Was just thinking, if we could get 4/5 from Freo for Jesse and could get GC to accept our first pick in 2019 plus a player or another pick thrown in, we could have 2 early picks to use in this draft,

GC has a swag of early picks in this draft I think it is 7 in top 40 and therefore may be happy to spread it a bit and take another first rounder next year to avoid a glut of 18 year olds this year being added to the list.

If we could swing that sort of deal and if say GC took the King twins, who would solve FF and FB soon, as replacements for Lynch and May, options would open. The Kings are 202 cms and strong so could possibly play next year. They have said they are happier to go interstate if picked together.

If that happened, we would have a Jesse replacement in Lukosius and could take Rozee his mate, or Rankine also from SA.

It is just another scenario that could develop. If GC took the SA boys we would have the Kings and would only need to draft or trade for mids, this year and next.

We could even keep 5 and trade 4 to Port for 9 and 10 or do a deal with the Crows for a player and their first pick. We could have 3 picks in the top 10 or 2 in the top 12 and a player.  The options really open up.

Just a thought.

I just can't see us going to the draft with the first rounders. Unless the guy(s) that we want knock(s) back the offer or their club does.

Red...I like the banter with your good self on these matters...as to menus...well......lol ;).. I digress.

I see GC as the litmus in a fashion for all of this. GC is a bit of a mess currently...but Dew is no mug. He's needing to rebuild...and on the run. I see him as quite pragmatic. If he holds any sway over their FD  some sanity might prevail next week. I fear far too many people are viewing this ( the Hogan extravaganza ) in too much isolation.  I would agree if we can help facilitate ( in a fashion ) a viable remedy for some of the SUns worries then they ought to be a little kind in return.

Maybe unlike some...id be happy to see most of our desired deals through.. If all...well yahoo and crack the champers.

If that plays out, you take Rankine and run. The guy would walk into our best 22, he's the most AFL ready player in this draft.

I'm only speculating by piecing things together that I've read on here, but given we've allegedly asked whether we can trade our 2019 first rounder, it would make sense that we packaged that with one of the Hogan picks not going to GCS.

I'd hope we could do an exchange of later picks with the other first rounder for May AND KK.

From there, I hope we are thinking of putting the remaining pick and next year's in front of GWS and saying to Kelly 'come and play in a flag tilt with us next year - you can play on the MCG every week, in front of a Melbourne revival that saw 1,000,000 fans watch our games this year'.

We can now argue to prospective players that we can pack the MCG out, we play in big games (QBD, ANZAC Eve and hopefully finals) and this list is ready to properly challenge for a flag.

There's a chance we'd be able to lure any A grader in the league after our season (so anyone like Kelly, Whitfield etc). We have a legitimate shot at winning it next year if we get our defence sorted and add some more class to our midfield.

5) We try to bluff Freo with demanding 2 x early first rd picks, only to realise that Hogan will leave for a pick around 18 next year, so we bite the bullet, trade him for something less than 4/5, and play in a Grand Final with Steven May at full back.

The idea of Hogan for May stinks to high heaven, but with the hand we have, it will only take Hogan to really warm to Freo, and we will be forced to take the single early pick. As much as I hate the idea, if it gets done, we are 1 large step closer to a flag.

Heres hoping we get more than pick 4, as we should.

How would he leave for pick 18 next year? He's not a FA.

We won't get these 2 picks

If Jesse publicly states he wants to leave, then his value is diminished - we won't make him stay for 2019, imagine the impact the press coverage would have particularly if he has a few bad games

I think we'd get 5 + a player at best

Why would he publicly state anything?

id guess at May and Kolodjashnij for Hogan is being floated. I'd still want more, but thats just me. KPF are harder to find than other players. Although on the opposite if freo wait one year and hogan leaves for restricted free agency we'd get crap all (so hoping we play hard ball.

But we can choose to match the RFA package if we wish.

Assuming Neale leaves and it sounds like he wants to, then picks 4/5 is what Hogan is worth this year.   If not we hold him and see what they come up with.

FFS Hogan is NOT a Free Agent next year, Restricted or otherwise.

Jesse needs to make a decision. His heart obviously isn’t in it otherwise he wouldn’t have asked Goodwin about going to Perth. The longer this drags out, the less time we have to spend our compensation.

Beating around the bush isn’t going to do anyone any favours Jesse

The bolded with the second clause is somewhat ambiguous, no?

If we weren't to use our first-rounder in the draft this year and next, then we face trading restrictions?

Is it designed to give clubs the chance to trade back in on the final year of their requirements? E.g. - we trade out this year, and then can trade back in next?

The restriction is only on trading FUTURE first round picks. There's nothing to say you can't yrade your first round pick every year but if you haven't used 2 in a 4 year period you won't be allowed to trade any FUTURE first round picks.

Of course this all comes with a massive asterisk that states the AFL will consider this on a case by case basis (or if you ask nicely we'll let you do it anyway).

Sorry, I actually mean he goes into the draft. I expect Freo to be near the bottom again.

Then we take what Freo offers, or lose him for nothing.

Very very unlikely but possible.

We should be doing something now if we think losing him can give us the Flag pieces that we need. He gives us the currency we need.

If all they offer us this year is a one first round pick then we hold on to him. They'll offer the same next year and will have a top 5 pick again so we won't be any worse off.

I'm not that confident that we will hold off and push it to the brink for those 2 early picks. I just cant see us getting 4 & 5

4 and a pick after 10 maybe is what I see us accepting, and if it goes to the final couple of trading hours, we may take pick 4 on its own.

I have a hunch that our guys view Jesse (leaving) now as the key to a serious flag hit next year. I reckon we REALLY badly want May, and cant take the chance of Colonwood swooping.

I hope you are right, as @Redleg trade scenario would be an absolute dream come true. But if it appears too good to be true, it usually is.

well said... had come to the same conclusion

Freo won't be bottom next year nor will they rocket up the ladder so a very fair chance pick 4/5 next year is still there.

bTW on your Kelly trade... the problem I see is that pick 5/6 plus our first for next year (say 15 plus) sounds light for Kelly etc.

Like the thinking though

For me it’s simple 2 top 10 draft picks or we keep Jessie. Have a crack for a flag with him next year and if he still wants to go we get a first round pick next year. If that’s all Freo are will to cough up this year then it will be no big loss.

That's all well and good but that means you are happy with May not joining the club and Oscar mcdonald tearing your hair out for another season.

Another option would be they trade us pick 4 or 5 plus their first pick next year. We could then use that as currency for a player or trade it to another club this year for their first (as a lot of people will be banking on Freo having another high pick next year).

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
