We have our own homegrown to look after now. Clubs will be knocking on Oliver's door, Petracca and others, lets keep this list together as long as it takes to get the elusive flag.

To me a player like Sloane would end up around our 3rd or 4th mid behind Oliver & Patracca and on par with Viney but we would be paying him number 1 mid money. Not a wise spend...

Look at needs and spend wisely...Hibberd is an example. Although not a free agent he fitted a real need to have quality run and disposal from defence.

Gaff maybe the one to look at but that depends on money and how some of our younger players co

 

Whether we're past going for a big fish depends on how well we do this year. Tyson, Brayshaw, Salem etc. Plenty of players could be on the chopping block to make cap space for our homegrown & a big fish if available, if we are still around the 7-10 mark and have a weak final (if we make finals) - Optimistic we'll exceed 7th and will not need to chase Sloane. Luke Dalhouse is a free agent this year, perhaps we'll be more in need of the cream on top of the cake type player.

We passed on Rory in the draft after telling him he wasn our radar.Apparently he wasn't pleased at the time.

Dont see us going for him and we also have several of our own we need to keep. 

Lynch would be great but it won't happen. 

I think we will concentrate on keeping our better young players and add through the draft and maybe a smart trade like with Hibberd.

That 2008 draft was a disaster for us.

Sloane was a lock at pick 35, and then at the last minute we picked Bennell instead.

Shuey was apparently (almost) a lock at pick 17, and then at the last minute we picked Blease instead.

Pick 19 on James Strauss - well, this was just bizarre given that 10 or so of the next dozen or so picks were seen to be well ahead of him and virtually all of them turned out to be very good players.

That draft really hindered our progress at a critical time for the club.

Lucky we have Jason Taylor and Todd Viney these days.

 

Was listening to the Hard Ball Gets podcast with Xavier Ellis, who is a bit of a C*** towards the Dees. But none the less, he's still pretty knowledgeable on all clubs and players. They were doing a segment called Pretenders to Contenders and you had to make 1 big afl-shaking type of trade that could shift your clubs fortunes, going through each club that is a level/or a few below being in contention currently.

It was off the cuff and people would scoff at it, but he threw up Tom McDonald for Rory Sloane as an example. His reasoning was, even though our forward line is a mess, he did not rate our midfield very highly even at the beginning of the year and thinks we need an elite midfielder in there with Rory Sloane being a level above all of our current players, even at the age of 30. And Adelaide of course need a forward hence the trade. Tom Mac was just an example of the quality needed to get it done, but you could use picks instead to get a deal done. And it doesnt have to be Sloane. Could be any player of a high calibre. Eg The dogs did it with Tom Boyd, and trading their captain ryan griffen

Even with all of the issues over at Adelaide, i'd still doubt that a captain is gettable, but stranger things have happened even with captains.

So anyway. Maybe a discussion could be had on the topic of "Pretenders to Contenders" and MFC luring an elite midfielder (or forward/defender) out of left field to join us.

Exactly. It was disgraceful.  We had told Sloane he has in our top selections.  Stunned we missed him and went for Bennell.  Stunned then.  So gutted now.

How is that lucky? We have just been rated as 16th of 18 teams for talent under 23yo in an article in the AFL website. Even if you argue that writer is a bit off the mark our recruiting over the past five years has been shoddy at best.

On Sloane, good player but I’ve never rated him the superstar some have. Pretty sure he’s signed on at Crows ‘til 2022 anyway.

As I’ve written elsewhere, even if you disagree with the article there’s no way you can look at those club-by-club lists of U/23 players and have us anywhere near the top eight rated clubs. We’re in the bottom eight and that’s being generous, even subjectively.

Its an absolute indictment on our recruiting since 2013 when Taylor came on board. Changes must be made by Pert in that area as soon as possible and I expect they will be.

You do realize that Collingwood are rated worse than us on that list and are currently 6th on the ladder yes?

Under 23s shouldn't be the ones responsible for our success, it's not 2009 again is it?

We were 5th at the end of the home and away season. Finals are a separate competition which we won’t be in this year. At least compare apples with apples.
