Carlton will tank today and be 2 games clear to get pick 1 in the draft.

Years after we got raked over the coals for alleged tanking and they weren't even looked at despite  obvious tanking , they continue to do the same thing.

They are still thought of as an asset to AFL House. Through the 1960’s to the 90’s Carlscum made a lot of ? money for themselves and i daresay some made it into AFL hands

it stinks, but Premiership Cups make money

Carlscum have 16 and most of those are in the modern era

Ours are not

Kade Simpson is already a late withdrawal.  They're not even trying to hide it.

True but there last flag was in 1995 and even Melbourne have made a Grand Final more recently than them.

They've been the worst club this century, despite how shocking we were for a decade.

LOL I knew it.

I looked at the ladder and saw theyd be two games clear and would not want to win. And now Simpson withdraws

Amazing.  They will never change.

Only you could turn something about Carlton going the tank for the first pick in the draft to knocking how many flags we haven't won in the modern era.  You truly are the king of turning any topic into something you can rubbish the club about.  Well done.

I know. But members of those winning sides still hold Power within AFL Ranks

Fitzpatrick only just stepped down.

I am just comparing the influence of modern flags to old flags in the eyes of the AFL and TV Execs.

Please try and understand this. It’s one of our main problems. Our history is old, it’s why we play in Darwin on Foxtel and Carlscum get games on the ‘G

You do realise it is 2018 don't you?

The modern era? The last time the blues won a flag was nearly a quarter of a century ago.

By the by do you still believe that Channel 7 have used their 'influence' to get Blues plum free to air games this year.

Because, you know the blues are so successful and all in the modern era that its total winner for a free to air broadcaster to have lots of their games on the tele.

Yes Carlton are still one of Ch 7’s preferred clubs. Tht is exactly why they get so much airtime. It is insane, i agree. But it is happening. I am not making the decisions, but i have seen some of the documentation earlier this year

And as for the ratings drop (14%) ... it's the millennials that should be concerning the AFL.  The oldies will stick pat as they are rusted on.  Millennials have a much broader range of interests in numerous other sports and aren't necessarily as rusted on.   AFLX anyone?

AFL needs to be bullet-proof and needs to be the first choice of sports ... the sport isn't big enough to thrive & survive without a very large proportion of neutrals.

Agree that the AFL needs to be concerned with millennials and its younger fans in general, but not necessarily to the exclusion of all other demographics. I'm seeing equal proportions of older fans disengaging from the sport due to it not representing what they remember the sport looking like in the 70s, 80s and/or 90s. In fact, being a millennial myself, I have no problem with the state of the game currently and, moreover, I'm confident that the sport will right some of the less appealing modern traits (congestion, scrums) without the need for rule changes.

As to the neutrals point, agree. But how does that tie into ratings? Neutrals are likely to only watch prime time games. The current trend in scheduling prime time games is to favour certain clubs over others and to preference big clubs over ideal match ups.

We've had too many flops on Friday nights this year and so many of them were avoidable. We shouldn't be seeing Carlton or St Kilda next year and we should instead see more of us (provided we don't continue to fall into a giant hole), Port Adelaide, North Melbourne, GWS, Collingwood (yes, Collingwood) and other sides who showed in 2018 that they are capable of playing watchable football and winning games.

The prime time games need to be the best match-ups so as to maximise the potential audience ... some flexibility might be required but the bias towards the better supported teams is probably always going to exist in some form.  And if those better supported teams don't perform well then people will switch off ... or,  not switch on at all.

The increase in rotations has effectively been a major rule change if you think about it ... I'm a progressive thinker and will more often than not embrace change as long as those changes are beneficial.  Copious quantities of rotations doesn't necessarily add anything to the sport - and that opinion is shared by many that I converse with (of any demographic)

Against that,  there are just as many who either don't particularly care or don't have an issue with the number of rotations.  So those people aren't the problem.  It's those who are switching off that is the problem.

I must say that I was shocked at the percentage drop with the ratings though - 14%.  If you imagine yourself as the AFL CEO you'd be somewhat alarmed at that number.

Tyson is the one I'd be trading. Can really only play on the inside. At least Gus can play in and out. Only problem is, Dom would have less currency.

If it wasn’t so concerning, it would be funny.

Carlton want our MCG games, they have been targetting the ‘G for about 5 years.

Greg Swan when CEO of Carlscum was quite public about it, and why he vehemently opposed any draft concessions during our darkest years.

To many, we are an irrelevant obstacle, because we have failed like clockwork for so long.

But many on here will disagree...

Can Carlton just not be shown on any tv, including Foxtel, for the next 2 years? They are just so bad.

Absolutely. But i bet they still get more Prime Time than we do, even when the TANK IS WELL AND TRULY ON...

TBH, I don't care that Carlton tank.  Lions are getting experience into their very talented list and practicing/fine tuning their game plan.  Lions will be the winners in more ways than on the scoreboard.

Look on the bright side - if Carlton keep tanking/chasing draft picks they will be anchored to the bottom of the ladder for the next 10 years! :D .  Let them tank I say!

Fine them and ridicule them

we all Remember what Tony Liberatore said

TBH, I get more pleasure seeing them at the bottom of the ladder than any amount of $$$ fine the AFL could dispense.

All I care about is Demon success.  I'm over everyone else.

Edit:  I just saw the score in the 4th - Lions 17.12.114.  Blues 6.10.46.  Blues aren't tanking they are simply rubbish!!

They can stay at the bottom. But kick them and cause them immense pain at the same time

Wilson loves these scenarios, but will she rip into a Victorian “Big 4”

Richmond are scarily awesome. How can a side rise from absolute shite to this good so quickly? Same coach - I can't bear his smugness these days, much preferred his grumpy thuggish side because at least he was true to himself. And, more or less, the same team. They simply play amazing football.

PS: No, I'll never forgive what Hardwick and Wallis did to 19 year old Green in the 200 Grand Final.

Wish I had been to that 200 Grand Final. Those were the days !! They knew how to play footy back then. It was more of a Greco-Roman style, free flowing entertaining.

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
