OMac or Hore (the three of them are playing for the same spot and all are out of contract). That's 7. Assume we need 2 draft picks, and have a net neutral trade/FA movement that allows a list reduction of 5, which should be more than enough. If we want to upgrade more than one of Lockhart, Brown or Bennell then we might need to lose another. In that case it might be a hard call on Sparrow (if we retain Brayshaw and Viney). I can't see any of the other rookies getting another year except for maybe Bradtke: but as a cat B, missing that year of football may have hurt his chances. Quote
