It's fair to say McDonald couldn't have kept it in when collecting the ball just on the boundary line, but he was also the player that deliberately flicked the ball into that position to begin with.

I don't understand why this wouldn't be obvious?

In fairness, they pay great deference to the Number One rule of the AFL.

The problem that these guys sit in their job and wonder what they will be remembered for.  Apparently the last thing they want to be remembered for is that they kept the game running nicely as before.  Not sexy enough.

must be trying for stand-up comedian of the year. Here's an idea - why not have 18 teams in the finals and do away with the home (and not so home) and away season.

Tired players would open the game up, leading to more scoring, leading to more interchanges.

A punch to spoil that travels 20m to go out of bounds would be pegged as deliberate, and that is harder to direct than the flick executed by McDonald, sending the ball perpendicular to where he was facing. 

Deliberated act, and paid as such.

The rule doesn't apply to a spoil in a marking contest.

The intent of the rule is probably positive. But it also adds another interpretation that umpires have to make.

And you know they will stuff it up as often as not.

As for the last touch rule, we are already seeing players trailing the ball to the boundary line instead of trying to take possession.

Just as an aside (to save you the googling)  - in 1991 & 92, Allen Jackovich's kick-to-handball stats were 292/19.

He must have been sitting behind me st the footy last Sunday. I was whinging to my Carlton supporting mate that it is impossible to explain the rules to a foreigner with all the umpire interpretation nuances to most of the rules.

it leaves the game open to umpires being targeted to take a bribe to throw a game result. The only reason we don't see more from this is we naively put lopsided free kick counts down to home crowd interference; and we also see the AFL as generally too incompetent.

we need as many black and white rules as possible (eg out on the full, free kick)
