Any questions Demonlanders want to ask?

There was talk about West Coast being into Fritch.

Were we always drafting him at 31 or was that to trump West Coast at 32?

I noticed the Eagles asked for extended time with pick 32.

Do the current TAC cup arrangements and rules enhance the selection of youngsters, or is it too open and free to make judgements which reflect the needs of AFL?

Is it easier for a recruiter to have top draft picks, or do you prefer the analysis required for those picks further down?.

Why do rucks take so long to develop? And what do you look for if selecting one of them?

Question:

Is “good as gold” his favourite saying?

Did the MFC take Fritsch at pick 31 so WCE couldn't get him at pick 32?

Edit: Oh Demon77 already asked this

  • Is there any player Jason was particularly disappointed another club ‘stole’ ahead of a planned pick?
  • Is there a smokey Jason is most proud of?
  • Which of the draftees does Jason think will be ready for an AFL game next year?
  • Are there any potential future father-son picks Jason is keeping an eye on?
  • Are there any prior year draftees Jason is bullish on making an impact in 2018?
  • Why was adding a ruckman not a priority for the club in the offseason? Do we think King/Filipovic would be ready in the event of a Gawn injury?
  • Should we expect Balic to be a regular in the AFL side?
  • Is Jason tracking other category B rookie possibilities given the recent Maynard and Smith successes?
  • How far ahead of time did Jason determine Oliver was out target for pick 4?

May ask a couple of these. Time permitting.

Would love to know the answer to this but we have limited time.

I think given the constant "we should've taken "X" player instead of "y" player", I'd like to know who has the biggest say in the recruitment of the players we take.  Is it the coach that goes to the recruiters and says "we need this type of player, find us the best one", or do the recruiters come back with a priority list and say "here's the best 5 players in the land, who do you like best?".

With all the hindsight recruiting that a lot of us do on here, I'd be interested to know the above.

And if you do ask it, please don't let him get away with the "best available" line.  There has to be more to it than that.  There has to be!

On a different note, would it be possible to do a ‘No T$ No B$’ version of the podcast? Where we can just fire random questions towards the hosts (within the bounds of good taste and common sense of course)?

This is a key question for me.  I know we have Pedo to help out but we don't have Watts to help as a 2nd ruck anymore......I assume we'd use TMac but am a little surprised we didn't get an experienced ruck to replace Spencer and back up Gawn.

question to ask: "With Simon Goodwin taking the helm, even though they had similar philosophies, did you tweak the focus on the types of players to recruit this year or even last year?"

"Some teams are looking at Richmond and Bulldogs' less reliance on pure rucks. As Max Gawn has a big advantage for tap work, does the recruitment look to develop another Max Gawn, or more of the Hybrid as the future primary ruck role? (Hoping of course that Max is fit and well for many years at Melbourne)"

Surprised so many are bothered by this. I doubt there was a player available better than what Pedersen and McDonald did and there's always Weideman who can be used alongside one of those 2 if needed.

Having a back up would take away from Mitch King's development time at Casey and he started coming on in the VFL last year. If he gets a solid preseason now he'll relish the playing time at VFL level. It would also all but rule Filipovic out as a viable AFL player because without the VFL reserves there's no where for him to play besides riding the pine at Casey and maybe getting a few minutes game time forward or in the ruck.

I like that we've backed a couple of young guys in and it might not take that long for them to become worthy back ups and if/when that happens we'll have a much stronger list than if we stunted their growth with a dud.

I'm the same. how many other clubs have 3 21yo and under developing ruckman on there list.

Yeah I want to know about Cat B rookies. 3 spots open. Surely we fill at least 1 of them.

Then a bit of talk about the 4 new recruits of course.

And if you could ask if the club have used analytics in recruiting.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
