Interesting how now that we’ve missed out on Elliott, Papley isn’t just looking at Carlton.

Always got that ear of yours to the ground, don't you, mate? Incredible how you do it. Very good hearing.

As a matter of relation, since Papley wants to come to Victoria, I wonder if Sydney would entertain Papley for Hannan and a (future) second rounder? They're not getting a top 10 pick for him.

Yep sorry realised that after I posted

Definitely would need to remain in the top 12ish in the draft is we're giving up pick 3 for Papley. Maybe Sydney split pick 5 with GWS and give us say Papley and 11 (GWS) for pick 3 and 40

Then maybe they trade pick 3 and a second rounder to Essendon for Daniher? Just a thought

They end up essentially trading Papley and pick 5 for Daniher and pick 18

Sounds fair to me :) Good scenario.

Of course they are.

They are the most desperate person at the dance.

does raise a significant salary cap issue including pay relativity for the likes of Brayshaw, Oliver and Petracca.

I rate Papley higher than most here.  If someone had told me we'd trade pick three for Papley and Langdon I'd have been fairly happy.  So on that basis pick 3 for Papley and Sydney's second rounder fits.

We won't get him, his salary is the sticking point and if NM are offering $800,000 that's us out of the equation.  But he's exactly what we need and we should be in the conversation.

Seems Carlton are willing to part with one deservedly or not.

Well, they can probably afford to as they brought in a pretty handy pick 1 last year.

We haven't used one for three off seasons.

Agreed. We simply cannot afford the asking price. In my opinion he's not going to choose one of the lowly clubs over another based on premiership prospect. Dollars (along with compensation to Sydney) are going to be the deciding factor. We may be able to match the compo but not the cashola.

Which is why I don't want to part with it. I'm not sold on splitting the pick either to land a Papley.

The Blues into more Judd like shenanigans.

The Blues could be forced into some creative accounting work to convince Betts of his prospects of earning money as a Carlton club ambassador and club official following his retirement, according to The Herald Sun.

North have the pick before Carlton. So if they have offered more and Papley wants the dollars, also since have a better pick, that makes it easier for Sydney to get Daniher.

Agree.

Draft picks are over rated. Posters saying flat out no to Pick 3 for Papley are effectively guaranteeing for example that Caleb Serong will be a far better player.  Risky business!

Obviously it depends on the talent in the draft pool, but generally speaking I would expect a superior footballer than Papley at pick 3.

He's a good player, no doubt, but he's no star. He wouldn't even be classified as a great player IMO.

Early picks give you the chance to grab a star or at least a player you hope will be in your top 6-8 players. Of course drafting is a risk, but if you don't take risks and you trade away pick 3 for good solid citizens like Papley you rob yourself of a prime opportunity to add elite talent to your list.

The general consensus on the Langdon trade is an early second round pick and I'd take Langdon over Papley.

800K for Papley??  North still think they have the list to win a flag and are still topping up.  Hilarious!

papley hasnt even put in any 45-50 goal seasons.

ave 15 touches this year and 2.8 tackles.  I don't get it.

I don’t think anyone is thinking Papley for pick 3.  We’d want something pretty significant back.

North aren't worried about winning a flag.  (would be nice to have though).Their aim is to remain relevant and push for the 5-10 position.

You have to admit they do a good job at it.

The circus around him is ridiculous. There's been some enormous amounts of overvaluing players worth both $$ and especially picks at the moment. Dwayno Russell suggesting Dougal Howard was worth a top 10 pick takes the cake

The 5-10 position is irrelevancy. Only going deep in finals makes you relevant.

under brad scott north made prelim finals three times, i think?

their last decade-plus has been far superior to ours

They made two in a row, but from outside of the top 4 every time.

Absolutely had more success than us, but the bar is so low it's not even worth mentioning. Besides, no one is saying we're particularly relevant either.

Offering that sort of money is such a Norf game thing to do.

Also getting rejected for that sort of money is such a Norf game thing to do.

At least when we pay overs the players come to us.  :P

Yep they are doing a great job at not winning the flag

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
