Had the day off and looked up the AFL tables.

Jack Watts 149 Games 141 Goals 

Nathan Jones 235 Games 115 Goals

Jesse Hogan 48 Games 98 Goals

Jeff Garlett 55 Games 103 Goals

Dean Kent 56 Games 55 Goals

Christian Pertracca 34 Games 35 Goals (20 this season from 14 games)

James Harmes 36 Games 24 Goals

 

Jeremy Howe 100 Games 80 Goals

Lynden Dunn 165 Games 97 Goals

Liam Jurrah 36 Games 81 Goals*

Brad Green Last 53 Games 111 Goals 2010-2012 (254 Games 350 Goals)

 

Our last player to Kick 100 Career Goals was Nathan Jones (last year) and before him Jack Watts. Jesse Hogan now only needs 6 more to hit the "mythical career ton" & Garlett (At Melbourne) needs another 12.

The last to get close was Liam Jurrah with 81 (we all know why that never happened) and Dean Kent with 52 from 54.

Excluding Jones who is a midfielder and when you think that almost half of Watts goals have come in the last two years (after being drafted in 2008) You have to go back to Brad Green who finished his career with 350 goals, kicked 111 in his last 53 games.

While we are improving and our midfield develops what we lack is genuine finishers. I think Melbourne need to go after the best proven forwards & forward mids we can trade/find/draft in the off season.

Off the top of my head.

Luke Bruest comes to mind?

Prioritise defence and then look at a KPF.

Interesting figures though, really shows how bad we have been.

Edit: Lynden Dunn also came close with 97 goals in 165 games.

I think our defence is close to being set. They are clearing banking on Oscar McDonald developing into our 3rd Keyback and it's also interesting to see Liam Hullet going to the Defence for Casey.

But we need Goal Kickers! Pertracca will be a gem and I'm hoping harmes becomes a 30-40 goal a year player like Parker and obviously Kent has the potential to do the same..

But we need another Key Forward/Mid Fwd option!

Keep them coming if you can find players I. The last 5-10 years who have come close to 100. Also who Should we be looking at?

Jayden Hunt is the least of our problems!!

I don't think our biggest issue is our main goal kickers at all, so far Garlett, Watts, Tracc and Hogan have hit the board regularly. The issue we have is the midfield hasn't been getting on the score board, so far Jones has 4, Lewis and Salem 3, Stretch and Viney 2, with Tyson and Vince only 1. Oliver is yet to hit the score board (goals). We need more score board pressure from the mids as well as the main goal kickers, that will also potentially help with the flood some teams have used pretty successfully against us this year as well.

Valid points.. But midfielders kicking goals is a must/bonus.. we need more Fwd/Mids like a Dalhaus or Parker or Grey

Trac will get there sooner than most. 

When your forward line has an average games (or games-at-club) tally of about 25, it would actually be pretty impressive if one of them had 100 goals to their name!

But it does put into perspective some of our problems with converting inside-50s into good scoring opportunities. That extra edge of experience, confidence and game sense can make all the difference close to goal, where you just need a couple of things in a row to go right and where every step of advantage is a big deal.

A good veteran key position player, at either end of the ground, is very hard to replace. Just ask the queue of players the Demons tried to turn into a successor for Neitz.

I want more success now, I feel like we are underperforming right now, but any time I look at the list my mind goes to what should be a 6-8 year period where we don't have to think too hard about how we will replace this or that essential role, and can watch as maturity grows, especially in the habitually slow-burning key position roles.

 

A stat from a few weeks back, but:

Number of times an individual player has kicked 4 or more goals in an AFL game since 2015: 401

Number of times an individual MFC player has kicked 4 or more goals in a game since 2015: 10

5 or more goals? I can recall maybe twice.

I think Kent kicked 5 last year against Hobart didn't he?

Hogan has 94 in 45 games. This year, when he's been ordinary and distracted, he's kicked 3, 0, 3 and 3. I think we still underestimate what a weapon he is.

I think we're missing a good chunk of players from the 2006-2011 era that were expected to be among the club centurions by now.

For example, the likes of Bate, Petterd and maybe even Cook are three players that come to mind that just might have featured in the 100+ goal category club if Neeld hadn't been appointed coach. 

Watts would average more but has been a utility player.

Blease is the  last guy I recall getting a bag of 6  or 7.

Didn't Hogan kick 7 goals in a loss to St Kilda last year?

He is so, so very good. You can see the panic in the defenders eyes when the ball is coming in towards Hogan. You can almost guarantee he'll take the mark if he gets even two or three metres of space. 

I understand the desire for a big KPF a la Neiter to kick a bag every week, but I'm less fussed at the monent given our average scores for the year - we're doing pretty well offensively (120, 86, 97, 75, 112, 91). Average 83 points a game, 3 of which without Hoges who is scoring ~ 3 per game. Not far off...
