Is he a lockdown type defender?    We are desperate for a Jetta replacement

Dogs were putting him under pressure all day with repeat forward entries and he stood up really well

He was supercompetitive one v one, even left his man to jump and punch the ball away

His disposal was good under pressure with no costly turn overs

He's great to watch

Pretty lean, as you would expect given he has probably been training his guts out trying to win a spot but given his ability and determination it's not a major issue

5 games in the seniors should put an end to that.

On a serious note though, great news and best of luck to both.  Keep going hard!

No return date for Smith or Hibberd, Lockhart out probably for a month, Nietschke and Hore done for the season.

We needed a small defender for a needs basis, so even if the kid could barely lace up his boots he had a path to a list spot.

If he’s showing promise at training and VFL level and is aggressive and athletic with scope for development then it’s a no brainer.

i'm not surprised really. we look light on for defenders with a few injuries about and Jetta's moving like he's ready for a mobility scooter these days.

Was he #40 ?

I was at the game, but wasnt sure who Smith was. Only clue was players calling #40 "Deaks"

If so, then agree that he looked pretty good.

  • Demonland changed the title to WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - DEAKYN SMITH

Welcome aboard Deakyn Smith, keep working hard and stay fit young man, there are a number of spots that will open up as the season rolls on, if you are good enough. So good luck and make the most of your opportunities at the mighty Dee's !!!!!.

Got halfway through the sentence and thought it was going to say he was debuting against Freo.

His time will come anyways.

haven't seen any footage of him but he comes across in the interview well. mature and ready to put in. love that he's into the idea of locking someone down as a defender too.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
