Agreed.

I don’t mins the idea of Frost on Dixon due to Frosts strength in one on ones. Dixon isn’t really jack flash either so Frosty could expose him better that Omac.

Frost is not good one on one...he hasn't got the smarts to use his strength. He gets his positioning all a... up.

...and I think Dixon is a bit of a sheep in wolves clothing.

IN: Tyson, Frost, Garlett

OUT: Vince, Spargo, Pedersen

Have loved Spargo’s work, but the bigger bodied Collingwood brushed him aside.

Want to see Frost as the second tall against a tall Port Adelaide forward line and Smith play his more suited third tall role.

Tyson is a very good player and has found some form.  Must play against a strong Port Midfield.

While these changes look good on paper (so to speak) who helps out Gawn? I assume from what you've said that Frost replaces Vince and Garlett replaces Spargo. Tyson therefore is the "replacement" for Pedersen, but obviously not as the second ruckman.

My line up would be.

Dixon on O.Mac

Westoff\Ryder on Petty

Marshall on Joel.Smith

Now I am worried about your football smarts.

I'm worried about this game. Port have their tails up and if we are a couple of % off after the bye we'll get done in hostile territory

The only thing that Port can do generally is to 'long bomb' to such talls in the forward line and to counter that, we really need to concentrate on spoilers working in together. Omac on Dixon and Frost's good reach, height and strength up there too, with of course, Jetta and Hibberd and perhaps a younger player such as Petty with the groundwork. If we do not play Vince or Lewis, it is a chance for the likes of Baker with speed and ball-handling, and Joel the Smith, as well to pinch hit opportunities. Frosty may be rotated into the ruck, as might TMac merely as blocking ruckmen to counter the opposition ruckmen when Gawn is rested up forward. Just an idea. The dependence on rucking is important, but it is not all that clearances are made from - preventing effective opposition rucking is just as important to enable clearance players to activate. Tyson is good in this regard, and needs to dispose at an improved level.

I've changed my mind re: changes this week.

I think we need a couple more talls to come in this week. Smith wasn't bad, but we desperately need some more height in our backline. Oscar could be rag-dolled by Dixon if Port get easy ball.

Pederson just doesn't do enough for me. Sure he can take a clunk, but everything else he does is so average. Doesn't provide pressure, doesn't use the ball smartly and just doesn't have footy smarts.

I'd like one of Smith or Weideman in. I'd like to try Petty as another tall defender and I want Garlett to come in to our side with a really defined role.

Ins: Petty, Smith and Garlett

Outs: Vince, Pederson, Harmes

I thought Harmes was very very poor in a few key areas against Collingwood. It would allow for Tom Mac to play more on the wing and become a threat. I think we could worry them with our height.

But again, it'll all come down to who gets on top in the midfield. We need to come out breathing fire.

It will be wet weather in the second half. Garlett may not be at his best as a result. For similar pace, ball handling and kicking skills including sudden snaps, Hannan could be a better choice in that crumbing role. He does find space and he does run on to assist with offensive scores and second efforts.

Season defining game!  They have Wines, Polec and Gray.  Our best game must be brought to beat them.  Bring in Tyson as he must perform or be traded.  Speed is our problem.

Tyson is not going to help with speed

when will teams be announced

Watching Hinkley on OTC last night made me super, super worried about this game

He is so focussed on Friday night, he will have the team breathing fire

If (Captain Obvious here) we don't get an early clearance, crunch a big tackle, kick a couple in row, we'll be sunk

Well at least we will see whether this team has improved and where it's going, if we cant handle the heat against top 8 sides this year we don't deserve to make it, a real test especially for the leaders.

The fans deserve for the team to make finals. If they can't handle the heat against top 8 sides that is a blight on our application and mental steel rather than talent

I hope Goodwin/FD and players took note

As with the QBW weekend, I have a terrible feeling we are going to get smoked on this

Good Tyson delivery will help with speed once his 'possession game' swings into play. Hunt and Frost will add a dimension, as will Hannan, dry weather only Garlett, Spargo coz he's a go-er and Jones, of course in bursts. ANB is not too slow, either. The elimination of Lewis, Vince will also provide run without overlong possession so maybe, the Ginger Ninja (Baker) - a noted speedster - could contribute in this regard in bursts from the bench.

Hunt has done his ankle in the VFL and is out for around a month. I like the ginger ninja but I'm not sure he's ready yet...

Thanks, big oversight on my behalf, I had heard this days ago and the memory was not one well retained.

Struggling - really needs to go hard this week

Carrying an injury I suspect, had scans before QB game if the rumour was true.

I have been reading that Dion Johnston has been playing well off half back for Casey.  Could he come in for Vince?

I know you're not a Frost fan rjay but I think he'd provide a better matchup for Dixon.

I guess if it actually happens only then can we debate it objectively.

Agreed, since the Hawthorn game (except for the Adelaide game) our first quarters have been deeplorable.

OMac is there to play on the big guys, he has showed this with his performances on Hawkins, Brown etc.   He had an off day against the Pies but the pressure up the field didn’t help him.  Frost isn’t needed

Collinwood had Cox.

Port have Dixon, Westoff, Ryder, Marshall.

Don't play Frost it will be a step backwards like playing Pedersen last game. Play Petty for height or Baker for speed. How many chances does Frost need to prove that he is unworthy?

He is our 2nd best intercept player just behind Lever W.  I agree though, it's what he does or doesn't do after he gets it that's a worry.

Assuming he is coachable then surely the line coaches would be drilling him to handball behind or sideways whenever possible to the likes of Nev, Hibb and Vince to reduce likely turnovers and increase efficiency going through the middle & forward off HB?

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
