I will add 3 to that number tomorrow. Just got back from Qld and I always like to renew face to face at the club office.

I realise that that is an old fashioned notion but I an old fashioned.

42186 now getting close to all time high

Yep, 48 to go!  Definitely countdown time!

At this time last year we had 40,549 members then added 1,684 in the following months to reach the 42,233 record by the end of July.

Can we add a similar amount in the next months to get to around 44,000?

Given how slow membership renewals were late last year, I reckon the club would be quite pleased with that.

Edit:  45 to go with @pineapple dee3 membership renewals tomorrow?

Given the side play  as they have in the last two or three weeks   The magic 45 might be close,

watch all the old supporters come out if we are 8 and 3   half way

15 to go!

Tomorrow will be the day to break the record.  More than two months ahead of last year...

Agreed. But if a team is inflating their numbers the sponsors will know about it. Plus they would also want to know average game attendance, average TV audience, number of full season members v a few games etc.

There would be a lot more to it than just the number a club promotes on its website.

Indeed. I fully expect that part of any major sponsorship package is access to the membership database. Whether it's email addresses or residential addresses, sponsors would see great value in direct marketing to members.

Do you reckon after knocking off Those Pies, we will get to 45,000?

will be tough but if we go into the bye at 9 and 3 i think it's doable

club needs to start a media campaign to get those extra memberships

A lot of these will be the three game memberships that give reseeved seat on QB.

Be interesting to see the conversion numbers over to full membership next year.

club site home page > membership banner > membership home page > there it is

ignore the counter on club site home page. it is not updated as regularly as the membership home page. why it isn't just linked programmatically i have no idea

Thats the glaring problem when you just focus on pure numbers. The only meaningful number from memberships should be - Net Profit.

What I've always wondered is ... How profitable are Armchair Memberships, 3 game MFC members and MCC Demons allocated members.

1) Not in the eyes of the AFL and Ch7:  membership/supporter numbers are the basis of their fixtures (despite their protestations to the contrary) for FTA premium time slots - Count the Thur, Fri and Sat night FTA slots for Ess, Coll, Rich, Carlt, Hawks even in their non-performing years.  Simply, Ch 7 want numbers to sell adv time to their sponsors.

Also, check out the venues those clubs play at - you rarely see them at low capacity grounds like Kardinia Park or Docklands when they play each other.  They play at our home ground while we have to sell games interstate or play at Docklands.

2) Not in the eyes of sponsors:  club sponsors want numbers to market their products to.   The more the merrier.  The profitability of the members is of little interest to them.  We make a lot more more money from sponsors than members so they are critical to our financial well being.  Again, look at the sponsorship revenue for the aforementioned clubs.  It is big because they have a lot of members!

3) Not in the eyes of clubs: once they have you as a member, even as an Armchair, or 3 gamer they can work to make you a full member and get your family on board.  (Without those membership options we may not have any country or interstate members).  Also, members buy merchandise, adding revenue to the club and revenue and advertising to our sponsors- anyone buy New Balance gear recently?

4) The more members we have the more people at games and so gate revenue goes up.

Looking at 'Net Profit' is a very limited view, especially as club costs are 'fixed' - effectively, any additional member is almost 100% profit (after allowing for making up and mailing membership packs).

The club would be ecstatic to break last years record so early and grow our membership by over 30% in 4 years.  We fans should share that excitement.  So, I don't see the point of introducing 'Net Profit' to this thread.  imv it simply isn't relevant to the thread nor to the value of increased membership numbers.  Enjoy the ride on and off the field!

all very good points lucy

total membership numbers and total membership revenue are both important to the financial success of the club

That's fantastic, should crack 45k or go very near now. That sets a great foundation to build off over the coming years should we get the onfield success we all hope for. If we can get up to 50k in the next year or two that puts us around the mark with Carlton, Geelong etc which is about right.

I don’t know how Richmond have so many members, I’d imagine a membership with your name on it would be hard to steal.

Win the next two and we’ll break 45k. #Youhearditherefirst.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
