Agreed.  Does absolutely nothing else but play the seagull role and jag a few goals.  We made him look like a superstar.

It's pressure. Our biggest issue is that, when we have these 30+ point quarter losses, we're not applying pressure on our opponent. It's almost inherent - a side under proper pressure might win a quarter, but they're not going to win it by 30+ points.

Spot on. We weren't laying bloody tackles inside 50 or even through the midfield for large portions of the second. But in reality, they waltzed out of our defence for most of the day. Those two cheap kicks we would give up nearly every time became like clockwork. Infuriating. I couldn't believe it wasn't addressed with our structures, but this revealed something to me about our plan A and plan B.  

One of these plans is for the lesser teams and another is for the stronger teams. We view Geelong highly and as a stronger team, so on Sunday we clearly wanted to play a slightly deeper and less aggressive press (even with a deeper anchor in Lewis), which meant that we allowed that first uncontested possession from the goal square.

I suspect our aggressive, extremely high press (MFC circa 2017) may have been highlighted at the end of last season as a goal leaker and so instead of using this every time, we'll use it to strangle lesser teams, but play a more conservative press against stronger teams. This is a good move if true.  

Therefore, I wouldn't be surprised to see a more aggressive press against Brisbane, who may not have the skill to get out of our press. Think the first quarter against Richmond last year, where the ball pretty much stayed in our forward half and they could rarely unpick it. Our structures were terrific that night and we deserved the win (and would have if it weren't for injury).

Having watched a bit of Brisbane during the JLT, their brunt at the coal face is decent, but their skills don't match ours. If I was Goodwin, I'd be setting our team up to play the aggressive press and then tinker, depending on how well Brisbane can unpick our press.

Yep, I said the same thing to my old man on Sunday. His one good game for the season. And dadsy said at least he's doing it. Unfortunately, none of our smalls had anything like his impact. Still, he's a muppet.

When is someone from Our Club going to have a sober conversation with the AFL and their Umpiring Fraternity about "different interpretations at different times" of The Game Rules for one Club and possibly the rest of the competition.

Is it costing us games........yes

Is it clearly bias...................yes

Have other Clubs done it....yes, and it helped

Have The Media noticed it..yes. I could go on about Sunday for instance, however i would prefer to bring this up now, rather than later, when we have lost games more important down the season.

Two years ago maybe more there was a lone voice or two spewing about decisions?maggots? now it is almost a chorus. I suppose we cannot be all blind now........

I know a few people have commented on it and wondered why (Including Taylor in commentary). I just had a look at the last few minutes to refresh my mind on what happened and as Oliver marks the ball an umpire calls play on (he did call it from the previous play but called again as it hit Claytons hands)and just as he does the whistle blows.

Not sure if the same umpire that called play on also blew the whistle.

Interested if anyone else hears the same thing and what their take on it was.

 

I thought it was touched at the ground but I didn't have a good view of it. Will be interested to watch the replay.

Having rewatched much of the game we didn't play anywhere near as bad as has been made out on here. Even the 2nd quarter wasn't that bad, the last 5-10 minutes were poor (especially allowing 2 goals in the last 90 or so seconds) but we were a tad unlucky as well with two shots from Garlett and Hunt hitting the post. 

We need to work on removing the high up and under kicks as well as letting the opposition take easy marks over the back of the pack in defense but when you combine some of our misses in the second half (Hannan, Harmes, Petracca, Gawn) with the posters above we really should've won the game. And Geelong didn't play too bad either, they hunted us around the packs well and ran forward which is something we need to be mindful of. As bad as our 2nd quarter (or really the second half of the second quarter) was our 3rd quarter was just as good, just need to really consolidate it on the scoreboard when we're dominating play.

Also I got in about half way through the first quarter so didn't realise just how immense Petracca was in the first. Oliver not too shabby either. When Viney comes back, look out

We did play badly in that we allowed Geelong to have 20 shots on goal from 24 entries and 80 points in the first half.

They were overun in the 2nd half because we tightened up and they were down on rotations.

Yes but while we were scoring as well it wasn't a big deal. We were unlucky with a couple of posters and then conceded two goals in the last 2 minutes of the half. Otherwise we didn't play terribly. We didn't play perfectly but it certainly wasn't bad.

We need to work on our F50 entries, our ability to retain the ball inside 50 once it comes in, make sure our opponents don't take easy marks out the back within 10m of goal and don't allow them to stream forward in numbers. All that points to tightening up a bit and lowering our eyes going inside 50 (also being prepared to handball more to a player in better position rather than going with a kick as the first option). 

The way people have been melting down on here you'd think it was round 1 2013 we saw out there.

I agree to an extent but you will never win shoot-out football consistently. Its a little like Dean Bailey in 2010.

The good teams simply don't allow teams to get a run on and dominate quarters of football.

It will be interesting to see whether we learned something at HT last week and us holding them to 17 points in the second half was because we changed things, or simply because Geelong tired out with one down on the bench.

If we lose a quarter to Brisbane by 30 points, I'll go ballistic.
