This doesn't look good for our future

Lots of development of Dees' players required quickly.

Why? We had the most number of players in this team last year if I remember correctly. Most would be +22 now.

Ideally most premiership teams have a core of 26-28 year olds in their prime. We are knocking on the door. This is why Goodwin and co absolutely need to fill the gaps because we need to get as much finals experience into this core group as possible. Otherwise we'll just end up with a team of Nathan Jones'.

Quick rise back up. 2019 was a failure. Fail quickly. Mini rebuild this offseason built around our core group of Oliver, Brayshaw, Tmac, Fritsch, Trac, Gawn, Lever, Salem, May. Move on Jones. Keep Lewis for another year. Move Jetta into a player-coaching role. Trade Hibberd and get some more class in our defensive 6.

Make a decision on AVB. Either get him playing senior footy or get rid of him. Trade ANB and get in players that can impact the contest. Some outside run to help Harmes and compliment Oliver. Do what you can to get Hill over the line.

Touch decisions need to be made.

Because over the next couple of years we will lose Lewis, Jones, Jetta, Hibberd and Garlett, most of whom are regulars, from an already  poor team and the replacements are not obvious. We should have quality young players with a couple of years on the list ready to take over when the time comes.

Yes I did add to my comment to address this (mostly). Jones and Garlett are not huge losses imo. Lewis and Jetta moreso than anyone. I would keep Lewis for another year and start getting Jetta into a coaching role.

This is the direct result of not drafting any elite young talent in the first round of the draft for four years.

Clayton Oliver says hi!

23-25 year olds on MFC list:

Best 22: Salem, Harmes, Petracca, Lever, Brayshaw

Solid performers: Hore, Hunt

Depth/Developing: Preuss, JKH, OMac, ANB

Currently injured: J.Smith, KK

There are 42 in that list if I counted right.  With 18 clubs, on average there would only be 2.3 from each team.  So we seem to be average with 2 and it's hard to find 0.3 of a player though some might say some on our list are worth about that. (Lots of development would be nice too).

Exactly the point. If we didn’t trade away 3 first round draft picks for players who can’t stay on the park, we could have 3 more Clayton Oliver’s out there now.

There's only one Clayton Oliver.

So you're saying Lever and May are permanent busts?  I look forward to having this conversation same time in 2020.

Lever looks like a bust for what we paid. Two first rounders is superstar territory, and he isn’t a superstar. I rate him as a good player, but it appears his body isn’t up to the rigors of afl. For roughly the picks we gave up we could've had Aaron Naughton and Xavier Duursma.

May has been a disappointment thus far. He’ll be 29 next year so it’s not like we have him playing for long either. We could’ve got him for free this year via free agency instead.

I find it confusing that most on here are defensive of the clubs list management choices. We’re 17th. They got it wrong. Proof is in the pudding. We need to focus on bringing in elite youth now to rectify the mistakes made and rebalance the list.

6 from Carlton .

How come Henry from Gellong missed out  and Blakey from Swans

It is bizarre, isn't it? If we have a similarly disappointing year in 2020, we're looking at another 3-4 years down the bottom as we rebuild our list again.

Next year is either we sharply improve and content, or we stay where we are. IMO there is no in between that will occur.

Interesting that you selected the two players that were chosen directly BEFORE our selections in both those 2017 and 2018 drafts - players that would not have been available to us - so no we couldn't have had Naughton or Duursma.  But then your argument looks a bit weaker if you nominate Lochie O'Brien and Liam Stocker who were actually taken at the traded picks doesn't it?

Fair bit of leverage taken with nearly everything in this post. May will turn 28 early next year. We got Lever and Petty for essentially  Lachie O'Brien and Liam Stocker.

Are you also saying that had we brought in more youth last draft that we wouldn't be in the same position? Surely we spent so many years going back to the draft that the time is to focus on winning, we made the prelim last year and you suggest that youth is the way to go?? We've had an ordinary season but in no way would a few extra young kids have made it any better.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
