A couple of strange ones round 5 at mcg at 12.00 surely not a curtain raiser! What will the AFL think of next? Round 12 at Williamstown start time 12.00 very early start. Round 19 Whitten oval at 11.00 am??? The season ends mid August as a seconds /feeder competition that isn't ideal.

The VFL is a joke!  Should be a full Reserves comp, with the fixtures mirroring the AFL fixture.  (With games as curtain raisers to the seniors!)  Yeah, I know.  I'm completely delusional!  Back under my rock!

They re-introduced this idea last year. I believe our ressies played the Bulldogs before our clash with them at Marvel.

11/30 ...11/45... 12 midday.  Wow.  Early to bed for the Casey boys.  

No trip to the fabulous Port oval for the exquisite Burra burger nor to Frankston oval by the sea.

Coburg oval closed for renovations.

The wonderful traditional grounds are fading.

We do get a game at Preston but the old Preston oval is unrecognizbale if compared to its traditional self.

Enjoy the VFL while you can. It's a dying comp.

No game at windy Hill either DJ. Enjoyed my visits there and Coburg.

Any news on the 2020 VFL season?  Because AFL listed players can’t compete in the VFL, does that mean Casey wouldn’t participate this year?? 

There’s a proposal for the competition to go ahead with stand alone clubs Coburg, Frankston, Port Melbourne, Werribee and Williamstown will join AFL affiliated clubs Box Hill Hawks, Casey Demons and Sandringham. Expect an announcement shortly. 

Other than money the reason advanced for the cessation of the aligned clubs was the isolation issue and the prospect of cross infection etc. between the AFL "bubble" and outside.

If community sport is allowed I see little reason for those cross infection rules to continue. Sure one can argue that there is a chance of community infection but the risks are very low to minimal.

Unfortunately it will be minimum to zero crowds for the short term at least.

Casey (without MFC alignment) has about 15-16 listed players including 6-7 under 18 graduates. It’s hard to see them participating without getting another 10-15 players from metro leagues as top ups.  

VFL season ‘looks like it’s a goer’ as clubs and AFL crunch numbers

For the benefit of those who might be blocked by a paywall, the theme of the article is that despite a number of unresolved issues, clubs are becoming increasingly confident a VFL season will go ahead.

The competition will involve stand-alones Coburg, Frankston, Port Melbourne, Werribee and Williamstown alongside aligned sides Casey Demons, Sandringham and Box Hill Hawks.

The season could be as short as 7 weeks starting in August with players foregoing match payments. The finals would be played in October.

Elsewhere, it’s been mooted that Casey might even use Shepley Oval (the old Dandenong VFA ground) to train because sharing facilities would make it difficult to adhere to Covid19 protocols.

Interesting times ahead for the VFL and the traditionalists will be hoping the competition can survive. What makes it more problematic is the fact that there are so many unknowns about the future of second and third tier football with so much unresolved such as AFL list sizes, what happens to the northern clubs and the NEAFL and even the NAB Under 18 competition.

For starters, two strong suburban leagues have folded for 2020 and one of them - the Eastern Football League is in close proximity to both Casey and Box Hill so they could supply top up players. 

Though we don’t know about future lists, Melbourne would be wise to encourage players with AFL potential to the fold so it could keep an eye on their development. Think Bayley Fritsch, Jay Lockhart and our old favourite Declan Keilty.

Agreed KC. Though Box Hill Hawks would snap up a lot of the Eastern League available players imo rather than Casey.  

I thought Ryan Morrison showed real potential in 2018 yet was hijacked by the Kangas. Like to see him back. Also think that Campbell Hustwaite from the Pies should be “invited” for the season. Shows real AFL potential and was close to being drafted last year.

AFL Victoria told clubs today that the VFL season will proceed this year with full contact training starting on Monday July 13 with the opening round starting on Saturday August 1.

No AFL-listed players will take part in the competition but the eight clubs will be Box Hill, Casey, Coburg, Frankston, Port Melbourne, Sandringham, Werribee and Williamstown.

Good luck but...... (the message needs to be improved.. there's a chance here if they can get it right....whatever right is)

Team will have no MFC players because of Covid19.

Again have to stress that it will be hard to see Casey play against Williamstown, Port Melbourne or Werribee that are cashed up and compete well against the AFL blended aligned teams.  Maybe a win or two is the outlook. 

Two players that I am looking forward to seeing are Kurt Mutimer (ex WC Eagles) and Ryan Sparkes (Gippsland under 18s).  Mutimer was unlucky to be delisted by Eagles and has strong AFL qualities. Excellent disposal.  Sparkes is a strongly built wing type with good pace and skilled on either side. Both are ones to watch in the “short” VFL season. 

Good news for us Fields 'locals', if they're going to allow spectators. Also, then, if they can wear the MFC jumper (save for BH(?), the other teams have non-AFL strips)

Wonder if melbourne members can get in for free ?

Agree with this, fielding locals will attract local supporters back to this level.  It is going to be an interesting few months as the AFL works through 2021 and what their clubs look like.  I love the idea of community football at this level, it will be better product then watch the way AFL players are turned into robots.

 

Paul Amy has reported that former Dandenong Stingrays premiership captain and leather-tough onballer Campbell Hustwaite has joined the Casey Demons for the shortened VFL season after an encouraging debut year with Collingwood VFL in 2019.

Hustwaite is on board. Good move by Casey. Hopefully Jason Taylor is watching because this kid has AFL potential. 
 

I think an invite to Billy Guerts, an exciting former Stingray in 2018, who played in 2019 in Mornington Peninsula league and led Dromana to a grand final win. Big lad.  Good ruck option to help Casey’s ruck division. Signed by VFL Pies but should be available.
