Someone mentioned that some of the coaches thought our midfield was uncoachable.  Would not surprise me if that revolved around JV.  If there was any truth to it anyway!  See Clayton and Petracca as absolutely coachable.  Brayshaw also seems like a smart guy and although a bit lethargic at times totally coachable too.

According to this article, Paul Roos states re: Viney that :

But there has been a really big change and he’s acknowledged it, and he's transformed his game and he became our most coachable player and our best listener.“

So what has happened to this Viney “coachability” in the intervening 5 years?

Weideman at least provided a contest.

His form will always be dependant on whether he is clunking his marks or not but at least he’s providing a target.

I still want to see Joel Smith down there with him.

When I saw that I couldn’t believe it was allowed, isn’t the free supposed to go to the player who won the free ie Trac should have been called back to take his free? Or was it an advantage play on? Even then I thought it had to be Trac to take the ball to take the advantage.

Just watching the highlights and the ump didn't call advantage. But it actually happened a second time in the match. Smith got a HTB call on Cameron on the half-back flank and Brown took the kick. Called 'play on'. I wonder how often this happens without me ever noticing it.

Well we have different KPIs for decent game titan -  in my opinion two possession game for a player who played 90% is the very definition of a poor game.

Come on - two possessions, and not single mark for a player who has license to get up and down the ground. You can't seriously suggest that is not a poor game?

He was as bad against Freo and again poor tonight. In the last 3 games he has a grand total of of 16 possessions and four marks, none contested.

But the issue i have is not those numbers - it can be hard for a forward to get possessions (though the odd mark would be nice).

The issue i have is that the last 3 games have all been season defining, must win games. Reputations are made, or not as the case may be i such games. And Weed has been miles off an acceptable level of pressure in all 3 games, tonight included.

As an example he did not lay a single tackle in any of the last 3 games. That is not on.

Maybe i should re-phrase. I don't think Weid has been as bad as you and others are suggesting.

The lack of tackles is the big knock - as I've said, I agree wholeheartedly that he needs to lift his second efforts when the ball hits the deck.

But as to the rest, you're looking across a pair of games in Cairns where our opponents (particularly Sydney) and our own ball movement made it difficult for him to get into the game. And as I've said, it's not like he's not buttering up and making marking contests. That part of his game has still been serviceable.

Just went to the MFC website against my better judgement and lost my shid immediately on seeing the headline.  A small step forward - Goodwin

Simon Goodwin says his side is still a work in progress

No.

The truth is that Goodwin is the work in progress and the club suffers as a result.

I'm done now. No more negativity.

But f^&k him.

He was much animated last night. Moved down to the boundary line in the last quarter.

Embracing players and pointing ...talking louder into the headpiece.

Pressure on him starting to bite.

It's okay, the umps often don't know who they're awarding the free kick to, so all good.

Yeah, there were a few raffles last night where the winner of the free didn’t even have a ticket.

Free was given for holding the man, with resultant goal to GWS. Melbourne player said after he never grabbed him and replay showed he didn’t. Umpire said” I thought “ you grabbed him. Since when are free paid for thinking something happened rather than seeing it actually happen?

Great feedback to him from May on playing his role by reinforcing the right behaviours:

“Both of his goals came from closing down his man and winning the ball back… I told him that’s what happens when you work hard and play your role.  “I’m super proud of him and that should give him a lot of confidence.”

Is that the last time we'll see Jetta in the red & blue? I wouldn't be surprised if he was to retire, and realistically he doesn't have much left in him. Spent his whole career getting battered without much protection from the umps (has to have one of the hardest heads in the league). A sad way to bow out if so - but fitting that it was through Nev doing Nev things. The club absolutely has to do everything it can to ensure he sticks around post-playing, even with the reduced soft caps.

Another small note on this. Was touching in the middle of everything to see Goodwin go to Jetta to acknowledge his efforts when Nev was looking a bit distraught. That's who I want coaching my football team.

Not really, no.

It's not like he was getting the ball served up to him on a platter but was dropping it or fumbling it. Or running to the wrong spots. Across these last three weeks he's been consistently in the right spots but consistently unable to impact. He's not as far off as the stats suggest.

Our entire team structure in the Sydney and Fremantle losses was appalling, which contributes to the problem.

I'm not excusing his downturn in form completely, he needs to lift, but I don't for a second think we should be dropping him.

He continuously failed to provide a contest against Sydney and Fremantle. The team defence against him in the Freo game was not as good as it was against Sydney and he still failed to bring the ball to ground.

I think he's had a good year for a young key position forward, but he's been very poor and a deadset liability the last three games IMV.

If we're to beat Essendon, he needs to be a lot stronger. For a guy his size, with a few pre seasons under his belt now, he gets outmuscled far too easily.

Goodwin obviously has a good relationship with the players.

However tactically he is ordinary. After four years our kick out strategy is kick it to Max or Salem, that’s it! The opposition go to Max, last night GWS won the ball back nearly every time it was kicked to Mac!

After four years ourbackline still lets the like of Daniels this week, Walters last week get a free ride - look like we finally addressed it with Lockhart Mid season and he hasn’t been seen last three weeks!

There are many more examples!

What about the examples where Goodwin has shown himself to be a tactical innovator? He may have failed in a number of attempts but he's not a dead fish like he's made out to be on here. The heat on the team over the past two seasons has delimited his breathing space, but Simon is a bright mind and a dedicated student of the game and sport in general. I get that the fans have run out of patience, yet the confirmation bias on here is strong. Team does poorly, it was Goodwin's fault; team does well, it was somehow in spite of Goodwin.

Hmm that really does make you wonder.  Better midfield coach i think we need either way.  Feel like considering our onball talent ,there is a very limited amount of craft going on.  Both Petracca and Oliver do some sublime things, both can become so much more.   Exciting that i think neither are close to hitting their ceiling yet.  Brayshaw too has not hit his ceiling either.  I find Jack hard to rate....i think he has lot of things he could do to improve upon, and many of them are relatively simple fixes.  Ultimately i guess we need to find a way to get the best out of all of them. Each of them to me want to be champions of the game, particularly Clayton and Petracca.

That moment where Trac won a midfield HTB and then just flat-out sprinted forward. He has become a smart footy-player alongside Oliver. They both now do things that will hardly ever be noticed or respected. Oliver again with three or four breath-taking in-close moments tonight. This is the best mid-field pairing we've ever had in my life-time following the Dees.

Just have to keep them together mate. Number one priority.

Add Harmes and Brayshaw and there's a bit of diversity in that mix, alongside Langdon's gut-running.

I don't have any real doubt that both are Melbourne players (although I would have thought that about Viney and Brayshaw once too). While Trac has been widely acknowledged for stepping up this season - I still don't think he is getting enough credit. Still team first - and when both he and Oliver step up to their level against Collingwood (it's been a gruelling season and not a huge surprise they've both tapered off a bit) they will be the new leaders of our club. It could be as soon as next season.

Interesting!! First time I recall seeing it but probably happens often. I suspect those umpires won’t be getting any finals games.

More analytical gold Gonzo.

How did you rate Goodwins emotions last night? Were they satisfactory for you, or do you think if he punched a wall we would have had it sown up by half time?

Don't be stupid UH. You've completely misinterpreted the gist of my original comments about that. I rate you as a poster so not sure why you've descended into sniping at other posters this year.

Obviously my point was if the midfield coach (Mathews?) is telling outsiders the players are uncoachable it might actually be his coaching abilities that are the problem, and not the players. That's if the comments are true which I take with a grain of salt.

All good mate.

Enjoy a win.

But you could right about Matthews. I personally hadn't even heard those comments (my own ignorance), and we can only hope if true that it's dealt with.

Did you actually read the article or even better listen to the presser? Goodwin was sending a clear message to the players to not get ahead of themselves - something we all get disappointed with on here time after time.

“I spoke last week about growing up as a footy club and it was to execute our roles and play like we did in pressure situations.

“It was a step forward as a footy club – there’s no question about that.

“I thought some of the maturity of some of our young guys especially was outstanding, but we’ve got to create a new pathway forward and play this way week in, week out.

“All we’ve done is given ourselves an opportunity to play the same way again next week.”

What exactly do you take exception to from those quotes?

Watch the presser. It was a gutsy and emotional win and we celebrated accordingly. But then Goody was smart enough to immediately put the brakes on and adopt a terse, unfinished business attitude.

I'm certain that will be the messaging in-house this week as well. Goodwin also doesn't write the headlines.

Absolutely not.  Not a chance.  Why would I do that?  But seeing that you highlighted his comments.  Lets have a look at them.

“It was a step forward as a footy club – there’s no question about that. - This,  after two steps backwards in the last two weeks. So on the balance of it we're still a 'step' behind.

“I thought some of the maturity of some of our young guys especially was outstanding," - wow.   what insight!

but we’ve got to create a new pathway forward and play this way week in, week out' -  No shid Sherlock. 'Create a new pathway forward' Fu%^ me.  Someone hand me a bucket so I can throw up in it. I wish he had of said 'I' have to make them play this way each week. Still obvious but i wouldn't have needed a spew.

“All we’ve done is given ourselves an opportunity to play the same way again next week.” - Boooooring.

You've reaffirmed my belief in never listening to this clown, win or loss.  He's just a dot ball Skuit.  Let's be bloody honest. He'll take us nowhere.  He's f^%&ed it up for two seasons in a row now. The only new pathway that needs to be created is one for him to take back to Adelaide.

Simon f%^&*#g Goodwin. Bloody hell.

It's completely unnecessary.  A nice touch would be high five your mates, put your [censored] head down and start thinking about the next possession.  Homage to Angus? Did Angus pass away.  Have I missed something?

After watching the replay I’m still amazed Salem didn’t get a free kick in the 3rd qtr for tunneling. I thought the subsequent somersault and landing on his head was visible enough for even these crappy umpires to see. Exactly why the rule was brought in.

This is EXACTLY why the rule was brought in  A more obvious example you could not find.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
