Well, well!  Just saw this:  kangaroos-are-shopping-ben-brown-to-other-clubs

Sounds like North will test the water and if Brown gets a package that lands them a 1st round pick they will let him go.

I believe Barrett is a North supporter so he would have good mail.

"Brown is out of contract at the end of the 2020 season, but is not a free agent"

not sure  how that then will get a comp pick for him ?

Thanks for that.  Not sure why I thought he is an FA.  Changes the story a bit.

Edit:  Thanks to @markcfor info to say Brown is out of contract, not an FA so the quoted post doesn't apply.

@dazzledavey36 can i get your expert (or at least more expert than me) opinion on a few juniors you may know of?

Kaine Baldwin, SA

Logan McDonald, WA

Jackson Callow, TAS

Have heard that, as far as key forwards go, these are kids we may look at.

Please never ever mention Bradtke. The guy is a vfl reserves quality player.

Tom McDonald has proven to have gone severely backwards since 2018. Has really slowed down.

Jackson is a predominant ruckman.

Weideman is a good prospect.

Petty has debilitating injuries and hasn't proven himself yet (even though I rate him).

So enter Wright. Never hurts to have depth as we've seen with Tom McDonald that things can slow down very quickly.

"Exactly what we need for depth."

Not very compelling but OK.  Pull out all stops ...

Draft 2020. Likely only 3 picks with reduced lists. Skilled ball users and running ability. My early list from under 18s cohort is

Zac Dumesny -SA (Likely Draft range 20-25)

Jack Carroll -WA (20-25)

Jack Ginnivan - Bendigo (25-30)

Nick Stevens - Greater Western Vic (25-30)

Jamieson Murphy -SA (25-30)

Joshua Clarke - Eastern (35-40)

Patrick Walker -Tassie (45-50)

Ty Sears -WA (55-60)

Harry Sharp - Greater Western Vic (55-60)

I don’t think we have key position players on the menu. It could depend on the recovery of Petty. May still look at Ollie Lord (Sandringham) as a big Full Forward as a rookie if available.

No need to trade big this year. We have the nucleus across the park. Need to stay healthy.

I feel the same but it didn't seem that way 2.5 weeks ago.

I feel there's a few players that if they went down, so too might our team.   Obviously our stars in the midfield but as we have number of them they can hopefully be covered a bit more easily.  The ones i think we'd struggle to cover currently are:

Gawn is the obvious and at least we now have a few other options.

Hibberd for mine is also critical - he provides so much drive from the backline and is prepared to take the longer high risk high reward kick that starts off many of our scoring chains.  I assume Rivers was recruited to play this role long term but is just a kid.

Langdan - his fitness and speed have got us out of trouble on so many occasions.  With him out of the side I feel we would be greatly exposed.  I wonder if Hunt could play this role? I suspect not.

Pickett - haven't seen enough of Bedford to know if he could cover Kozzie

I have not seen Baldwin but huge wraps from 2018 under 16s championships. Will still go top 12 given his potential and key forward.
McDonald (Jack Darling type) and Callow (Charlie Curnow type , solid and good mark) were at last years under 18 championships and are both physically strong key forwards. Again I think they’ll be gone by the end of the 1st round or early second round selections probably around picks 17-22 mark

Thanks mate! Have heard a little about who we rate but tbh I don't follow the draft as closely anymore so don't have much of an idea about who they are etc. Appreciate the info.

Have heard some people suggest this year is the perfect year to push the draft age back by 12 months with many of the juniors not playing etc  Does anyone know if this idea has gained any traction?

Assuming there are no such changes, I think the lack of exposed form might make the draft more of a lottery which makes our trading of our first pick last year look even better.  Hopefully Taylor and co can find a couple of bargains wherever our picks land.

Here is 9 youngsters that showed they are excellent users of the footy across outside midfield roles or half back. Dees should look to add at least two of such youngsters based on efficiency skills.

I think Dees recruiters should look at continuing the East Fremantle connection.

Two youngsters fit our job requirements of pace and skill. Jack Carroll and Brandon Walker.  Both will be drafted around the 20-25 mark.    Unfortunately Walker is in NGA academy so we’d have to hope they didn’t match our draft bid. He’s a silky mover with pace to burn.
Carroll is a classic midfielder who reminded me a little of Sam Walsh.

Callum Twomey has listed Jack Carroll at pick 18 in his draft prospect update. He’s rising up the draft options as the WA colts (Like SA Under18s) are playing and getting a lot of extra attention. The kid is exactly what the Dees need with pace and skill, and his connection with Jackson and Rivers would be good for the future.

Might have to consider Eddie Ford as another option. Fast and tough and skilled. I spoke with someone from the west suburbs of Melbourne who follows the under 18s and reckons last year as a underager he was playing like a former Jets youngster called  Callan Ward. Big wraps.

I've watched Logan McDonald a few times and he is fantastic. Current equal leader in the WAFL goalkicking as an 18 year old! He will go top 10 for sure if not top 5. Don't know about the Jack Darling comparison, he has a good engine but doesn't look like he'll be as solid as Darling. His physique reminds me of Westhoff from Port. His aerial ability is impressive.

Don't know about the other two you mentioned.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
