I'm not suggesting they're telling deliberate lies, I'm just saying that any perceived sensation of respiratory obstruction from a professionally fitted mouth guard is purely psychological.

there is a substantial number of the population who are predominantly mouth-breathers (for various reasons) so any extra obstruction of the mouth way can translate to increased breathing difficulties

i'm not suggesting they shouldn't were mouthguards (and afl players would definitely have professionally fitted ones) just that you shouldn't dismiss the possibilities that some may incur a degree of breathing issues. it's also not practical that all kids (or adults) playing footy could afford a personally tailored and fitted professional mouthguard.   that variety are quite expensive.

Hated wearing one. And id agree that it can dramatically alter the ability for some to be coherent. Have no idea what i must have sounded like.

Often at training i didn't wear one....much preferred i must admit.

For some time now I've been intrigued by the practice of players removing their mouthguard when having a set shot at goal.

I'm of the view that if you can run, kick, mark, handball, tackle & be tackled, contest balls in the air and on the ground, hit and and be hit all with a mouthguard in place. taking a set shot with the same piece of equipment in place should be a piece of...........cake by comparison.

So players past & present of any level, did you remove your gumshield for set shots ? If so, why so ?

Yeah, I used to do it all the time, Took the mouthguard out, placed it inside right sock, just where garter roll was! lined them up and Whammo!!!  another Fence Special "Goal of the week"

Worked nearly every time!;)

OK - thanks but what I'm interested in is why you did it.
Was it a breathing thing ? Did it help your concentration lining up for goal ? Or was it because you'd seen others do it ?

Seriously, mouthguard advancememts were just starting to take of, in the late 70ts 80ts and 90 ts I hated wearing one , but after years of gobbing of cheap shots toward opposition, they all wanted to give me a face full of fives! So started wearin one and after each effort you would be puffing and huufin, snortin and really struugling to breath. As Result if I had a ping on goal, Mouthguard was taken out placed in rim of sock and Whammo another Fence "Magic" Goal!

Gee what great memories!

Hope that clarrifies my take on Mouthguards!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
