A mate of mine is good friends with the player manager of Jordan Lewis...

Discussion's between Clarkson & Lewis have already taken place in regards to where his mind's at & what his playing intentions are for 2017 & beyond.

If Lewis does end up leaving the Hawks, the Melbourne FC is where he wants to be.

We could use him for 2 yrs, on a 1+1 ?

Are we not in a similar position to Collingwood with the calls for "More experienced players" a month ago? Granted they've pressed ahead on maximum speed with the experienced player offer. But surely they and us both agree that to make the finals next year will have untold experiential benefits that far exceed the negatives of short-term salary cap offers for 2-3 years maximum aged players.

Personally I think Bucks is making the right move in trading in Wells & Mayne in order to push their club temporarily over the 8/10 line, get their players some finals experience and hope that snowballs into some success further down the line. I would at least like to see one experienced player join the Dees.

I would rather the type of experience we will get with Hibbard thanks...

Wells, lucky to get on the park & Mayne a foot soldier at best.

Wait, did someone say Jordan Lewis might be going to Melbourne?! My mind can't even comprehend that.

I recall him losing his [censored] in the game against us at the G, he lost his composure when we were running away with it. Wouldn't surprise me if he saw something in our game style that inspired him to think that he could have a leadership impact and get a bit of $$$ playing for us in leading us into a some finals campaigns. Maybe that's how the rumour started... I don't recall any other player getting as [censored] off as him in that encounter.

Day one summary.

Everyone wants to go to hawthorn or cats. If no interest from those two they want to go to the pies.

Contracts mean nothing and being a FA has no relevance.

Comp is becoming a joke

Stinks - FA got people thinking about moving to other clubs .... and now trading has legs there's no stopping it !!

It stands to reason that the wealthy clubs with the best facilities are the destination clubs.

The  biggest long term problem is that it'll start breaking down club loyalties.

What is the little Richmond supporter with #3 on his back going to think when B Deledio kicks a goal for Geelong against Richmond?

I think we'd hope to take 19-20 into this years draft and trade 2nd Round next year to Bombers for Hibberd.

It's a gamble for both sides.  If we go very well next year it's a pick 30+.  If we have a few injuries to critical players it's probably an upgrade for the Bombers on pick 28 this year.  Hibberd is not worth a top 20 pick.

Or pick 19-20 (2016), + our 2017 1st Rnd Pick, for Fyfe?  I'm waiting for a curve ball to arrive?

Finally someone is speaking sense. Wells and Mayne are not costing Collingwood any draft picks, whereas we're coughing up for Melksham last year and Hibberd this year. So if Wells and Mayne can fit into their salary cap short term, what they're getting paid is irrelevant.

Since the Bailey era, Demonlanders have been brainwashed into believing that a total rebuild is the only way to go. People like ProDee boasts about how young our list is. In the modern era of free agency and contracts being broken at will, the idea of topping up will become more prevalent. And if you can top up via free agency as the Pies have, it's a massive bonus. It's all about winning now and not potential.

Wells is a jet, and just the type we need. Mayne wouldn't suit us, but the Pies need more forward pressure, so he addresses a need for them.

Wells is 31 and injury prone and they've given him a three year big $$ contract.

Mayne is average at best and they've offered him a 4 year big $$ contract.

They're desperate to try and improve their win/loss ratio next year to save the coaches hide, it's a horrible long term decision from them.

we're miles ahead of the Pies and our list is far younger so there is more scope for growth and development.

Hibberd suits our needs far more than either Mayne or Wells do, so we've gone for the guy we need, targeted recruiting with a plan.

what's the Pies plan? i can't for the life of me see what they're trying to do.

neither Mayne or Wells will be in the Pies next premiership side, but there is a chance Hibberd and or Melksham ould be for us.

If a list is young and crap there's no point "boasting".  We put out the youngest team more often than not and won 3 on the trot, beat Collingwood twice, beat Hawthorn, beat Port over there, beat GWS, and had only one ten goal loss.  For the youngest team in the league there was a bit to crow about.

But the youngest team in the competition won't win a flag, which is all I care about.  Hibberd will be a terrific addition to our defence, while I'm less sure about Melksham.  Importantly, we have a group that can grow together.  If we could get a 26-28 year old gun I'm all for it.  Easier said than done.

With that said, I have little clue with what you're on about or if you're being critical of my stance on our young list.

What the hell, do the Hawkes or Cats even have a salary cap?

here's an idea, if you finish top 4 you cannot trade players in that year, and top 4 also can't sign free agents that year.

if those players want to move they can't just move to a contender and keep them up the top .

Don't believe a word about Carlton being blindsided by the Bryce Gibbs announcement that he wants to go back to SA. My mail from a month ago from a Blues supporter with connections to the club was that they were trying to set up a trade to get at least an extra top ten draft pick. Looks like that plan might work out.

it'd be very unfair / impossible for them to be disallowed to trade, but you could definitely limit free agency - pretty sure that's the way that the nfl handles it.

biggest thing is that players shouldn't be able to veto trades. if a club sais 'mate, yr off to gc17' then pack yr bags - yr contract is being honoured, but at the suns not here.

fwiw, i agree that acquiring mayne and wells makes 'sense' for the pies for them to re-balance their list - pendles is now their oldest and most experienced player - but the length of the deal for wells is a big surprise. mayne gives them exactly what they lack currently; a hard-working, hard-tackling and defensively-minded forward who will bust a gut to make an impact, and is only 27.

wells also gives them what they need - speed and skill - but he'll be 32 at the start of the next season.

i presume like sydney they're presuming that the new cba will see the salary size rendered redundant because the salary cap will increase exponentially.

What's Gibbs worth do you think WJ?

lot of talk in the Media that it'll be pick 13 which seems like unders to me, i would have thought Gibbs was worth more than that.

Much the same with Deledio, who is on $800K.  Richmond want to free up cap-space and see Deledio, who plays as a 30 year old next year, as expendable in their list revamp.

I would think that after last year's Menzel trade, Adelaide would be wary of Carlton's 'gifts'!!

If Carlton are trying to 'offload' Gibbs they can't be too greedy as to what they get back.  Pick 13 and a player maybe.  Adelaide's pick 13 will enable them to deal for the GWS player(s) they want and have a good round 1 pick.  eg give GWS pick 5 for pick 7 and Marchbank +/- other bits and pieces.

As an aside, if the GWS and GCS pick upgrades get done they could hold picks 2 to 8 and the cynical me would think there would be some wink-wink, nudge-nudge, chats as to which players are passed over.  So GWS/GCS don't use their early picks for Academy players, Carlton, Freo and Brisbane get their preferred player etc etc.  And the AFL will turn a blind eye to it all.

That makes sense, i wonder if something like pick 13 and Jarryd Lyons would get the deal done?

Gibbs is about to turn 28, has won one BnF and averages 5.5 Brownlow votes a season. If they get pick 13 for him they've done well.

Interesting that the Cats are moving on their 30+ year old champs & looking to trade another in.

Desperate times, will Danger be another Bucks & unfulfilled in the premiership stakes?

I reckon Gibbs & Pick 56 for Lyons & Pick 13 would be on about the money.

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
