It's 2018 and we've just come off a prelim final loss. 

Our time is now. 

Look at the different phases our list has gone through since 2013, a year in which we finished second bottom with a percentage of 54. 

We've built through the draft and have an abundance of talent now who are all hitting the 50+ game mark together. We culled what we needed to during those dark years and at the same time needed to pick up some mature stop-gap players who are now being pushed out of our side.

Whilst unfortunate for the individuals, these signs are nothing but positives for our club. Players like Tyson, Kent, Bugg and Pedo have all been serviceable during our rebuild. Tyson even had a better than serviceable year as an inside mid but our younger talent have developed and pushed him out. Again, a positive outcome. 

Just trust the FD. Look at the position we're in. How can you be worried? 

We're in need of some specific improvement to make those couple of last steps which means losing a few along the way. 

No biggie if we want that flag.

Half speculative, half rubbish.

Pedo retired, timing was right, gave us nothing when he came to the senior side. Loved Pedo at the club but it was time.

Vince retired, also right timing, can't have Vince and Lewis in the same side. Those goals he missed in the VFL grand final were a sign. He would have nailed them under a heap of pressure in his prime. Also loved Vince at the club!

Balic retired. Should Mahoney sit him down and say "no son, you have to play"

Kent trade, huge gamble offering him a 3 year deal with his injuries, we don't want to be the barstard club that tries to make him stay on a 1 year deal. Do the best for your family Kenty! He kicked a beauty against WC but it was a full team effort that won us that game, and if you want to highlight 1 player from that win it was Melksham.

Tyson speculative, we don't know any specific's yet.

Hogan also speculative, we don't know if the club hasn't offered him 2, 4, and 6 year deals and said weigh that up with your offer from freo and give us an answer before trade period. Which is the club doing what best for Melbourne in my opinion.

King and Flipper couldn't get a game in the VFL and we are bringing in Preuss. That's a win

Bugg, it was time to go.

Mckenna, we may never know. But everything else is spot on.

At this stage I'm calling TOP job FD. Then let's wait and see how things pan out.

Not against it either. We have a strong young talent base - much of it 23 and under. So, whereas most premiership windows may typically last 3 to 5 years, ours could remain open for 6 to 8 years. Therefore any really high-quality draftee could meaningfully contribute (after 1-2 years development) for the bulk of this window. However if the trade-week machinations meant we could get Josh Kelly, then grab him!

Apart from Hogan I don’t see any of the players you mentioned as a huge loss. Pedersen was pretty awful in every game he played this year and I wouldn’t expect improvement in 2019 at age 31-32. T Smith can cover Pedo easily. Vince was similarly finished this year and lost his place in the team because we couldn’t carry both he and Lewis. I liked the physicality that vandenBerg brought late in the season but he can butcher it and with any form drop off he could easily be playing VFL (he’s in the bottom 6 or so players in the team). Tyson got pushed out of his natural inside role because we have players with more tricks and versatility. I like Kent but he is made of sticky tape and the fact he is so inconsistent is another reason he couldn’t find a regular spot in the 22.

TL:DR - I’d like to keep Hogan but we will be compensated. Pedo and Vince were past it at AFL level. vandenBerg, Tyson and Kent will likely leave for personal reasons or opportunities we can not afford them.

As nice as it would be to have a VFL team full of AFL standard players. Players won’t stay if they can get an AFL gig elsewhere. I’ll back Taylor, Mahoney and co to get us the best net outcome. 

I also like the fact that we’re not satisfied with finishing fourth in an even year and seem willing to turnover the list to maximise our window.

GWS won't give up Kelly on top of Shiel and possibly Scully in the same year.

They'd want Oliver and Petracca as starting point in return.

Wouldn't be surprised if Brayshaw doesn't want to even play at freo anymore, and something difficult is going down.

Eg: WC win the Flag and someone walks on possible 1.1 per annum, and it's all happy and gay in a 40 million dollar club up the road and because they are all in the same town life goes on as if nothing has happened.

So this is what will have to happen:

Hogan requests trade (fait accompli)

 

Freo trades Neale (likely done) for BL pick 4 (soon to be 5 because of T Lynch compo) + something else

 

Port gets North’s first rounder (likely pick 11) this year for Polec (????)

 

Freo negotiates one of picks 5 or 6 plus whatever else is required for both of Ports 10 & 11, or alternatively both of Adelaide’s first rounders (????)

 

Melbourne agrees to trade Hogan for 5 or 6 + whatever else Freo is willing to offer. (????)

 

GC17 agrees to trade May for pick 5 or 6 rather than potentially getting band 1 FA compo in 2019 (????)

 

Simply put, Hogan likely wants out and Freo likely want him but there are plenty of variables that could scupper this deal.

I appreciate that our time is now and we are doing all we can to have a tilt, but my concern is more about what is being brought in. What is out there that we are having a crack at? If you are improving your list, you can’t simply move players on and replace them with players of lesser quality. I don’t know that that will happen, but I don’t know that it won’t. We need players that improve our deficiency. Leg speed is one of those major deficiencies. If KK is the answer to that, then fantastic. He has played very little footy in recent times though.inwould have thought we would have been after a quality established mid, and maybe we still are, but it looks like other clubs are ahead of us. I will be happy to be proven wrong and see us land a big fish. I admit that the recruiting in recent years has been very good.
