Should we make mention of the fact that Gawn used to smoke on the way to training, vomited on Tom Scully due to intoxication and [censored] about for a number of years before the penny dropped? Orย that Harmes has publicly admitted that up until the 2018 pre-season, he was never in the condition he needed to be in? Or maybe that Jetta needed a wake-up call by being delisted and given a rookie lifeline to seize his opportunity and put the required work in?

Great post Steve. I believe it's questionable however as to whether it was intoxication that was the cause of Maxy spewing on $cumbag. I think it's just another example of good judgement.

ย

@Flag Favourites 3019may have drawn a long bow to compare Hogan to Watts and Sylvia but he was merely noting that another talent may go begging and that we are better off for the Hogan/May trade.

Remember this was is first post.ย  He made some well expressed good points and praised the club for their work.ย  Let's cut him some slack so that he feels free to post again without attracting harsh judgement or implication of NFI.

Sorry but Steve is already right on this one. Hogans work while at the MFC is proof he was a hard working professional. Add going down to the Holden centre nearly every day by himself to work on his goal kicking and going to watch other AFL games to study how other forwards worked.

He may well fall off the cliff butย who would blame him. Only people with NFI.

I donโ€™t doubt that he has been a wonderful trainer but training is only half of what it takes to reach your full potential. Being a greatย AFL football is a full time job.ย He has been a party boy with poor body language since his inception. The tragic circumstances of recent do not change that...He started off well but whereโ€™s the exponential development we all expected (and yes I acknowledge heโ€™s been played up the ground last year)...Time will tell, that comment is fair.

Very happy to eat humble pie. Yes his life has been hard, that goes without saying surely....

Off his chops at The Ice Cream Factory, classic Hogan. Looks like heโ€™s having a seizure.ย

He is 23 years old, think about that for minute.

I agree with almost everything you wrote asideย from theย vomiting on Tom Scully as if it was a bad thing.ย

Hogan may never reach his potential, you're right.

But that'll have nothing to do with a 'laziness' or 'arrogance' as you suggested in your sentence below.

ย "While I wish Hogan all the best and still think he will be an okay footballer, heย screams ofย Watts and Sylvia 2.0. No, it doesn't go without saying. It's atย the very centre of this debate.

Ones perspective on lifeย changes dramaticallyย after experiencingย the death of a parentย at the age of 22.ย

I can't begin to explain how much you'reย underestimating that.

I didn't say he had NFI, I'm talking about anyone who thinks Hogan should just get on with it and act like a professional as his getting paid so much money ect ect.ย

Majority of his post was excellent but heย started his very 1st post with "mark my words", ย screams of old poster RR / ETD.

I said he wasnโ€™t willing to put in the hard yards to become a champion not just an okay or good footballer.

Hard yards includes behaviour at training, on game day AND outside of that.ย His behaviour on the weekends and time offย (which we all know too well in Perth)ย since he joined MFC and not just after tragic eventsย demonstrates my point exactly.

Further, talks about his poor body language and arrogant swaggerย on game day have been consistent throughout his career, not just after tragic events.

We at Melbourne are not so good in turning our young elite recruits into top flight players. . see 'Trapper', and many many others since him.

IMO we accord them way too high a profile, in social forums...ย  allowing them to drink their own cool-aid when out in social gatherings, amongst their peer social groups.

ย

YET, of our other not so shiny talents... most do very well in their efforts to grow as players, and as people.ย  > see Jonesy.

This club has a habit of drowning its teenage elite recruits,ย  'in-self'.

Not much. Rum and Mushroom, or other vegetarian ice cream, I imagine would do the trick.

Point is, he looks wasted.ย  Head on girlfriends lap. In his first preseason with his hometown club.

ย

I like Jesse... and feel for him, but this isn't the way forward for him, his club, and his footy career.

Thankfully those days are over.ย  Just today it was reported that recruits spent the first month living with a senior player, went to Alice on a camp together (again with club leaders) and will live together for 3 weeks in Kooyong as part of their induction to the club.ย  They will learn early what is required of them and importantly given the internal relationships to support them now and as they develop.

For what it's worth, there has been chatter about Hogan for a couple of years now. I was heartbroken when it looked as though he was gone, but I've come to the conclusion that the 'Brains Thrust'ย ย behind Melbourne's recent success felt the Melbourne Football Club was better off without him. I can only assume their knowledge and insight is keener and sharper than ours, I also assume they had their reasons for brokering his decision to terminate his contract.ย

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
