If GWS lose Shiel this year and Kelly next that will be game over for them being a premiership threat in my opinion.  they dont bring much talent in aside from draft picks.  who wants to play in front of 8K.

Bring it on.   Kelly will rival Oliver in 2 years for the best player in the comp.

It's a shame that North's salary cap will be busting at the seems after they pay massive overs for Gaff/Polac/Hall this season

They've apparently got a lot more room than you'd think. They've had a "war chest" for years now, but haven't managed to secure a big name. Don't be surprised to see them finally land a couple of big targets in the coming years.

Regardless if they have had a war chest, there is still a salary cap and only a small amount can be rolled over.

I hope we make a big play for Kelly this year.

Just passing on what I've heard, but they're very confident that they can manage it. If Richmond can find room for Lynch in a team that has Dusty, Rance, Riewoldt, Prestia and Cotchin, I'm sure North can add Kelly and Gaff to a team that has Marley Williams and Majak Daw.

Even though i don't rate north players because i hate all of them your still picking out two spuds and forgetting Brown, Higgins, Ziebell etc.

Richmond players are taking unders. Riewoldt, Cotchin and Rance took a pay cut to keep Dusty and make room for Lynch. Ain't nobody at North taking a pay cut to secure anyone when all the news out there is that they have room to spare.

The Williams/Daw comment was obviously (or apparently not), a bit of a joke. I'm aware that North have some very good players, but I don't think that they're in a position that they can't afford to add a couple more big names.

I don't have any knowledge of North's current cap situation or whether they've got players who are signed for unders, but I'm sure that there are ways that they could make it work if they were able to get both Kelly and Gaff to commit.

Like you've said, players at Richmond have taken cuts to allow them to sign Lynch and Dusty. Who's to say that Ziebell, Brown & Co. wouldn't sign for unders if North had already reached some sort of agreement in principle with Polec/Kelly/Gaff/whichever other names they're trying to lure over?  They also could have front-loaded the contracts of some of their current big names to allow them to sign FAs in the coming few seasons.

Anyway, this post is all just speculation. What isn't speculation is that North is in to Kelly, and they're confident of getting him at the end of next season. I don't know how they plan to do it and I don't know what they're offering up, but my source is reliable.

Wouldn't it be delicious if we traded for Kelly this year and beat Norf to their intended punch next year!

My brother is a north supporter. I don't think I'd ever stop giving him crap if this happened. Doubt it though.

Already giving him heaps about Preuss, who he rates and doesn't want to lose.

If North get Gaff and Polec, they won't be getting Kelly, so it's delicious already!

Is Kelly a FA next year (excuse my ignorance)? If so they'd be better trading high for him now rather than getting 1 pick as FA compo next year

No, he's not. With GWS clearing the decks I'd say he might sign another 2 year deal which would take him to free agency (end of 2021) and then assess his options.

If Josh Kelly comes to the Dees, I will throw on a barrel, pig on the spit and a bonfire. Bring it on.

Happy to pop picks 5&6 under the giants nose and see how confident they are kelly won’t leave next year.

I think he will leave next year and we would be a chance to get him if we put a good offer to him.

I'm bookmarking this. You are referring to the food pig?

Makes the Tyson and Pick 9 ( Salem ) deal for Kelly's pick 2 look pretty sick now, in hindsight. Tyson will probably be gone this trade period.

Yeah it does a bit but I do kind of see the logic, though I suspect if we drafted kelly we might have been playing this weekend. As good as Salem has been.

I do wonder if the blues could be tempted into a trade say pick 5 and Tyson for pick 1 or some sort of variation of that to help us get Walsh in the door. The kid is fantastic! Would definitely soften the blow of losing Jesse if we could do that

Blues will not trade Pick 1.

They will get Mitch McG,  by trading their 2 pre draft state league picks to the Crows,  who would use them on Grigg and McAdam.

AFL therefore has given Mitch to the Blues for free, to help them.

Good analysis Red.

No chance, Tyson has very little value.

I keep hearing those 2 pre draft state league pick aren't tradeable? Wasn't Grigg on the Crows list previously?

Carlton/GCS must pick 'mature age' players (no picks involved).  The player is then tradeable for a pick or player.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
