Stick to the plan I say, does Motlop fit the plan? He has the skills for sure but will we get the consistent competitive return given the price needed to land him. That's the risk.

On the other hand imagine him developing a synergy with our forward line and it is easy to imagine it being a lethal combination.

Motlop, Petracca, Garlett, Watts, Hogan, Wiedeman in forward line with several able to rotate through the midfield feels like an improvement.

We scorer a lot out the back so another speed forward would cause oppositions issues...

The problem lies with the speed of the ball going the other way. None of those forwards would be considered good defensively.

I was thinking that too. Watts has improved a lot in that area and Petracca's ok, Jeff on his day is great... Weed not sure.

Which leaves Hoges and Motlop...

I think it's a bad generalisation to suggest a senior Indigenous player can turn around others. No doubt it could help but every player is still different and I don't think just because of their race you can group them together.

Garlett needed a fresh start and had a great 2015 but he was shocking this year. 

Motlop was certainly overweight in preseason but his first 6 weeks or so of this year were fantastic. His decision making and effort just seemed to spiral off as the season went on. 

Whilst Motlop at his best would bring a lot of speed and skill to our team I don't think he's a priority. He isn't a hard running wingman nor is he a forward pressure player. He's kind of an inbetween forward/midfielder and I like the options we have there with rotating mids like the Dogs do.

Maybe they don't feel quite at home there. Or maybe it just reflects the "fringe" quality of these players.

He is very talented. Also Soft, mentally weak and has no consistency. 

If Geelong can't get him to play he is done.

Stokes was done, no idea why Essendon picked him up. Varcoe needed a fresh start. Christensen had to move to QLD for personal reasons. I doubt Geel have any issues with Indigenous players.

Hey DeeSpencer, I just wanted to mention that it's not a matter of arbitrarily grouping people together just because of their race, but acknowledging that many indigenous boys talk about a special brotherhood, bond or comraderie they share together at each club.  We have a young leader in Neville Jetta who was nominated for the Jim Stynes medal for community leadership who has signed long term and is purported to have a strong work ethic and is defensively disciplined who would be an ideal mentor for Motlop and I mentioned Geelong because it seems Motlop is the most senior indigenous player at their club and seems a little afloat. Everyone is an individual of course but there are generalisations that have an element of truth. I could be making a wrong assumption, but I just feel these "Geelong have a great environment, so he wouldnt last at our club" comments are a bit simplistic and underestimate the club culture we're growing and can offer that perhaps Geelong can't. It would be a bad generalisation to just assume it is or it isn't a factor. It's just a potentiality.

He kicked the same amount of goals as Watts this year (38) yet you consider that "not playing" ?

Imagine if he didn't turn up fat in the preseason. So there is the issue of discipline.  But he's a high quality talent.

If the club is interested I'm interested, because his talent is unquestionable.  

 

People dont want a 25 year old that averaged 20 possessions and kicked 38 goals in a supposed down year?  Dear god.

Would welcome him to the MFC with open arms, he is better than Garlett.

I would take Motlop any day of the week.

Pretty simple equation. If he is best 22 then we must look at him or anyone else for that matter. Yes he may have a few shockers but a change might be what he needs.

We're not going to get him for a 2nd rounder.  Geelong will want a 1st (they don't have one this year) and I think his value is somewhere in the teens.

The deal would need to be our 2017 1st for Motlop and Geelong's 2nd (34).  That values him at about pick 16 (assuming we finish in a similar position) which is about right I think.

There are many ways to get the same basic result e.g.  2017 1st to GWS for 16 + 33, 16 to Geelong for Motlop - that probably appeals to Geelong because they get a 1st this year (they may want to trade this for Deledio, Richmond on trade for Prestia) and Geelong get to keep their 2nd.

BTW, I think Hibberd for 26 is a pretty good deal.

Every draft pick and trade has a risk attached. And every year we see clubs unearth gems and at the same time, have players who don't end up working out.

There are numerous stories of players who struggle with discipline who seemingly are able to turn it around. Michael Walters being one. Even Gary Ablett was told he didn't work or train hard enough and that if he did, he could become anything.

Motllop is exactly what Geelong need, they rely on 2 A graders in their midfield so you have to ask why would they be interested in letting him go? He has averaged 16 possessions in 8 finals so clearly goes missing when the heat is on.  Some might get seduced by his obvious talent but I'd prefer to make competiveness and heart a non-negoitable for trading players in. He looked like he wasn't even trying last week.
