Don't know if it was a closed session, or MFC supporters didn't want to get wet, but hardly anyone viewing this morning at Gosch's paddock.

Rehab - Vince, Dawes, H

Main group - Frost trained.  Couldn't see Watts.  Petracca left before main drills.

Jogging/Walking - Max King

I only stayed an hour, but Goodwin took them for slow-mo full-ground, low-pressure stoppage work.  D50 stoppages, midfield stoppages, offensive boundary stoppages.  Interesting to notice that at every stoppage, the "fifth", the "launch" and the "stalker", amongst other roles and positions need to be identified.  At the end of it, the goal kicker had to pull the trigger under pressure.  Weed, Kent +/- Frost kicking truly.

(cmon Stu, it was a joke)

id be guessing  bt would think maybe the  5th is a numbers at ball player to lock down oppositions opportunites. Launch..is the get out player who'll 'start' the offence"  and stalker...a shutdown role ?

Like Beelzebub said, the 'launch', I suspect is the go-to man out of the congestion that is ideally a good user by foot....ala Salem.

In VAFA circles, the 'fifth', as I understand it, is usually referenced to high HFFs pushing up to a stoppage; but I can't be sure about this morning and the context.

Same in most football circles, the 5th is someone who will push into the contest and often play as an extra mid.

We often used a winger last year and usually they would sweep the contest, but it was a role that crossy and Jack Watts often played which could coincide with them being third man up often ...

Like last year when the 'spitter' term got outed, I'm sure there are lots of newfangled 'roles' or set piece plays that coaches are always trying to invent.

No doubt these two roles could be called something else at another club.

Thanks for the report TGR!

Just my experience, but the fifth is the half forward (usually flanker) who pushes up at a stoppage and shuts down the oppositions back door get out or outside player.

Yeah, seems pretty straight forward.

"Launch" as the player who breaks free of congestion to make the attacking move.

The "5th" would be direction as to where a player is to set up if you're a wingman or HFF entering the contest to create an extra number.

The "stalker" I imagine would be the same sweeper type role at the back of a contest, not directly part of the contest, but a failsafe hanging back in case the opposition break out from the initial congestion - to stop an opposition "launch."

Well done WJ.  About time - could do for many other threads as well.  It would make this whole board far more enjoyable.

That's correct - not aimed at the OP but at an unnecessary comment in the next post.

Discussion on training and players is always welcome.

Half forward flankers, wings - you guys are dreaming.  The game has now shrunk to ruckmen, key forward & defender, small forward & defender and 9 or 10 onballers.

We are 22 days away from our first NAB game against Port.  Any news on when we will play an intra-club game or two?

It would be nice if the rehab group was a little smaller, but hopefully it is because they club is now ultra-conservative with injuries.

It is going to be very interesting to see how the Round 1 team takes shape over the next 7 weeks.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
