Great.

So you're taking a 2 month sabbatical too ?

If they really wanted to punish you, they'd make you take a two month sabbatical from posting climate change skeptic graphs and article snippets.

You're welcome to refute any/all of them rather than snipe.

Settle down, Tiptoes. It's a joke.

You might as well change your avatar and sig now. The only thing preventing Watts from playing 11 games this season will be injury.

Watts will be in round 1. Mark it down.
Whether he will be in the team all year is a different proposition altogether.

If you think Weideman will take his place in the squad early on in the piece, you clearly haven't been paying attention to the way Roos does things.
In certain cases with blokes like Hogan and Brayshaw, he is willing to pull the trigger and put them in the firing line.
In most cases, (see Billy Stretch, Christian Salem, Jay Kennedy Harris), he keeps the kids wrapped in cotton wool and he phases them in progressively.
While Jack is frustrating, he has senior AFL experience (albeit his 'experience' has stunted his growth as a player). Roos prefers known quantities compared to the skinny kids we played before his arrival.
For that reason, Watts stays in the starting 22 until someone from Casey kicks the door down and demands his spot.

Nah, 2016 is all about "competitors" and Watts is one of the least competitive footballers I've ever seen.

If one looks at most of our recent draftees there's a distinctive hard edge, whether it be ANB, Oliver, Petracca, Brayshaw, Viney, Salem, Tyson (trade), and vandenBerg.

The club made a statement by dropping him in the last game and the message from Roos has been clear ever since. He mentioned competitors in his B&F speech and just 3 days ago said, “There are some non-negotiables now for kids coming in. You give yourself a better chance if you are a competitor,’’.

The messages are clear for those that want to read them. Watts is toast.

In all seriousness if you believe the club also believe that why do you think they didn't trade him? His value is not going to increase playing him the twos and in any case i think he is a restricted free agent so they will get diddley next year if they trade him

The only reason JW is still on our list is because nobody was interested in a trade deal.

So 2016 will be Jack's last season or his best

Over to you Jack....

That's a complete nonsense. if they didn't rate him at all they would have cut their losses and taken waht they could have got, which would have been minimum a second rounder

How do you know this, the club made no statements about trading of Jack Watts and unless you are on the inside there is no evidence of no clubs being interested.

What I have heard, was more that clubs were interested but thought he was worth something similar to Toumpas but Melbourne wouldn't not trade for anything less than a late first rounder, early second rounder.

Jack watts will play round 1 and in my opinion has every chance to play 20 games.

He's still on our list because he has great skills and huge potential. He's running out of time to prove himself, but it should be hardly a shock that he's still in red and blue.

Externally, that was the offers received.

Regardless of whether he is rated externally or not, I personally am of the opinion he is in the best 22 and obviously from there it's form dependent as we have more depth.

Huge potential means sod all if one never produces it....the "it will happen next year" attitude is part of the curse

That whole attitude must cease if we are ever to be a serious flag contender..

When do you give up on potential? Can't do it too early or it will bite you in the arse very quickly. You need to have faith in players until you're highly confident that they won't get better.

That moment is getting mighty close for Jack. He has had so many chances to prove himself. Pretty much injury free and given many gifted games.

I like Jack but the sand in the hour glass is almost done....

The thing is that he's still better than many on our list. The only way that he won't be on our list in 2017 will be if he's traded or signs elsewhere. People are talking about this being his last chance to be an AFL player. I think that he's better than a lot of other players running around at the moment.

It would be interesting to visit a parallel universe where Jack Watts was pick #67 and to see how people perceive him.

In his 3rd year of a coaching executive that actually have a clue.

Let him play in the FP all year.

Yes, I'm shouting.

JR, when did your views on Watts change and what caused that to happen? I remember us having a debate on his value to the team a few years ago and you were firmly on the other side of the argument then.

Happy to have another person join in the defence of the perrennial whipping boy.

Rubbish and hyperbole.

My favourite thing about Watts is you can find out the people who have little understanding about footy and choose to make definitive statements about him and come out at this time every year saying "it's his last chance" blah blah.

To be fair Stuie, it is the last year of his existing three year deal. This is another reason why he will at least get a run at the start of the year (extending possibly to mid point). The truth is as well that there isn't anyone who can just walk into his position and become an automatic selection. Not that I'm saying Watts would be a walk up starting 22 in any other team but he gets in ours because of where we are coming from.

Jack, I would suggest, will get a chance to prove he has changed his ways.

I saw his value GTG as a finisher.

I saw him run to the best spots and present all the time.

With a better list, he will be very damaging for us.

I made my peace.

I believe there was zero interest from other clubs, so he'll get the opportunity to present his case in the final year of his contract.

I'm not sure where you live, but on radio I heard Mahoney asked about Watts on numerous occasions and the answer was always the same, "no other club has enquired about Jack".

It's pretty obvious where Watts stands in the broader football community.

I'm genuinely astounded after all these years that there are still supporters that think he presents value to a football team. We've been crud for years and Watts' presence hasn't made an ounce of difference. And don't give me this crap that he'd be good in a better team like so many kid themselves. He doesn't make the grade in a good team. He'd be shown up even more.

Okay.

Time to let it go.

One group will have bragging rights as the 2016 footy season unfolds....

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
