James Harmes promoted

Yewwwww!! If he can play consistently like he did in that last GWS game then he can be a seriously damaging 3rd tall type for us, the guy can take a grab

Where does that leave us in terms of spots in our senior list?

Pretty tough on James making him wait 7 weeks to know whether he has a spot on the list for next year, but I'm sure the club has its reasons.

Hopefully he can continue his good form from round 23 - it's been a while since one of our rookie elevations really had a decent career, most lately have been in the Evans / Nicholson / Clisby mould of doing nothing once they reach the senior list.

Does no announcement re Vandenberg mean that he will start 2016 on the rookie list? Perhaps not a bad idea, as they can leave a spot open on the senior list and promote the best performing rookie prior to round 1.

Plenty of promise in the young fella and I'm very much looking forward to seeing him play more next year.

Looks like Michie is the only out of contract.. surely Terlich gets paid out?

Hunt re-signed too. Does that mean Michie is the only one OOC? Or will Terlich be paid out and delisted.

I think this is the way it's headed, especially with Hunt's extension (all the right moves in my opinion).

Where does that leave us in terms of spots in our senior list?

3 available, and two rookie spots.

2 rookie spots and 3 senior spots currently available.

Would think 4 draftees would be the max for us given our picks, so Michie is the likely candidate to make way given his contract status IMO.

Fairly AvB had been promoted previously.

Well deserved. So this leaves only Hunt and possibly Michie as OOC?

Hunt has also signed on for one year

The club committed to promoting vdB permanently during the year. Signed a contract and all.

How do you know they didn't tell Harmes earlier?

Vandenberg is on the primary list already.

A one year contract is strange.

I agree. The timing and length of the contract indicates that the club may not rate him as highly as some of us do. Hopefully he can continue to improve in 2016 and earn an extension, as I really like him.

Or he wanted more money than we offered and signed a 1 year contract with plans of improving his value next year.

Perhaps, but the timing seems strange. The list lodgement is on Friday and this decision seems to have been left until the completion of the trade period. I think it's most likely that the club wanted to see how the trade period played out and how many spots we had on the list before offering Harmes a new contract. Complete speculation, though.

and michie ooc

Michie to Rookie list?

I was pretty sure he already had been offered a spot on the rookie list, but with the happenings in the trade period i think they would much rather pick up two rookies so thought to promote him.

still think we will try to take 4 live picks into the draft, so possibility of Michie or Terlich copping the schnip

Michie to Rookie list?

Perhaps, but I just get the feeling it will be senior list or nothing for Michie.

I think his only chance is the club deciding to pay out Terlich's contract, but I think the club will honour his contract.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
