On me? Its notย  - I don't feel passionate about the issue enough either way to care but many do.

interesting afl house is housed in etihad stadium named after an islamic theocracy owned airline. a state that bans homosexuality and has severe corporal punishments for it. if the afl was sincere (and we all know where there motives lie) they would find a new sponsor for the stadium and publicly condemn the uae for it's treatment of homosexuals.

and pigs might flyย

Be carefull dc do not hold your breath. Just the normal selective morality of the AFLย

About the SSM debate? I don't and you have totally missed the point.

You need to learn when you're losing and opt out.

Ha? ย What!? ย I can honestly tell you that I had no idea that you three intellectual giants had stumped me! ย

Clearly I wasย confused that someone who was on one hand complaining about forced education on social issues, then reveals he doesn't actually care at all. ย Secondary in my confusion, whenย faced with such breathtaking powers of logic and persuasion, was the idea that people are sick of social and political issues... except for the ones they happen to agree with, such as ANZAC day.

Did you seriously stop by to tell me to stop participating in a conversation that stopped 50 minutes ago..? ย You're basically the cowardly kid that hangs around the back of the fight and yells out 'Yeah!' when it's all over.

ย

OK... I'm sorry wrecker, you're right, you win - you're just too sharp for me.

Any mods out there care to move this to the general forum?

This [censored] is the reason I don't wade into that cesspool anymore.

Exactly social issues belong on the General Board. Why the AFL in its capacity as the peak body of footyball operations weighs into it is beyond me. Whilst the AFL think it is a football issue surely it stays out of place on the football forum.

I agree that this thread has transitioned away from the original post (which, believe it or not, was about Max Gawn and any role he might have with the AFL) and that it's time it was either locked or moved to the General Thread.

If you hadn't noticed they are individuals taking a stance not an organisation. Completely different concepts.

In the case of Nicky Winmar's gesture, the AFL adopted that as part of their campaign against racism.ย  The same could be said for the other two Olympics related images. Yes they were individuals making a stance, but in all cases those images and the issues they represented were supported by the respective organisations... so not really such a different concept at all.

I believe it's the Melbourne football club who supports Reach asย  a club Community partner, not the AFL. The promotion of reading in schools has been a project of the MFC for a number of years, and I don't remember it being an AFL initiative ever.

The post I was responding to was saying: "Just wish the afl would stick ย to bloodyย footy.".ย  You are right that the MFC was supporting Reach and the reading program (I was wrong), but I am sure that 64" would have insisted that the same apply to individual clubs.ย

Well, this thread has been taken over by the 'what about me' mob, which is unfortunate.

So, I'll just reiterate - the reason the AFL is keen to actively support a variety of social inclusion causes is because until quite recently it was completely unsafe for several kinds of people to go to watch a game, let alone play.

If you feel that as a result of extensive past experience you and a community you identify with have a hard time feeling safe from any variety of choruses of insults, harassment, groping, spitting, and bashings at the football, on the way to or from games, or by wound up football supporters post-game when you are just minding your own business, I am quite sure the AFL would be very keen to hear from you and to take action to help reduce the problem.

Let me know how your presentation goes.

Yes, I get all of that whenever I go to a game involving the Tigers but big Gil hasn't banned them yet.

I don't see a persons personal choice of whom they marry, is an issue our politicians should be involved in.

And as a result am offended when they assume to try toย controlย people in this way.

Further, when you say you don't see it (therefore it doesn't exist), I'll ask you, how many openly homosexual couples do we see at the Brownlow night celebration?

Answer: None. So in your rosey world view every things hunky dory, in mine its evidence that the 5-10% of players that are Gay, feelย humiliated and oppressed to the extent of hiding and being ashamedย of their sexual preference.

It is obvious you don't sit where I do.ย

I've no problem though saying where you sit is wrong, cruel and offensive.

If you want to understand the issues at a deeper level, go watch "I am not your [censored]" at ACMI. It's a searing exploration of the mindset of those who feel its ok to oppress others, and make them wrong for it.

Next the Afl will be telling us what political party we should vote for.The game we luv and got brought on has become politicised from the top.If people want to vote either way up to them.A big fuckoff to Afl management.

We are on the same page now. The individual took a stance and their organisation supported them. Exactly how it should be.

No... the organisation first supported them and then ran with the cause so that ALL players could play without fear of racial vilification.ย  Winmar became the AFL's pin-up boy for their (what you righties might call) "political cause"... and rightly so.

Wow, I am just picturing how berserk you'd go if the AFL turned around and said the government should prevent you from getting married. Because, y'know, that's the other side, isn't it? One side saying 'government shouldn't prevent people living their lives' and the other side saying 'government should judge and interfere whenever they like'.

Surely it's the ultimate nanny-state, to have the nanny saying you have to get their approval to marry.

Hey Biffenย you'reย not wrong that some things have changed. But you probably need to actually see the movie before attributing labels like "victemhood", to it.

It's central premise is almost precisely the opposite of your projection.ย

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
