We play our best footy when we’re predictable, not always bombing it to McDonald and our goal kickers are spread amongst the team.

I don’t give two [censored] if players haven’t earn a spot for a recall, right now we need to pick our best 22 based on what will win us games. We have zero speed and zero spread. Some people on here have absolutely no clue that teams are catching on what we are doing, play an extra back and spread run and carry. We can’t keep up and teams are playing transition footy way too easily. We have been one of the easiest clubs to score against.

Last week I was calling for Garlett and Spargo to play together as we had no small forwards, ahead of Hannan and I got called out for it. Now this week everyone is on the same page. Funny that.

I think Keilty deserves a go if we need to go tall again. From reports he's been pretty good all year and he was super steady in the game on the weekend. He was marking with ease and played with real confidence knowing when to compete in the air.

I think the Lever injury has greatly upset the balance of our backline overall and its showing not only in unconfident team selection and on field we look far less organised.

Generally, reasonable posters may not be inclined to offer mass changes in the weekly thread, and it always gets a tad confused between prediction and desire. But what do people think is our best team heading into the back half of the year?

I think the Manangatang 3rds (except their ruckman and FF) might be helpful in filling some key spots

I hear they're fast and the only thing they fear is an empty Lake Boga pie warmer and empty Melbourne (makes me) Bitter keg.

Sure, I understand that Lever going went really screwed us, but Frost and even a mature age recruit like Keiltey surely should have got a go first.

There was no rush with Petty, whereas now is the time to put Frost under pressure in the role we recruited him for and see how he copes. I know he is NQR, but we need to find that out for sure so we can decide whether he should stay or go. Playing Petty doesn't tell us anything about him, other than he isn't ready to play a key position defensive role in the AFL, and nor should he be. He is 18 for goodness sake. Being a key defender is one of the hardest roles in footy. 

Omac came in and played with Garland and TMac, Tmac had Frawley and Dunn etc etc. Poor Petty had nobody there to support him. It left him vulnerable, it left Omac vulnerable, and the whole thing was a shambles. I would have almost forgiven the decision, had Goodwin thrown TMac back in the last 15 minutes to help weather the storm, as we were making our comeback (after we kicked 2 in a row). Instead Petty was left one out, got outmarked, and the game was basically gone.

So when do we find out if Frost needs to stay or go? Why do we keep players on our list, if when all other options are gone, we don't play them? If Frost was stinking it up in the VFL I would almost agree, but he has been playing well and knocking the door down. He really stood out in the game I saw on Saturday, which was a high pressure tight contest against a quality VFL side.

Don't get me wrong, he makes me cringe as much as anyone, but this is season on the line stuff. We don't win this game and we can kiss finals goodbye. Now is not the time to give a kid who isn't ready, playing in a vitally important position, another go to make sure his confidence isn't shattered. The coaches need to do that off the field, and take responsibility for it.

If they're not going to use Tyson as an inside mid there's no point playing him.  I have doubts on Stretch, but he's been playing well and might now make a better fist of AFL level footy.

Petty isn't ready.  At 23 years of age and with our defensive issues if they don't give Keilty a go now they never will.  He's strong, calm and a great mark.  I suspect he hasn't been seen as an intercept defender and more suited to Oscar's role, which is why he's been overlooked, but right now he's a better option than Petty.  Let's see what he's got.

Spargo will make us a better team.  We've missed his run and footy smarts.

But in my view, this hasn't been a personnel issue, it's been more a system issue.  We aren't not defending well enough through the middle of the ground, which then exposes individuals, as well as other parts of the ground.

That said, I reckon these changes make us better.  For now anyway.

Understand your thinking but Petty was completely lost and looks a  long way off playing senior footy. 

Was really looking forward to seeing this kid but it was one of the most embarrassing debuts I have ever witnessed. I am all for giving kids a proper go but we just cant afford to leak goals like we did on Sunday as each time the ball was directed in the Petty direction he did not know what to do or got stage fright and fumbled, partly due to his slow decision making. He was beaten virtually every time whether in the air or on the ground. It got to the stage where I sensed that his own team mates did not want to hand pass or kick to him.

We simply cannot afford to carry him in another match this season. Particularly, alongside OMcD. 

Having said that, one does feel that whatever the selection, its a bit like plugging holes in the Titanic.

Frost and Keilty were both rock solid for Casey on the weekend against a strong Essendon side. I think Frost for Petty (even if it means he only has the single week).

I would also bring in Garlett/Spargo (for either Hannan/Tyson)!

We simply cannot afford to carry him in another match this season. He was Oscar McDonald like but worse.

Agree, with some obvious exceptions, but with Harry it was like a soccer or rugby match being one down.  

Frost comes in for Petty who is not ready and should have never been selected this year. We desperately need some speed to go with OMac, Jetta, Salem and Lewis in the backline.

Tyson needs to go out for one of Stretch (probably), Vince or Baker. We need someone on the wing who can run and kick.

Weideman and Hannan out for Spargo and Garlett. Hannan based on poor form and Weideman based on structure. We only should be playing two key forwards. The weather in Darwin won't help him either. TMac/Harmes can be second ruck.

I would also consider dropping Lewis for Vince. Vince is better defensively and Lewis looks (more) cooked. I feel Wagner may be a better option than both, but he was sick last week and didn't play in the VFL.

I think the reason we went with Petty was because:

1. - He had been in pretty good form for most of the season.  I think eyebrows would have been raised had he come in on the back of no form whatsoever (reminiscent of Isaac Weetra in Bailey's first season) but this has been building for a while.  Those same people who turned on him in the 'worst selection' thread would have been the same ones suggesting his inclusion in the side in last weeks iteration of this thread.  So it wasn't as if he didn't have form.

2. - It's easier to add a similar player to the side than to change the make up and strategy of the back line as a whole.  The game plan we have was based around Jake Lever and the way he plays.  Losing him meant we had two options, and we have gone down the road of trying to add players to our back half that will fill the hole left by Lever.  Obviously the FD believed that Petty (and, to an extent, Joel Smith) were the players who could play the role designated for them better than Frost or Keilty.  We know what we get with Frost and, for most of the year, he hasn't gotten a look in because he simply can't be trusted to do the basics right.  Petty was played because his game if closest to that of Lever (in my opinion).

Obviously it didn't work against the Saints, although the ease with which the Saints ran the ball forward made his job, and the job of all our backmen, supremely difficult.  I'd like to think the club will back him in to improve and to build that confidence back again this week, but would totally understand if they let him do that at Casey and brought in someone like Frost or Keilty to replace him.

I think its incredibly difficult for a 19yr old to come in as a key backman lining up against oppositions key forwards. It's a lot easier for young midfielders or non key position players who can get their hand on the football or tackle more due to being around stoppages and more contests overall (ie.Spargo). 

It's hard to understand that he was filling Lever's role as he was pretty much in a one on one contest the whole game. Poor kid was in really venerable positions all afternoon due to St Kilda's run and carry through the corridor opening up the game.

Won't be a surprise to see tall defender Declan Keilty get a debut for Melbourne this week. Was best in the VFL on Sat and has had a good year. And he'd be the third player drafted from Casey to take an AFL bow this year (after Bayley Fritsch and Oscar McInerney).

I agree with your first sentence but, again, we didn't seem too worried when most were asking for his inclusion this weekend.  It's a tough gig to do but they believed he could do it.

Our defensive pressure up the ground hurt our ability to support both Petty and Oscar in the contest as we didn't have time to settle.  They just ran the ball down with ease and we could do little about it.

AgreedI personally was worried about adding him but obviously the FD were confident in him so there you go.. I'm split on whether to play Harry again. I guess it will depend on matchups. I don't mind the idea of backing him in and putting last weeks game behind him but also happy to give Keilty a go who has been super solid.

Anyone know where Josh Wagner is up to? I thought he was decent for the first few games of the year and seemed to be edged out due to midfielders and forwards coming in/shifting things around. He competes well in the air for his size and give you another good user of the ball in the back half when he plays with confidence.

Pedersen has spent the last two weeks as a defender at Casey. I’m not suggesting we should bring him in to replace Petty, more curious to see what other people think. He would add experience to an extent, although I don’t think he’s played back all that often in the past. 

We have Frost and judging by some posts people will have hearts in mouth when he’s near the ball.

Keilty is another option but god help him if the ball is allowed to come in like yesterday.

I don't think Pederson has had enough time down back to prove himself. I think he would go OK if he were to play on a lead up player who spends more time as a high forward. But he just didn't show much on the weekend for Casey. A work in Progress. Nice to have the luxury of trying him down back with us having a couple of developing forwards to choose from in Weids and T. Smith

I liked Keilty's game on the weekend thought he was really steady and took marks playing with confidence overall. But I imagine Petty has been doing the same and unless our midfield put more pressure on the opposition then both are going to be very vulnerable when the ball enters the backline.
