Wizz in trouble again

Doesn't look good for young Jeffrey. Another Brain Explosion, compounded by the fact that his opponent dobbed him in - you could only assume he will offer evidence to the tribunal. Eye gouging is nasty - both for the potential harm to a player and the reputation of the game. You would think with Jeff's record at least four to six weeks is warranted, but we always seem to cop him coming back from injury or suspension. Any bets on whether he gets three weeks?

2 weeks with a guilty plea as it only looked like a slight punch to the eye. I'm probably wrong.

I hope he gets either 2 or 4 weeks.

4 weeks would see him miss Melb V Freo. 2 weeks and he'll return against West Coast.

But if gets 3, he'll be back for our clash and he'll take out his anger on us - I gurantee you that.

I'm fast losing respect for my former hero. I'm not sure if he's a nice guy off the field, but he's a [censored] on it.

I went to the game yesterday (Roos V Freo) and he was in every scuffle available. He's just an angry little thug who starts fights left right and centre , and I have no time for players of his ilk. No wonder every man and his dog boo him.

When he finally relaxed, he kicked 2 or 3 goals in the last qtr to nearly steal the game for the Dockers.

Agree Graz, a horrible incident. It was an unprovoked gouge to the eye.

IMO there should be a huge penalty for this. The eyes are off limits for me.

I'd give him 11 weeks, half a season. No doubt he'll get 2 weeks to be served over the NAB Cup Challenge series (or whatever it is)!!

Jeff's lucky he's playing in the modern era. 30 years ago, players had their own way of sorting out this sort of tactic. I think there is well and truly an onus on the AFL to send the strongest possible message in relation to such incidents.

Nar, you can't serve suspensions in NAB Challenge practice games.

Bad luck Wiz.

There's an inequity here, eg if two players each got 3 weeks for belting each other in NAB Cup Round One and one player's team went on to play in the Grand Final he'd be right for the Home and Away season whereas the other bloke would still have his 3 weeks to serve. There'd be some sort of match payment discrepancy as well. Just seems a bit silly to me. Should be the same for everyone.

Given the lack of importance that NAB Cup holds then all suspensions should apply to H & A games. I still smart over the penalty given out to Michael Long in the 2000 Grand Final for almost crippling Simmonds. Got 2 NAB cup games.

As for the Wiz, he is as difficult off the ground as he is on it. When on song, he's a champ. Too often he is the chump. A sad waste of talent for a player who so often displays a truely nasty and unpleasant side that undermines the class he is capable of. We saw the best of him at Melbourne. I dont want him back.

I have not seen it. But if it is an eye gouge incident then he should go for significant time.

Agree on all counts Rhino

He deserves to be suspended for a long time

Defnitely dont want him back

Wiz cops four, or six if he challenges and loses (from the AFL):

Jeff Farmer, Fremantle, has been charged with misconduct in that he eye-gouged Daniel Pratt, the Kangaroos, during the fourth quarter of the Round Two NAB Cup match between Fremantle and the Kangaroos, played at Telstra Dome on Sunday March 4, 2007.

In summary, his existing poor record and carry-over demerit points within the last 12 months means that his sanction will remain at four games imposed for the offence if he takes an early plea.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of seven activation points, which relates to a Level Four offence, drawing 425 demerit points and a four-match sanction. He has an existing poor record of two matches suspended within the last three years, which increases the sanction by 20 per cent to 510 points and a five-match sanction. He has also 95.86 demerit points from within the last 12 months, which increases the sanction to 605.86 points and a six-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 454.40 points and a four-match sanction.

Word around town is that Freo will appeal the severity of the suspension.

So he'll prob get 3 weeks and be back for our game...knowing our luck.

Hmmm. I'd like to see their rationale, "we think four weeks is too severe for an intenional act that could have permanently damaged the vision of another player." If they do challenge, then I hope the AFL imposes the maximum penalty - it was a needless and violent act of stupidity that severly damages the reputation of the game. I think that they need to go away and assess the way they come up with these penalties. I agree with Fan, I think a player that does this should look to spend at least half a season on the sideline.

If it goes to the Tribunal and is confirmed he gets six weeks. The Club may well see its way to leaving well-enough alone.

The only mitigating factors are the apparent lack of injury and absolutely conclusive vision of the incident.

Freo have confirmed they will challenge the verdicts for Farmer and Michael Johnson. Wiz is flying to Melbourne to defend himself in person.

Micheal Johnson is also facing 3 to 4 weeks for rough conduct vs kangaroos

I'm more worried about johnson playing than farmer. I'd back in Bell on Farmer. But Johnson was just about BOG for both H&A games last year, and in the final was only beaten on the day by Miller from memory (I could have that wrong). If Freo are relieved of his services in round four that would make things a bit tricker for them, especially in defence, and particularly at the G.

Farmer has hurt us in the past and could do it again.

He is a proven finals performer who can turn a match on his ear. Not even Whelan could hold him if he is switched on.

Johnson is a capable player who has the potential to improve on a good year last year.

He was hardly BOG in the MCG match last year as Freo got flogged by 10 goals and his efforts though better than his teammates was hardly earth shattering.

Yeah, yeah, yeah Rhino. He was THEIR BOG. And as far as I'm concerned was as well performed on the day as Trapper, Ooze, Pickett, Brock, Davey or Green. It was a sensational day for the dees, as a TEAM, but he was the most dominant tall, IMO. Yes Farmer has hurt us in the past, but I am pleased with the WAY Bell plays him on match day. At worst I'd predict that a fit Jeff against a fit Bell would kick 2 goals, and I'm comfortable with that, especially if it frees up Wrecker to take someone else, or play looser and gather more possessions, as he showed a propensity for in 2006.

Over those 2 H&A matches Johnson was clearly their best performed. That's more than enough for me to worry more about his match-up than Jeff's, particularly when we have our KPD problems, Johnson can play both ends equally well and they have so many talls to call upon (Tarrant, Pavlich, McPharlin etc etc).

Yep. I would be more worried about MJ on the day than JF, assuming both were to play. Boil it all down and I'd still pick us at the G in any scenario, but it would advantage us GREATLY if both guys didn't play.

Found guilty, given six weeks and unfortunately therefore will miss the Round 4 clash Melbourne v Fremantle!!!

 Clearly, it's a travesty of justice that we should be deprived of the opportunity to see our great Wizard playing against us on the MCG. I guess we'll have to wait till grand final day to see him play against us on the G.

As much as I hate to say it, I had very big wraps on the Dockers this year.

I think it’s fair to say that on Jeffs 6 week’s suspension alone, they are going to struggle now. 6 weeks is a long time, then finding form afterwards, he thrives on confidence young Jeffery, and I reckon he could struggle to find it when he returns.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
