6 - Gawn - probably eclipsed his Geelong game and certainly on a much tougher opponent. Will be interesting to see who the umps give the three to.

5 - Viney - Together with Lamumba sparked the second-term comeback. And how good was his goal. Hands up all the DL's who have questioned his kicking ability.

4 - Vince - Prolific and whilst he caused a turnover by slamming ball onto boot a few times, his physical presence was there all day.

3 - Hogan - Just in case a few of us thought he'd fallen behind Daniher as the best young forward last week, he showed us why everyone rates him. Has a nice little combo with Watts going.

2 - Oliver - Tired a bit in the last term but how tough is this guy. Loved how he gave it to them after one of his goals. How can he gets his hands free so often.

1 -  Lumumba - This could have gone to Salem who was more efficient, but Harry kept taking the game on. After a couple of early howlers, his second term was the spark we needed.

Gawn's game was massive but I am surprised how many have given him BOG when his direct opponent kicked 5 (regardless of how they came). Same goes for if Nth supporter gave Goldstein top marks when he was pants'ed in the taps to advantage. Surely your direct opponent (particularly when so obvious as a ruckman) having such great influence cancels out or at least reduces your votes?

Well after rigorous regression testing using the highest quality "In game" data available I was able to show a strong correlation between the rankings and ... a truckload of bulldust! 

Of course nothing as robust as that. Just a very simple weighted average of a select group of fairly unworthy publicly available stats.

Just what I felt were possibly the best of the worst public data. This Is the 3rd season now and I think I've managed to tweak it a little and shine a small light on who's going ok (comparatively) each game and In the aggregate for the season once there's enough sample data In there. Did a bit of reverse engineering (qualitatively through reviewing about 6 game replays from front to back as well as at the ground on a few of those games  also) to arrive at a similar result to what some considered their top 5 etc as well as my own view of who were in the best to ensure it was going some way towards achieving "like" outcomes each week.

But like all statistical analysis (not that i would call this true analysis...rubbish in rubbish out and an amateur putting it together lol) it has many holes. Two glaring ones are backmen getting a bit too much leg up at times, via effective disposals (some extra cheap ones dinking It around the back) and doesn't cater very well for ruckman as there's no "hitting to advantage" available. A good example of that is the weekend's game with Gawn coming in a very average 13th when most had him in their top few players.

It's also very tedious drawn out work putting the aggregate averages together after about 5 rounds via excel formulas. Have to make sure each player's references are on the money.

I only took it to Rnd 18 last year but it did match the Bluey to a point with Vince at 1 and 5 others in the top 10 Bluey rank (the other 5 weren't the same rank) and just missed Dunny at No.10. Had him ranked 11 up to Rnd 18.

Happy to supply the spreadsheet. You can then fiddle with the weightings/stat mix if you wanted to have a bit of fun (or extremely bored!!). Feel free to share what you're up to also if you wish as I'm interested to hear what others might be doing as well.

Yeah, nah.

Taking Goldstein's influence out of the equation for the moment, I simply felt Gawn's presence from the start of the 2nd quarter was huge in Melbourne coming back, effective taps to advantage were significant for mine, added the ability to push forward and kick 2 goals, have a hand in a few. Then there were the 18 or 19 disposals and 60+ hit outs against the All - Australian ruckman. 

That said I did toss up between him and Viney for the 6 votes. I love Jack's game, he was equally influential with Gawn and his work rate phenomenal. Their partnership for years to come will be so important. I just gave Gawn the nod as this influence I thought critical to the game. 

Re: Goldy - IMO he was really fortunate to get 2-3 goals. Independant umpire review system would have decided in a behind in first qtr IMO if it were at a ground with all angles available. Another decision Gawn was stitched up by umpire at a stoppage which directly gave Goldy a goal. Incorrect decision. I'd only credit Goldy 3 goals. 

All in all I thought it was a brilliant match-up, I've never been so enthused about a ruck contest before, not since probably watching the Madden brothers clash. Or Jeff White before the introduction of the circle.
