Maynard and King ... signed up!

Recommended Posts

Corey Maynard has signed a two year contract extension and will be at the club until at least 2019. He will become a Category A rookie.

Mitch King will also remain a Demon, with the ruckman signing on until the end of 2018.

New deals for Maynard, King

Great news for mine.

Reckon we have a good one in Maynard.  Very excited to see what he does in 2018.

Just about a starter in Round 1.

Had no idea Maynard is so old (26), but he seems to be very highly rated in the club.

Glad to hear that Kind has been extended - hopefully he develops over the next couple of years as the cupboard is looking a little bit bare.

I'm glad there is some belief in king. If he has been extended then there is some belief he can make it.

For god sake put this news in the Trade and Draft thread.

Some real news to talk about.

Maynard is a hard bastrad. Our footy department have had enough of being pushed around.

I like it.

If he is already 26, our guys must have serious faith in his ability.

That's quite old for a rookie spot from outside the sport.

Would love to read a rundown from the coaching staff as to what his attributes are that demand another 2 years

Am I imagining things or did Maynard not get any votes in the B&F? I know he only played one game but would that mean that none of the coaches thought he played his role? Most of us on here thought it was a decent debut.

Actually agree !! He was ok.  Kicked a nice goal. Competed hard.  Showed he is worth another year to prove himself

Happy for Maynard, but would have thought they would have waited until the last list lodgment for King (or closer to). Who knows what the trade period may bring.

Might've been an oversight but he also got pretty badly torched by the Giants runners in transition on a dirty day for the team. I don't expect many votes were handed out for that game.

I thought he was encouraging but also a fair way off it and that he was a bad selection given the Giants outside runners.

Will be interesting to see if they try to develop Maynard as a forward next year. He has the size and a good competitive nature. Otherwise I see him a fair way back in the midfield mix given based on VFL form he needs to be in at the clearances to play his best.

If his fitness was good the other role I'd like to see him used in is as a tagger.

I think you answered your own question.

His rate of development last season was huge and if it continues, he could form a vital and much needed midfield grunt and depth.  With Bernie's days in the midfield pretty much over and my perception that Jones has past his peak in this area, my view is that we desperately need some more players to stand up and for fill those roles.  I think Jake Melksham plays the shutdown hard tag on gun oppo midfielders pretty well.  If Maynard can be as good an extractor as his VFL contested possessions and put that hard physical pressure on the opposition's mids, it would somewhat free up those with a bit more class and skill like Oliver, Salem and Brayshaw to play more of a role in moving and distibuting the ball out from the guts more effectively.

I'm also of the view that you can't have too many hard tough midfielders, like the Brisbane Lions of the early 2000s.  This guy certainly fits that mold.

I actually think that picking up Maynard and Joel Smith somewhat makes up for us trading away our high picks and this recruitment of young top end tallent from the draft over the last few years.

Some really screwd recruitment through alternate pathways.

I'm hoping they prove me wrong, but I don't think we picked up anyone of great potential from last year's draft other than Hannan.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
