Family Day - Luna Park 19/2/17

I asked Kent how the back was tracking. He said he was still about a month away. I asked if he thought he'd be available for round 1. He said he was hopeful but he didn't sound convinced at all

Pity about the rain.

Despite the rain at the end I put it down as a success. Lots of people buying memberships, club apparel etc and the players (men and women) were there for photo opps, autographs. The kids were enjoying themselves.

Briefly spoke with Michael Hibberd - he's hopeful of playing in next week's JLT game.

Always enjoy attending this day, a great chance to rub shoulders with all the players who are very approachable and appear to enjoy themselves (Tommy Mac look bored out of his brain but I got a smile out of him). Congratulated JKH on a solid game and discussed his hopes of not just competing for the small forward position but hopes to play up off the wing too.

Had some banter with J Lewis asking when he is going to update his Twitter photo of him accepting a medal for the Hawks, to which Jonesey got a laugh out of. Lewy said he doesn't use it and can't even remember what pic he has on it.

Great to chat to some of the girls too, Daisy Pearce is every bit as popular with the kids as a lot of the senior blokes.

Got some great pics with our kids with many of the players, thanks to the MFC for the opportunity for our kids to meet their heroes.

Really well run by the club -  and the players are great with the kids.  Got to say Jack Watts was a stand out as usual -  a real natural with kids and goes above and beyond with supporters.

Did anyone see Hoges?  I didn't and was concerned as he seemed to have a leg injury late in the game against Dogs.

A great day for the kids as always. I thought it was easier to navigate than usual - perhaps having the women there as well helped to lessen the crowds around the men.

The only missing player (men) was Wagner - everyone else was there, although some were definitely playing hard to get. We were on the dodgem cars at the same time as Frost and Salem.

Tyson and Neal-Bullen were two players who were really good with my six year old, who I perhaps hadn't seen as being so confident in the past. Watts and Trengove are always friendly and we didn't make it upstairs for the main stars.

Was great to have the girls out in force as well. Highlight of my daughters day was to meet daisy and the team!

I'll be honest, I think Luna Park has done its dash. Time for a new site for the family day. the 9.00am start is too early on a sunday and the fact is all the rides are jammed with lines and you've got two hours to enjoy. I think we get a good turnout, but I reckon a 1pm -4pm scenario on a sunday would yield greater numbers.

As posted on another thread, I don't know why it isn't just held in Yarra Park car park outside the MCG. This seems the most logical idea. We need to push this with the MCG. Just like the AFL uses the area on Grand Final day. You can set up activities for kids, rides etc. Plus, the Demon Shop is adjacent and it would be a great opportunity to sell a range of merchandise. I would actually love to see family day held out in the park and along the concourse at the MCG. I know the club likes Luna Park for the rides. Let's be honest though, I reckon most parents gave up on the rides due to the massive lines.

Not sure I agree leoncelli.

The kids all love luna park family day, even more than a game. Would be a lot of disappointed young fans were Luna park family day to be scrapped. Plus it is always good to get an icecream / coffee in acland st afterwards.

At 9am there was nothing open on Acland street. I just think the time is all wrong. Yes, kids might love it, but Family day should be very everyone. I just think you'd get a lot more people along and a lot more buying memberships if you made it for all and got a decent time slot.

9am on a sunday is way too early for me, but i don't have kids

Maybe we need a 2nd "Family Day" for the more mature members of the Melbourne Family at a more appropriate venue....

Exactly once the kids have happily gone home, about 1pm would be great

Make for a very interesting afternoon.

Lots of $$$ changing hands could well benefit The Club

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

  • PREGAME: Gold Coast

The Demons have the Bye next week but then are on the road once again when they come up against the Gold Coast Suns on the Gold Coast in what could be a last ditch effort to salvage their season. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
